Game devs giveing up control and quality control of their AAA games doesnt sound like something that will happen anytime soon. AI for smaller indie games or fully procedurally generated games seems much more likely. Imagen Rockstar trying to let AI make the dialogue or maps to their games, for the amount of important detail and work they put in that would be madness.
@yumri4
@yumri4 2 месяца назад
Those inide games do exist and they do have game breaking bugs in them due to how procedurally generated worlds are made. For the AI part mostly have seen it as an AI voice to txt input thing. So someone took a tech demo and made a game though it was short but also random onto what the NPC will say and take as input.
@kishin9

@classicallpvault8251
@classicallpvault8251 2 месяца назад
No it would actually make perfect sense for them. Where does AI-generated dialog add the most value? In the speech of random NPCs on the streets or the news bulletins on in-game radio stations. This is something I could really easily see Rockstar implementing. Imagine, for instance, that you've just gone on a rampage and lost a 5-star wanted level and hearing the news discuss your exploits and the body count among police and armed forces. Or imagine hearing random, but procedurally generated dialog from an NPC on the phone rather than scripted lines. Using AI doesn't equate to giving up control either. AI isn't actually AI but just a script working within human-set parametres.
@lizardemperorkorbac4281
@lizardemperorkorbac4281 2 месяца назад
Wouldn't they just use AI to generate Assets and if they're good enough then use them? As in: "AI please generate graphic assets for various plants" and then place these assets to build a forest map for example. Its not like they are leaving areas empty and rely on the AI to randomly generate them with whatever on the users end, right?

There's nothing sensationalist about claiming that incredibly powerful APUs will be the death of GPUs. They've destroyed the low end GPU segment already, and now are making forays into the mid-range. The Strix Halo APU has a more powerful iGPU than a PS5. And there's nothing wrong with sensationalism in general. Hyperbole is one of the most effective ways of communicating.

yeah, nvidia is shity, also since they often pretend things that where around for long are their new innovations. like that using AI to gernerate and use low resolution refference models and textures to optimize games, which is already several years old and does originate from hobbyists and not from nvidia, nvidia essentially just says they might perhaps add support for it on their gpu's so game devs will actually use it, since many new technologies just are not adapted by games. using AI to make things run faster and lighter also already is a well known thing for long in the scientiffic community and hobbyist projects. nvidia just takes existing tech, then makes a propetairy closed source clone and markets it as if it is new tech invented by them and as if they are revolutionairy, they are like apple with their Imath which beleives that 8gb of ram in a apple laptop is worth more than 16gb of ram because they put a clone of a old GNU+Linux software in their operating system, while the original one actually still works better than apples new one. NVIDIA just takes it a few hunderds to thousands times further. since atleast at apple you get the entire pc at that price, and next to that apple atleast only limits their own devices but not all other devices. while in reality nvidia typically stops or slow down actual advancement, since their gpu's are very locked down, and intentionally don't support many new methods and technologies so game devs won't use them and instead keep using the old propetairy nvidia methods which might be many times slower and less effient but nvidia often has a pattent on the basic way to do them efficiently meaning other companies can't really make gpus much better in that even with tons of engineering since nvidia made sure that only they are allowed to use that legacy technology and to just leave a small inefficient gab open since if all other brands would no longer support those legacy things then games might also start to support the new stuf. as a nice example with the intel a770 and also multiple amd cards there have been seen (way) more than doubling of performance in many cases, just but adapting softwares to use the new tech which is far better but doesn't work well on nvidia since nvidia intentionally does not support it. there have even been cases where some softwares to kind of recompile/optimize softwares written for those legacy nvidia shits resulted in over 15 time performance increases. microsoft olive for example was a software mostly only meant to try and translate as many of the shitty legacy nvidia things into stuf that any modern gpu excluding nvidia can run well, and it actually only did it to a part of the program, mostly only to the way the data was formated, as a result this has litterally givven performance increases over 15 times. even though it isn't really easy to use yet, especially since it only is supported on speciffic hardware and speciffic softwares is was designed for, so in this case it is mostly used for some types of AI, but in video games using such newer methods and instructions also gives similar performance increases. if developers will just by default use the new functions then this would be even better. there was a blender(3d graphics) demo/benchmark a while back on the blender site where they showed off performance increases due to now also supporting those new technologies, in that benchmark you saw the nvidia cards still performing the same since they only showed the best performance and since nvidia is super bad with new tech, their old method still worked the best on nvidia. the intel a770 however also was tested and that one got a insane performance increase of a few times where it even outperformed the rtx 4090TI by a decent amount(and note this is in 3d rendering, blender typically also uses high quality ray tracing, but also supports rasterization(high quality as well)). just a few days after it however I went back to the site to show it to someone, but it seems it got taken down from the site, probably due to nvidia getting mad/angry about it since nvidia is one of the biggest donators/funders of the project(which is logic since they are the richest company in te world by far. with some luck they will actually still lauch the support for that tech in the next version, however it is not uncommon for shareholders or big funders to litterally fund such projects speciffically to say that they are not allowed to publish certain technologies and just have to scrap them/throw them away even if they already work well.

