Reason being you typically want to hold an area with as little military presence as possible but Afghanistan has a lot of places for rebels to hide, as well as one other key reason I won't list here. It's also not an area many people would want to emigrate to so it's difficult to set up your own population base there. Remember, the same general Afghan fighting spirit you're applauding is the same ones that was given billions in equipment, trained for years, and had total air control, and still fled at the first sight of the Taliban approaching a key airbase.

Hamas' acceptance of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders isn't the same as a 2 state solution because the peace that Hamas has offered Israel is only supposed to be temporary, while the 2 state solution is supposed to be permanent. The 2 state solution requires the Palestinians to recognize Israel and normalize relations with it, which Hamas refuses to do.
