The bystander effect is without a doubt one of the most fascinating, scary and easy-to-exploit aspects of human nature. Our innate desire to fit in (which makes sense on an evolutionary level) is at the core of almost every outrage and confidence trick perpetrated by man against man, from religion, to advertising, to serial killing.
@mach9002
@mach9002 Год назад
why serial killing?
@oliverholmes-gunning5372
@oliverholmes-gunning5372 Год назад
@@mach9002 Serial killers frequently use social compliance techniques to entrap victims and/or avoid detection; think of Ted Bundy, or Jeffrey Dahmer. It's like Stellan Skarsgard says in the Fincher remake of Girl With The Dragon Tattoo- “Why don’t people trust their instincts? They sense something’s wrong - someone’s walking too close behind them - yet they don’t cross the street. You knew something was wrong - you even knew what it was - but you came back into the house. Did I force you? Did I grab you and drag you in? I just offered you a drink. You’d never think the fear of offending could be stronger than the fear of pain - but you know what? It is. They always come willingly.”

I was out running one night, along a relatively busy promenade, and I saw a young man passed out on the board walk. He was moaning and I could see foam coming from the corner of his mouth. Everyone else kept walking around him like he wasn’t even there. I stopped running immediately and went over to assist him, called the ambulance and waited with him till they arrived. After about 2 minutes the same people that were ignoring him were rushing over to see if he was ok and asked if they could do anything to help him. It’s amazing what kind of change can be initiated with a single action, and sad what is deemed acceptable because everyone else finds it so. Be the change you want to see
@Jabberwockybird

The sad thing is that mentally challenged or drug addled homless people create a "boy who cried wolf" effect. Where many people are used to seeing someone in a compromising position, so they don't realize when there is a real problem. So now there's two effects working against somone who needs help.

Saw this happen at a Walmart a few weeks ago. Was picking up an order right next to the entrance. Had just gotten it when an evacuation* alarm went off. Usually the standard procedure is taking the stuff somewhere nearby to make sure it's all there. None of the employees looked concerned at all, then something inside forced me to ask, "they workin' on something or is this a drill?" The associate said they didn't know but that it was _probably_ nothing. Decided to check the order outside and notified a couple of people walking in that there _might_ be an evacuation in progress. Waited a few minutes to see if people would start actually evacuating, with cell phone ready to dial 911. Nothing happened. *It didn't say what the actual emergency was supposed to be, just an alarm and voice telling everyone to calmly exit the store as soon as possible. The vagueness stuck with me as much as the general total lack of interest. While it might be someone's idea of discouraging panic, _not_ knowing what to look for made the whole thing even more unnerving.

I'm of two minds about things like this. On the one hand, things like the Asch conformity experiment clearly demonstrate that some people will give an obviously wrong answer just to conform with the group (whatever their reason may be). However, in real-life situations where this effect can be applied, it serves a useful purpose for gathering information about group information and rules. Conformity, in this sense, isn't a "problem", but we'd do well not to let it override logic and sense.

i knew about those effects and im fascinated by them - but one should never forget that by intervening in the experiment, you do affect the outcome of it. it is not normal behavior of people we see, its insecure reaction to an abnormal behavior of others. the bystander effect does not work the way it is shown. it was the reaction of someone not familiar with the situation that got reassured by someone that is perceived as familiar. in other words; seeing someone so clearly NOT react to a noise will convey the idea that this person is not confused and aware of the situation and that there is no need for his intervention. he nonverbally gave the idea, as someone that is familiar with his surrounding, that everything is ok. that is NOT a case for the bystander effect. you cannot paint a picture of natural reaction by creating an unnatural environment.

I actually found myself in one of these situations (the audience standing ovation). Went to see an open air show. This show was hyped up to be the best thing ever. I was really excited to see it. The seating was really cramped and narrow and I was squashed in by the people either side of me and my knees were crushed against the back of the seat in front of me. The show itself was disappointing too with some moments that were, in my opinion, quite ridiculous. The show ends and I started clapping as those involved put in a lot of effort and I respected that. But everybody stood up to applaud and I was literally the only one still sitting down. Eventually I reluctantly got up too since it was both physically and psychologically uncomfortable to stay sitting.