128GB APU?! I wonder how much memory you can dedicate to video and if it would make a difference in AI LLM's like LLAMA3
@ted_van_loon
@ted_van_loon 2 месяца назад
depends on the motherboard, on pc the default is typically half of the total ram, so 64gb, sometimes you can mod it, so might be able to get it up to 96 or such. next to that on Linux you can tweak it even further and windows now also seems to support something somewhat like it even though the documentation is unclear. the moticable difference would be very great indeed. the main problem would be bandwith of the memory I assume, but you might be able to overcome that using memory compression. GNU+Linux has had great support for memory compression, for around as long as desktop pc's have been around. their compression is very good. and with cpu normally you limit the compression ratio to get lower latency, but for GPU's latency isn't really a problem as much gpu memory actually has very high latency but high bandwith. memory compression increases latency but also increases bandwith. normal GNU+Linux memory compression can easily double the bandwith of ram, but normally it is rarely used since many pcs have enough ram these days and for CPU's the latency is much more important in general. note however I do not know if this will also work on the memory reserved for the GPU, and it might require using open source drivers so you can enable it add it on on case gpu's still do not support it yet. the difference in such AI will be great however, much more stable with big datasets and also more efficient and fast with them. the better gpu and integrated npu will also help a lot.

If that's 128GB of on die RAM well that is going to be 1 huge die just to have all the dies needed to make up 128GB of DRAM. Depending on the type of DRAM they go with it might also cost to much for consumers to afford. Yes 128GB of shared RAM would be good it will also mean more power consumption, taking up more space and more cost.
@sysbofh
@sysbofh 2 месяца назад
I've been thinking about it, and one thing they should do is move these APU from 128 bits memory bus to 256. Mainboards with 4 memory slots are already mainstream, so this part is easy. Harder would be to change the memory controller - although I think the Epyc/Threadripper experience gained would help here. Can You imagine? An APU with 128MB of 256 bits DDR5 6800? THAT would be quite interesting.
@yumri4
@yumri4 2 месяца назад
@@sysbofh it would suck for the CPU part as DDR5 is a 80-bit DRAM thing. 80 doesn't divide evenly into 256. Yes DDR5 is 32-bit system RAM and yes i know 32 doesn't divide evenly into 80 though when you add the error correct byte per 32-bit it does.

Scoop! The 128GB Monster APU has a HUGE hidden feature: like the Apple M series of CPUs, this APU can unlock AI for x86 CPUs, as the built-in GPU can be run as an NPU. The big bottleneck for AI is the intensive memory bandwidth usage of performing MATMUL / MATADD operations on matrices. And the APU largely solves this by eliminating the bottleneck between the CPU and GPU/NPU, and also use the Ryzen's L2 and L3 caches.

