In this episode I talk about the influence click-bait culture has had on our expectations as artists. I make the case that great songwriting is not a hackable skill that can be learned through memorizing formulas. Learning to be a songwriter does not come with a roadmap that goes from point A to point B. In order to be great writers we must submit ourselves to the process of developing and feeding our fascination with words. We must become playful with language in all forms. Unlike playing an instrument, a skill which is easily broken down into subsets such as scales, chords and rhythms, songwriting is much more enigmatic. Craft and technique will only take you so far. A genuine disciplined approach to writing down the stories all around you and within you, will take you further as a songwriter than any formula or quick tip ever could. Stay the course and don't buy into the toxic click-bait culture of formulaic songwriting and art creation. Have patience and discipline. Learn to grow your tolerance for the unknown; that is where songwriting skill is found. Your greatest songs await your discovery in the uncharted landscapes of your sub-conscious. Right on, Write on.

I agree with most of the video! But you can actually teach tangible things that are important in songwriting like rhetorical devices and figures of speech which are directly evident in the greatest works of songwriters such as Dylan, Cohen, Lennon/McCartney, etc. Most of the time their best songs have at least a dozen or more different types of rhetorical devices built in to the lyrics, and that's tangibly measurable and learnable, whereas songs that are forgotten and "boring" overwhelmingly have little to no rhetorical devices used in them. A writer needs to become aware of those patterns and they can learn them in "Elements of Eloquence" by Mark Forsyth. There's about 50-100 different types of devices that appear most often in songwriting. He has a lot of song examples, but here's a quote he said about Shakespeare that also applies to songwriters: “Shakespeare was not a genius. He was, without the distant shadow of a doubt, the most wonderful writer who ever breathed. But not a genius. No angels handed him his lines, no fairies proofread for him. Instead, he learnt techniques, he learnt tricks, and he learnt them well. Genius, as we tend to talk about it today, is some sort of mysterious and combustible substance that burns brightly and burns out. It's the strange gift of poets and pop stars that allows them to produce one wonderful work in their early twenties and then nothing. It is mysterious. It is there. It is gone.”

@@jimiwmusic Cheers and I highly recommend taking a read through that book, it's mind blowing how many rhetorical patterns exist that have been used for centuries even until now but we aren't taught the names for haha

I clicked on this because I thought it was a formula to increase my songwriting time from two seconds 😃. But seriously, you are raising issues at work in many musicians that render them what I term as enemies of music. In seeking the musical experience with them I've always left in pain. They looked like musicians playing what sounded like music, but Music was rather more nurturing with me, as are her friends.
