We continue our two day overnight tuna trip Date: 9/5-9/6 2023 Location: 50 miles off Atlantic City, NJ The most tuna chicks/storm petrols I have ever seen!!! Insane chunking for yellowfin tuna
I remember those store bought metal gaffs you're using here. I think they were made by aftco or something? Been a while. I just remember how cheaply made they were, but mainly how the whole gaff pole would get bent, and those useless black foam rubber grips would slip and slide up the gaff pole and right when you gaff a big fish, like a 100+ lb ahi, and slip right off the end of the gaff , coming out of your hand and end up in the water, then your messed up!! I never bought another one!!! I usually didn't buy gaffs, unless they were made by someone who did it well. I just started making all my own gaffs with wood handles and chose different size gaff hooks. Galvanized were strong, but they rust, but stainless gaff hooks would bend open unles it was really strong thick guage. The grips I made by wrapping braided handline wrapped tightly and they never got loose!!! I put gaffs through so much stress, because I was a full time commercial fisherman in Hawaii where i was born and raised and lived on the big island and we have some of the best big ahi fishing, and a lot of gorilla ahi, in the 200-300 lb size. Yeah, when I first saw those gaffs I thought they looked pretty nice, but I bent open the gaff head on my first 5 day fishing trip and not long afterwards those grips just slipped and came off. I threw it away, and never used one again! I told a lot of sport fisherman how terrible and weak they were and that they would end up losing fish, which they did!!! Loved my homemade custom gaffs!! Especially the ones I made for smaller fish like mahi mahi and ono. I used a really small stainless gaff head and they were so good, and very accurate!! Looks like you guys had fun though! Aloha from beautiful Hawaii
We have made a few gaffs but mostly for mahi. Maybe we'll try one for the tuna!! Man I can't thank you enough for watching all the way from Hawaii!!!! I have so much fun Yellowfin tuna fishing on our channel!!
I feel like the big mean fish know how and when to put the heat on us. I remember Josh and Zac getting fish to the boat in like 2 minutes I hook up and it’s the meanest nastiest fight going. They know lol 😂. Glad you had the rod on that “so you want to fight a tuna”
Yeah man! Check out some of our other vids. We have had lots of double digit tuna days all on light tackle! Thank you so much for watching. Where you from?
@@reaperfishingnj8623 ya I’ve watched a lot of them now. My mom is from Jersey it’s my new place I wanna go fish, maybe this fall.. I’m from Southern California.
one of the guys from the gemini sent some video to our chat of that day with them hand feeding them around the boat and yellows coming up 5 feet from the boat just eating for an hour. had to have been the best day of yellowfin fishing last year and i missed it because of work!
@@OutaMyTreeFishing thanks so much for watching! Depends on the timing of my days off with moon, weather, tides, etc. Seems also like last year wasn't very good down there from what I hear. I didn't get a chance to make it down last year. But....if the bite is on I absolutely love getting down there. What a fun fishery!!!
Lumitec Seablaze X2. I use the Lumitec Poco digital control/module and using my phone I can change the color to red, green, blue, white, or alternating. So far so good!
@@reaperfishingnj8623 Thanks Chris! I’ll certainly look into them been hearing a lot of failure stories with these nights so glad to hear that you like what you have so far again, thanks buddy you’re the best!
Super excited angler: See you gotta hook the fish and then chase them to stay away from the sharks Capt Chris: No we are staying here. Where the fish are.
these fish were fairly mobile but in a small area if that makes sense. you really wanted to stay in tight with the masses of chick birds. So in this case and beautiful conditions you'll wanna drift every single time.
I'm curious was it your Shamano 2 speed on your shimano rod that broke? I have two of the same setups when I was tightened the reel to the rod. I heard a noise like a cracking on both setups.
I would for sure go with the 40s!!!! We have been close to getting spooled on a few larger YF and BF. Confident with the 25s you would have been spooled. Probably negligible weight difference and the price change is worth it
