A DIY kayak loader that uses a winch instead of your back to car top your boat! Easy one-person loading with simple PVC and winch solution for heavy boats or for those with back or shoulder issues. I have standard Yakima areostyle crossbars and basic round sidebars that you can find from any roof rack supplier but this would work for any shape bar as long as you have access to the end of the bar. As for the parts for the build...why spend over $600 when you can do it for under $50? All you need is a couple 1-1/2" PVC pipes, a small wooden board, small winch and tow rope, a few stainless steel bolts, small pulley, and a carabiner. Use your existing tie-down straps as the bridle and you're able to easily car-top your kayak in just minutes.
For those looking to build a similar system, here are a few close-up photos that may help -
www.starpathim...
I just used the Yakima Skyline Towers, the 60" steel areostyle crossbars, and repurposed the sidebar rails from an old Yakima Showboat system. But you can find generic sidebars/bar clamps online, just look for ones with low profile clamps. If you don't have any side rails, that is probably the crux of acquiring the hardware for the build.
I bought mine from RackWarehouse but I know Amazon and other retailers carry them.
www.rackwareho...
Yakima Skyline Towers (4 pack), part number - y0148
Yakima Landing Pad 13, 4 Pack - y0239
Yakima CoreBar M 60" Bars - y0422
Here is a pic of the sidebar rails and clamps - www.starpathim...
The white part is just some PVC pipe I slipped over the rail before I clamped it down to act as a roller. It's not really needed but I think it helps a bit.

Very slick! Good video and well presented. Great job. It would be difficult if not impossible to explain why there are those who would offer a thumbs down. It’s creative, cost effective, clever and simple. In fact far more clever but certainly not as simple as the ‘thumbs-down’ folks. And that may be the explanation.

I tried your idea without winching . Once the kayak is between both pvcs it’s easy to slide it all the way onto the racks.. I just acquired a 18 Necky fiberglass kayak and it easily slid to the roof rack

I put a blanket, on my car roof,,,,,then I use my folding, 20 foot gorilla ladder,,,it folds to 5 feet,,,and lean it on the side edge of my car roof,,lay the canoe, hull, up,,and parallel to the car,,,,90 degrees, to the ladder,,,extended 20 feet,,,the angle is super easy to slide the canoe up,,,,and I straddle the ladder, and "walk",, my 16 foot Grumman's, aluminum,,,or 15 foot Coleman canoe,,,,each, about 75 lbs,,,,to waist level,,then get to the side, of the ladder, and slide to the top of may car,,,,then fold up the ladder,,,secure my canoe,,,with 4 foam, walmart blocks, for canoes,,,,and tie the bow, and transom, with rope to the frame,,,and use surfboard, soft racks,,for tie down, thru the windows,,,midcanoe,,,easy,,,simple,,,and just reverse the processs,to unload,,,,,,not as mechanical, as your tecnique,,, but absolutely gets the job, done,,,much easier, than lifting it,,,old school,,,less scratches, too,,,guys come up to me,,,,same way,,,,,hate back spasms,,,and I use tons of gear,,,,trolling motors,,,sonar,,,rod holders etcc,,, so this lightens, and one manifies, the roof unloading trip,,,16, and 20 foot, gorilla ladders, are about 100 bucks,,,but most guys, already have one,,,,,great vid,,,,😎

Best idea ever for that i would use 4 pcs of pipe,2 smaller diameter ones go inside the 2 larger ones , 6 inches, drill holes at the junction, and use a pin or a 6mm bolt thru; then disassemble,easy to store in car edit; i have 2 small pcs of bar steel, 3/4 by 1/8th with a 6 mm hole , protruding from under the hood, on each side, to tie the nose of the boat down,i like to look at the 2 ropes while i drive no,i did not drill thru the hood, i removed one nut from the hinge,underneath, on each side,bolted the small appendix steel bar to it, comes up thru the gap,the hood closes without touching it, painted the color of the car, still everybody asks what is that,and of course they ask me to open the hood to see

Brilliant, Alan! I hope that sends a message to Thule and their $900 msrp Hullavators, which, BTW, is not one size fits all. Its advantages depend greatly on roof rack/vehicle height, kayak dimensions, user height and strength, and possibly knee condition. Love your can-do result! Would love to see a close-up of the PVC ends and how they hook into your rack. Thanks again!