I'd see this a lot in college, where a whole group would be waiting outside of a classroom. As more people would arrive, they'd assume the door was locked because of the group and they'd stand there, too. I'd walk up and check the door just in case, & about 80% of the time it was actually unlocked, so they'd all file in after me lol not that I'm immune to the bystander effect in any way, but it's pretty interesting what happens when you don't follow the group

Same thing with me when I was in college. The first few times I was like whatever, but after that I would always call people out on their stupidity. After opening the door I would look at the line of people and say "did none of you think to check if the doors unlocked?" Or things along that line hoping I would lead by example and let people know it's ok to double check and not blindly follow what others are doing

I'm ND and life confuses me like this literally constantly. I would have thrown the results off because I always ask for clarification because life makes zero sense to me and I have no pride left lmao Also, that elevator one wouldn't work where I live, there's quite a few shopping centres here where you enter the elevator from one side and the opposite doors open when you get to the floor, so you would just assume that was happening.

5:09 see, this right here wouldn't work on me, cus I already can't hear what you're saying lol. This is how conversation sounds to me on a regular basis so odds are I would've just been sitting there thinking "yea, he probably said something and I just didn't catch what it was" ( T_T)

I once, at a stand-up show, was subjected to this sort of experiment. I went to the bathroom and the sound cut out. When I came back and a few jokes later the punchline was "snake armpit". I leaned over to my friend Nikki and asked why it was funny? Always skewing the Bell Curve...😑

People advise women who use the subway to always go to the most crowded part of the train, as if it was some kind of shield against aggressors. But the more people on the train, the less likely a person will receive assistance if they are assaulted: bystanders will feel less responsible if there are many people. But if there are only 2 or 3 people witnessing an assault, they are more likely to intervene and help the person in need. Surveys even showed that some men changed seats to have a better view of the assault when it happened in a crowded train. On the other hand, a high number of people on a train may dissuade someone to assault someone else as they may fear that others will strike back. Unless they know the surveys and choose their victims in the most crowded trains.

I 100% know I would buck the trend. I've never been a sheep and always check things out or question. Has led to me not being super popular, but I'd rather be the person that checks out the injured worker or escapes the fire than not.

I actually experienced something the other day. I got a new job and was in orientation. It is a loud manufacturing job, so during the tour of the plant we had a nifty reciver with headphones. The tour guide had a microphone clip thing and each of us had a reciver to his microphone that went into our headphones. There was like a dozen or so of us listening. I couldn't hear him because his microphone clip was facing down. If I turned up my recievier I just got louder manufacturing noises and not his voice. No one said a word for about 3 to 5 minutes. I made my way to the front of the class and waited for my moment to tell him his microphone was facing the wrong way. If I wouldn't have said anything we would have had an awkward experience when he realized we heard none of his tour.... I couldn't believe everyone was too afraid to say anything.

I was waiting on a train and a lady with mental health issues was screaming. When the train was approaching, it was obvious that she was going to jump in front of it. So obvious that even the conductor stopped the train short. Out of 50+ ppl on that platform, i was the only one who grabbed her. She tried so hard that I had her shirt over her face at one point. No one else on that platform helped.

I have seen the most tragic event related to this theory/effect not Once but Two times. And both the time it was as serious as the matter of life and death. There were Two road accidents in our city and the poor victims were helplessly lying on the road injured with blood gushing out of their bodies. And both the times, it took a mere minute for a substantial large crowd to appear and gather around surrounding the victims. Everybody looking at him and then at each other like it is them who is the actual victim here. But when me and my friend went to stop an auto to take the guy to the nearest hospital, people started helping us to lift the person to get inside the vehicle. I thought about it and later I realised that it is basically our subconscious mind which stops us to make the first move. Even though our intentions are noble, to help the person in distress, but we still wait for someone else to make that "First move." Moreover, people are afraid because they think that if they will get themselves involved with that incident by helping that person, then after a while the cops are sure to get involved and would ask them a million questions related to that accident and about the victim which after a short while would transform into being something like a harassment for them. But the good news was that, both the times, with the blessings of our Lord Almighty, both the victims survived and were soon out of danger. Thank God 🙏.

That is why you delegate tasks. For example you tell someone to call an ambulance and tell another to apply pressure to a wound ect. It helps bypass the effect

I freaking love the guy from the standing up but who just straight up asks _"Why are you standing up?"_ which is exactly what I assume I would have done from the beginning. I don't like doing a thing unless it has some kind of point or purpose that I'm aware of... Unless it's entertaining, Then I'll just do whatever

Funny to think I'm watching this like "I wouldn't do that" but then realise that nearly everyone unwittingly tested on hidden camera here would probably say the same thing in our situation as an onlooker.

I remember stepping in during a dog attack once. Afterwards, I heard this: “I can’t believe you reacted so quickly, I was just frozen.” Don’t be a sheep. The last dance clip was completely understandable. Some people will dance whenever the chance arises.

I think your mainly taught to follow others in school, you’re made to listen to your teachers. You’re made to follow other students in emergencies, when you’re in elementary they tell you to be in one line.
