Fall fishing and photography trip in the Outer Banks of NC for flounder, redfish, trout, and stripers from a kayak. Here's my little personal mini-doc of my kayak fishing/photography excursion on the Outer Banks of NC. Didn't catch many big fish but there was plenty to catch and it makes it all the better to do it from a kayak. Being stealthy allows better views of wildlife, and doesn't pollute the waters like gas-powered boats, and you feel more connected to the experience, area, and its wildlife. Hope you enjoy this little adventure in this beautiful area.

Thanks Johnny! You might find it interesting, the added bit of 'extra dimension' in the shadows and highlights at section beginning at 12mins...notice how the shadows of the grass get progressively lighter and lighter and the 'camera flare' as well. Perhaps a fungus related edit lol. That song is a Dead psyche-classic as well.

I love how you're listening to the Grateful Dead. China Cat Sunflower is such a great song, it can fit the mood of anything really. I'm actually taking a vacation in NC very soon I'm gonna be doing some kayak fishing with my friend. We gonna be at the coast for a few days.

I just got a Tarpon 120 in April but haven't had time to get it out on anything other than a small lake, on which I feel pretty comfortable. I'm hoping to finally get it to the coast this summer to try my hand at fishing and kayaking at the same time--I'm an amateur at both! Aside from enjoying the scenery and quiet of your video, it was also interesting to learn those things about the Ocracoke Bridge. Those conditions would never have occurred to me. Thanks for the great video and all the tidbits you included. I enjoyed your kayak loading video, too.

I fish structure almost exclusively here at home(OCMD). When I snag, I find that pulling in the direction of the snag only makes it worse. I go back upcurrent of the snag and pull in the opposite direction that it was traveling when it snagged. Probably 80% of the time I can easily free the jig. Tight lines!

Very nice! Is that a diy anchor stake?
@AlanHowellphotovideo
@AlanHowellphotovideo 4 года назад
It is indeed! An 8' fiberglass garden stake, PVC Tee, and some 3/4" heat shrink tubing. Far better than anything I found in the stores and only cost about $40. However, the eight-foot long 3/4" diameter stakes are getting very hard to find now at that price.

a pedal drive kayak would really make fishing out there a lot easier during tide changes so you can fish while keeping yourself in position or while moving down a bank. you should look into a pelican hydryve 110
@AlanHowellphotovideo
@AlanHowellphotovideo 4 года назад
I appreciate the thought but there is no way I'd give up my Viking Profish Reload for any model Pelican lol. While a pedal drive is good for backing a fish out of structure, once you get used to the paddle maneuvers its not an issue. The main reason however is safety. The Reload is far, far safer because of its length and buoyancy (per mass) and ability to track and surf. I go offshore often and anything less than 12' is flat out dangerous in anything less than calm conditions. Pedal drives are generally too heavy per their mass to respond to unseen lateral waves. Hence why when you look online for sinking or flipped kayaks or similar, they are almost always a heavier yak or pedal drive. This comes from 40 years of experience in kayaks of all kinds and knowing hull designs.
@nashbarber4085
@nashbarber4085 4 года назад
Alan Howell well there’s also 14 ft pro anglers. i prefer pedal drive because it gives me the option to fish while i’m moving down a bank
@AlanHowellphotovideo
@AlanHowellphotovideo 4 года назад
@@nashbarber4085 The PA 14's are very stable but just too heavy and expensive for what you get really. The hatches leak pretty bad too. For comparison, my Reload is the same weight as the Pelican Hydryve but at 14'8". The PA's are often guide fleet boats though because the name pays well...probably more than any other company.

@@AlanHowellphotovideo totally stumbled onto the video. I don't really fish just new to NC (Raleigh area) and was psyched to find out these kinds of activities are out there and was especially psyched to hear the unmistakeable sound of Jerry. You may have made me a conver to kayak fishing. Is it an expensive /difficult hobby to get into?
@AlanHowellphotovideo
@AlanHowellphotovideo 4 года назад
@@krapart Not too bad. If you plan to go offshore though, definitely get a longer kayak. I highly recommend the Viking Reload. Its also good for just touring the Intercoastal and marshland areas for wildlife viewing/photography, (I'm a photographer/digital media artist by trade). But admittedly, once you catch a few decent fish it becomes pretty addicting lol. I've been a huge Dead fan for quite awhile and collect tons of old shows. I think this is also the best thing about RU-vid is finding so many good compilations and show footage that was previously lost in the shuffle. Just finished watching some of the footage from the Egypt '78 shows...love that 'Fire On the Mountain' version.

Hi Jeremy! Sorry, just now seeing this comment. I put in either on the beach or at one of the marinas, or the public parking area right there as you are entering Nags Head on 64 at the Melvin Daniels Bridge. If the weather is clear and the wind is low, I definitely do a surf launch though.

@AlanHowellphotovideo

Redfish and trout will be your best bet. Most fish there will hit a white bucktail or paddle tail jig. I normally use 12lb-20lb flourocarbon leader.