In regards to Nvidia's news about AI usage; I've already said to some coworkers the other day that it's only a matter of time before the AI LLM's we have available and constantly improving, are able to generate most of the textures and other objects for game development. Also mentioned that with what is available right now, it's not too difficult for even a newbie like myself to just alter and fix whatever is generated. Provided you can get the output to be close enough, that is. From there, it's just a matter of photoshoping or some variation of graphics editing via many different possible software. And thing is, the AI tools available today as I type this, are already good enough to basically completely replace most graphics designers on the creation end of things. Provided the inputs are accurate enough, and the LLM is learned enough, it can output basically anything you need of any style. From there, the graphics designers job changes moreso to what I described before. Alteration, manipulation, editing. And even that stuff is being worked on with AI LLM's now too. Like animating a scene. It's still choppy, but it works well enough that the output can be fixed up relatively easily. Outputs to Mp4, so handbrake can help smooth it out for instance, upscale the resolution, etc. Already played with this. Could be better results, but more knowledge would probably help too. I imagine someone who knows more than me on how to use video editing programs, could alter it into a usable video clip. As it is right now, their model still only outputs to ... 7 fps. And I've increased the fps via handbrake to as high as 120fps. It does sort of smooth it out, but ultimately it's working from a 7fps video file. Need something else to fill in the blanks better for it first, so to speak. SVP4 I think might help do the trick, but it's still got some accuracy issues on some things IIRC. Moving straight lines for instance, mess it up. Or did, last I bothered with it, until I edited the settings enough that it stopped being as much as a problem. Still a problem, just not as much. Anyways. The point over all here is this. GPU's are getting powerful enough, that there will come a day that anyone can make a game or video or more... using just the power of their GPU alone. No need for other coworkers on the project for the things you aren't quite able to do yet; the AI included handles that somehow instead. And whatever the GPU's AI doesn't handle, the CPU's AI handles instead. Or combined with both. (There are also other cards that act as co-processors for stuff like AI, but let's not get too deep into the weeds on this.) Of course, people will still work together on these things they make, whatever it is, but there will be less need for the multiple people who are there only because the main core needs them for those various tasks they can't quite do themselves. Graphics design, is, well, a very logical thing to replace first. (Sorry graphics designers.) Even if the AI model uses potentially copyrighted material for its learning, as long as the end product used by the person doesn't infringe on those copyrights, it's not much any different from for instance, making a rip-off cartoon of mickey and friends. It might "look" similar. It might "seem" similar, but it's different enough that it's also, legal. So in terms of gaming and the games industry, this looks a lot like asset swaps and other such things that happen with the quick cash grab devs that appear on steam, etc and so forth. Like with the simple clones, other games like that. The LLM might be trained on a certain game, or style of games, or an entire genre itself perhaps to avoid particular legal issues with specific developers; and then the outputs altered to a point where it becomes an original creation again. For those who disagree with this assessment, look no further than remix music made from retro and current games. And let's be honest here, they get away with A LOT. Some are really good about actually changing things up enough to avoid legal issues. Others, are basically blatantly just reusing the music note for note without much more of a change than some pitch and tempo maybe. Sorry, but even I can do that. And I'm no expert with stuff like Audacity, yet it's easy enough. Point is, we've already been doing what AI could make easier for us to do. In a lot of industries surrounding media, gaming, and software development. End example? Copy and paste coders. It's entirely possible to make working software doing nothing more than copy and pasting example code found on the internet. You might need to fix some things sometimes, so some expertise is required, but it is also entirely possible to get working software without having to fix anything if you know enough, or are lucky enough. Once AI in our personal rigs can produce code, graphics, music, and story... we basically become the directors of our personal indie companies if we so wish to become one. It's just a matter of learning how to effectively utilize all these new tools. Some prior experience in each, would probably help a lot too. Past me, 2010 me, roughly, kind of saw a lot of this coming back then. Since then, I've been trying to learn a bit about each thing possible to be done with computers, so that with enough of this jack of all trades knowledge, once I have AI available to help fill the gaps; I can start to master each of those things with it as a hopefully faithful lackey essentially. I.E. I know what I need, and how it should look as a result, but use it to help fill the gaps in my own expertise until I fill them myself, and use it for other things instead. In terms of game development, this makes it so much easier for someone like myself to start churning out sellable product. Note I don't say quality here, yet, because ultimately for now, a lot will kind of be obvious AI ware to put it simply. But with time and practice, that discernable line between human made and AI made, will start to blur and disappear. For context, imagine those really cheap games found on steam, the really... bad... looking ones. Terrible story. Reused assets. Buggy as heck. Etc. Those ones. The ones we don't even dare call 'Indie' games, because they make good indie look bad to those who can't tell the difference. AI, will replace that at first, the bad indie as it were. And being AI made, can be made cheap price wise too, to boot. So that end of the steam library is taken over easily enough. From there, it's just a matter of tuning in the quality, so to speak. From there, the price can increase for each product made. And since you have much less employees to pay... the profit margin is, much higher.

Lol, the price will be brought down for developers, but the costs won't be brought down for consumers cause investors need more gold to line their pockets. Great, in the future we get to pay more for less!

Gamer Meld: the cause of dev will go down, a win for everyone. Dev: nice we could use those money for smthing else. Publisher: will sell them at the same price or higher, more growth. Investors: more profits! Consumers: so not everyone wins after all...

Strix Halo is what happens when someone designs integrated GPU with assumptions consumers are paying for the extra GPU power over just paying for the CPU side. Just to be clear Strix HALO is not the mid-range killer. If you have 256bit CPU style memory bus with DIMM:s you will have about 1:4th of memory clocks compared to GPU. So it would be comparable to having 64bit memory bus of next gen GPU:s. It's still moving the minimum reasonable discrete GPU cost upwards. Manufacturing costs influence the performance heavily, those costs get multiplied by margin used to pay fixed costs and small profits by 4 companies in the value chain. This simply means, GPU makers have to pay TSMC and memory makers more and charging customers more for each tier in their naming scheme to move each naming tier higher in terms of performance. Which Nvidia already did with 40 series, they jumped to a lot more expensive manufacturing process that gave them higher frequency and more transistors at given area, but at same point increased the relative costs of bus width because memory controllers don't scale but silicon for it became more than twice as expensive.

