A team of researchers has developed a new generation of tiny, agile drones that look, act and maneuver like actual insects allowing them to operate in cramped spaces and withstand collisions. (Learn more: news.mit.edu/20...)

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an independent, coeducational, privately endowed university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our mission is to advance knowledge; to educate students in science, engineering, technology, humanities and social sciences; and to tackle the most pressing problems facing the world today. We are a community of hands-on problem-solvers in love with fundamental science and eager to make the world a better place.
The MIT RU-vid channel features videos about all types of MIT research, including the robot cheetah, LIGO, gravitational waves, mathematics, and bombardier beetles, as well as videos on origami, time capsules, and other aspects of life and culture on the MIT campus. Our goal is to open the doors of MIT and bring the Institute to the world through video.

I wonder if it could use other energy sources, like solar or something. Though I imagine solar panels would make it hard for it to lift off the ground
@wc-william
@wc-william 3 года назад
@@SCPFanMY That is a good point! I have seen tiny solar panels that are light enough and can roughly power a mini dc motor. To be fair, I have no idea how power intensive this new insect-like mechanism is, but given my previous experiences on drones (FPV, VTOL, etc. I worked for DJI😀), they are usually less efficient than what the most of us would expect. Solar panel also only provides instantaneous power (i.e. instant death when there is no direct sunlight), and therefore having one alone is probably not optimal for drones haha.
@SCPFanMY
@SCPFanMY 3 года назад
@@wc-william Huh, that's pretty cool. Though another thing to keep in mind is what this technology would be used for. I saw another comment mentions that it could be used for pollinating plants
@wc-william
@wc-william 3 года назад
@@SCPFanMY I'd love to see that! But also hopefully not because all our natural pollinators have died gone extinct. I guess if at some point we can make them cheap and environmentally friendly enough to be disposable, no constant power source is fine, but otherwise you will have a hard time keeping track and/or recovering all of those lost in the wild.
@ayushin82
@ayushin82 3 года назад
@@SCPFanMY if solar gave anywhere near as much power as batteries of the similar size, every phone would have a solar panel on its back. In reality no one puts solar panels on phones, because it would take something like two weeks in a very sunny place to fully charge phone battery.

The fact it doesn't use a lipo battery for unpowered flight means it's probably not terribly efficient...
