I've had my cichlids for a year now. They reproduce like crazy! But I've always had anubias, java fern, and crypts in their tank. They've never eaten any of them. They may have rearranged the smaller ones a bit, but that's no big deal. I just upgraded their tank a few days ago and added a LOT of different anubias, java fern, and crypts. They seem to love their new, bigger environment! Don't let anyone tell you you can't have any plants in a cichlid tank. Stem plants wouldn't do well, but the ones I've listed are great. Couple those with frogbit and it keeps a more stable space for them. ❤

EBAs are great fish! They’re like puppies. They follow you around and look like they’re smiling. Mine use leaf litter for spawning, so if you put some large leaves in you’ll see them carrying them around in their mouth. The male will pick up a leaf, show the female, and do a little shimmy shake dance. However they also seem to destroy red plants, maybe for the same reason. Love all your tanks!

MD, I LOVE your 'scapes and fish selections. Showing us all of the different things that can be done and how interesting it can be. But I swear, you and Matt together are the best comedic power. I had a Mbuna cichlid tank running for over a year. It was fully planted with a ton of anubius and they never once ate any of the plants! In my other tank at the moment I have about 25 blue Acaras as they decided to breed about 4 month ago. The mum fish is an electric blue Acara and the father is a blue Acara. The babies took after their father but they have a lovely sheen of electric blue in them. Hands down my favourite fish I’ve kept so far!

MD, you made me grow fond of the Blue Acaras, I love them. I was thinking to build a tank with them. Then you built the mbuna tank and that completely ruined everything because now I want a mbuna tank. Today you showed the blue acara AGAIN and I want to have BOTH... LOL.... Great video as always. OH btw, tell the Cichlids Police that George Farmer has about 10 mbunas on a planted (full of Anubias) 45 Gal for over 2 years and they are not only thriving as they are breading as well - and that only happened after he added the plants. 😆

I'll be honest, I really love the yellowy tint that tannins give a tank! It feels so much more natural to me.

That tank looks like it was set up a year ago. You do absolutely amazing work and I wish I could visit your studio some day. Incredible. Great video work as well.

Ignore the people that say mbuna and plants don’t mix. Yeah it’s not there natural habitat but it can and does work. I kept a VERY heavily stocked mbuna tank with Java ferns and anubias for years.

I liked seeing Kate in the background when Matt was explaining! I hope she goes into a deep fishkeeping arc.

Matt looks so tired! You both work so hard, thank you MD and Matt for teaching us everything you have, giving us insight to your lives and giving us all inspiration for our own aquariums, terrariums, and paludariums. Yous are amazing!

In my experience talking with people who've kept both Malawi and Tanganyikan cichlids, both Anubias and Javafern work well with them, as both plants are very though and do well in the harder water both types of fish enjoy. Also, both the Acara species look lovely.

The Mbuna tank is off the scale 👏🏻 I’ve always preferred more hardscape as opposed to plants 👌🏻

Those Royals are beautiful. I can't wait to see them develop. I do like fish you have to look at to appreciate them. I've got a river tank with pearl danio. They look pretty bland at first glance but when you watch them you see some beautiful iridescent colours.

my nana used to have a column tank that was an octagon, its what really got me into fish, i bet you could do something crazy with something like that!

MD do you read comments? I just wanted to let you know that I have 15 no filter no water change ecosystem tanks because of you!!!! It's so insane once they're settled! All i do is top off the water and feed the fish!!! EASY

Love the cichlid choice for the tank! I have yet to keep acara but there are a few types that interest me. They are furs sure on my list of must have fish! I'm definitely looking for those kribensis like cichlids next those were so cool!

I definitely love your work even tho i'm not commenting to much around. Keep up the great work you inspire us! About what you said at 5:20 i think is the opposite. The plant usually when a leaf is in poar shape or a bit older will extract the resources from that and use it for the new growing ones. Some kind of "canibalism" if you wish. But you are doing a great job by trimming those old leafs off to prevent them to rot and polute water. Having that much of patience is amazing, good job mate! I learn alot from your videos as an aquascaper and a content creator!

I'm happy to see the bigger fish making a comeback. The ones I aspire toward keeping. The little ones and Bettas that I can do.

Further MD - Since you have a studio, why not have a centralized filtration that you could tie all your tanks in if you like? Would require some plumbing, but you could use a central big fluidized filter or trash bins full of media.

Just got a royal acara last month. At first it was shy in quarantine then it was a total terror in my 55g community. I moved it to my SA 75g and it seems to be holding its own and not bothering anyone yet. Kind of wishing I didn't get it now.

I got a pair of electric blue acara about a month ago and they are just water puppies! I swear, when I come to the tank with some food, they literally push half way out of the water to meet me and get food.

Would love to see you get into gudgeons. I got some Empire Gudgeons on a whim one day, and they quickly became some of my favorites. The male gets insane orange colors and dances around when spawning. Super cool fish!

Hi @MDFishTanks I recently watched your video on gluing plants to a hardscape root because my Anubias bonsai (not in-vitro) just completely disintegrated in my newly set up nanocube. I separated the plant in two and glued them with a tiny bit of a suitable glue, but did not cut any roots. Background and ground cover are doing fine. I have noticed a fairly high NO2 and NO3 level.... Any idea what could have gone wrong...😢?

Since they are both acaras, can they interbreed? They are both beautiful fish, they are great additions to that tank!