I suspect corporate marketing shenanigans going on, lots of hype on AMD’s Strix Halo line of chips, “lots of product in the pipeline “ ‘wait for this”… could be a diversional tactic. To take the headlines away from QUALCOMM and the snapdragon elite X laptops… only time will tell.

I've seen STUNNING and AMAZING unreal demos in the last few years. That being said, I haven't seen any games that make me say that is SOO impressive compared to Crysis 3 which came out like a decade ago. Sure there are some tweaks here and there but not much makes me feel like the 3D "feels" more real.

Bullshitte. an APU is smaller than a GPU and it uses less power. GPU will always outperform APU because of the size. You can't win against physics.

This goes past intentional erroneous words to generate comment traffic. This is straight up misinterpretation of tables you show yourself. The comparison is against zen3+ and you keep saying its against zen4 when there is a clear regression in IPC against zen4.

I think AI absolutely should be used to breathe life into older video games. But I don't think it should be doing it as a chunk of code in a firmware update. I'd rather see AI used to automate the shit out of all the remastering projects like Skyblivion. They've been sitting on the back burner for years because of how much of a time sink these updated meshes and animations are. AI could shorten the time investment considerably, so these passion projects are actually feasible. But no matter how far AI can take it, the project still needs the input of human hands and minds making tasteful choices. If it's fully automated on the driver side I can only imagine it looking really, _really_ glitchy.

Strix and Strix Halo ~ All your GPUs are belong to us. Yeah, right. So ~ that's an APU part. That means it's built for laptops & mobile. "But they will put it in desktop." No, they might make an OEM package that they sell to microcentre and best-buy and places, (Harvey Norman to Australians) to make low-cost desktop parts for Mum & Dad home users, and office workers, but that's not going to be like the Ryzen 9000 series that home builders can make. "But they're planning one with up to 16 cores." Yeah, I see that. I am curious, but I still want a R9-9950X and a low ~ midrange GPU. I don't want to get the thing home and find my power management and clocks are all locked down because this is a Mobile part you bought cheap, and you shouldn't be running Linux on it anyway. I am watching with interest, but I am not inclined to be very trusting about this. I don't think that APU part is going to be equivalent to the normal 9000 series part. I'd be fairly happy to be proved wrong, I would be a potential customer if I am, but ~ [sigh] I think I'll hold off and wait for 3rd party reviews, from both people who are predisposed to like it, and people who are not.

NVidia seems not to grasp that more and more AAA games are not play by yourself experiences. So the ability to randomly render something locally isn't useful if the other players are not seeing the same thing. Developers who fall for this will be heading down a very dead end. The real trick is being able to render the same exact thing to and large number of people all loving at it live. That is very different. For the APU, well... lets just say it is going to cost you. 40 CU sounds nice. but that would appear to be about an RX580 worth of power, not something that AAA gamers are going to drool over. It will likely be good for light duty office style photoshop, perhaps. Otherwise, it is equal to a 10 year old GPU.

I hope my wallet is ready for strix halo. Because I’m dying to replace my laptop. But the recent releases of of the trix point and lunar lake and the snapdragon x elite aren’t the level of performance. And if trix halo is going to be more power efficient then a convertable with a 4050m-4070m(because i wanted to by a 4070 convertable) then strix halo has my money. It’s only sad that it’s expected to release next year (rumors) and nog before this years Christmas

Whenever someone who comments on game development, but knows nothing of modeling, texturing, lighting, coding or any of the other necessary skillsets required starts talking about how Nvidia is going to do something for 'game design' anyone who has 2 brain cells to rub together who does know these things knows 1 thing for sure: Run like hell the opposite direction, as fast as possible. Nvidia RUINS everything they touch outside of GPU design. DLSS is trash; 'PhysX' was a monster failure and there are multiple others that have faded into well deserved irrelevance. Stop falling for this nonsense.

Lets be honest no one cares 3a's in the past where shit even before pushing the realism in games cause they have no soul i dont its bad cause making maybe 4k texture would be easier but only NVIDIA would benefit from it cause i bet they will somehow Gatekeep this so only they ai cores will give ok look and performance

I don't see a purpose to 128gb on a laptop apu.... what could you need that for? productivity? thats a LOT of spreadsheets lol ..... but even editing video doesn't need that much, so they must be thing of AI reasons... but why would you do it on a lappie?? such a power constraint..... but then again, if no one ever builds it then we'll never know what's possible.... I'm still anti-AI .... that shizz IS scarier than you think..... they didn't even mean to make it... they were doing word prediction, like auto-correct on your phone, and suddenly it just 'understands' ... like it became conscious... wait that's not the right word... it just became intelligent...... bah! I saw a short vid today on how it happened and it's freaky! ... someone's gonna put too much power behind it and poof, suddenly the matrix isn't fiction :(