Fantastic idea... I am 62 years old with back and shoulder problems and was just looking at ways to get my 12 foot Sportspal canoe onto my roof rack by myself. I actually thought of the same DIY set up but without the winch as I do not think I will need it. The rails should allow me to just slide the canoe up and onto the roof rack without any back lifting involved...same thing in reverse to take it off. I was thinking ABS for the rails however I like the idea of your PVC better as it can more easily be heated to mold the ends to securely attach the the roof rack ends. Bravo! and enjoy the $ 600.00 saved!!!

and just to kick the whole thing up a notch i may build it with a $70 electric winch from harbor freight. I have to get my Hobie Outback to the roof of my Ford F150/camper shell. Do you take the winch off when not in use to protect it from the weather?
@AlanHowellphotovideo
@AlanHowellphotovideo 3 года назад
I usually take it off if I'm not paddling that week, or if I'm parked in an area that it might get stolen. I was going to go with the electric winch system but when I tested the small manual winch it was plenty fast. I also was going to use a drill with the manual winch but by the time I could get the drill out of the car and get it attached, I could have the boat lowered on the ground anyway. So, for me at least, simple was the path.

A lifelong paddler, I haven't had too much of a problem loading and unloading kayaks or canoes until recently when got a pedal kayak which is just too heavy and cumbersome to realistically (safely) get up there on a regular basis. @AlanHowellphotovideo
@AlanHowellphotovideo 4 года назад
It will just depend on how wide/thick your roof rack crossbars are but I just used schedule 40, 1-1/2" inner diameter PVC for mine. My kayak weighs about 68 lbs. and barely bends the pipes at all.

Hi Allan, this is ingenious! Just found a winch on CL for $15. 1 1/2” seems beefy but no deflection. What length are your rails? I have a Honda Pilot so likely a bit higher than your car. Thinking 10’ would do the job. Thanks again for sharing this invention
@AlanHowellphotovideo
@AlanHowellphotovideo Год назад
I think mine were just under 8' but you really have lots of leeway in how long you make them. The longer they are the less the winch has to work, and perhaps adds a bit more of a safety margin, but the shorter they are, the easier they will stow and you can even use them inside a regular parking space or two without taking up another parking space in a crowded lot. 10' seems reasonable but I would experiement and start off long then adjust down to your preferred length. I will add that keeping them a little short where they hover about 2-3" off the ground really helps with uneven parking spots. Once you put the boat on they will touch the ground anyway.

That's pretty ingenius. And I appreciate it. For me, with a bad back, but not too bad, I use something a little simpler. 1. Back Subaru to the canoe. 2. Flipe the canoe upside down. 3. Pick up one end of he canoe, not the entire canoe---and sit that one end onto the racks. 4. Go to the back of the canoe, pick up THAT end and slide it on. I never lift the entire canoe, just one end at a time. But your concept and execution is the bomb, I admit.

Thank you very much for this. I have just finished making my rig and indeed it does work. There is a lot of load on the winch board so that has to be well secured and you need to ensure the design doesnt mean the winch handle fouls the roof rack. The securing point on the kayak is also important, especially at the bend at the top of the pipe, but the end result is having a back that still works for a change. The plastic pipes amazingly are fine with the strain and it is so easy to rig and de-rig. Great idea!
@AlanHowellphotovideo
@AlanHowellphotovideo 4 года назад
That's awesome! Well done Hugh! I found the build fun to create and it sure does help my back in the long run. Takes a litle longer to load and unload but it's well worth saving the back and shoulders. @@AlanHowellphotovideo I have been skirting round this idea but was thinking always of needing to use wood so your idea of pipe was the clincher. I used 40mm waste pipe and solvent welded a 135 degree bend and then a short bit of pipe to fit into the roof bars. I have friend who has been struggling loading his canoe and he is going to love this too. Being an engineer (or was anyway) I am still thinking up refinements so this will keep me amused for sometime yet. Thanks again and thanks for sharing.

@@hughprice1533 , That's great news and would be interested in any refinements you come up with. I had looked at securing the winch board with U bolts and painting it white to match the car but paddling season came about sooner than expected lol. After sticking with the bit of tow rope to secure the winch board I realized it actually kept from scratching up the crossbars and was still pretty easy to take off and on. However, I just leave it on the roof rack most of the time now since I paddle fairly often.
@hughprice1533
@hughprice1533 4 года назад
@@AlanHowellphotovideo Yep been there with the u bolts and like you gave it up. I noticed your lashing and decided if it worked for you it would certainly work for me. Being aged as well and as our paddling season has started here in the UK I set off for the first paddle and ricked my back. It was either find a different way of loading cheaply (paying money for these things hurts my finer feelings) or give up paddling. Thanks to you I have got the right option. The only real issue is the small section when the kayak comes off the tube and rotates onto the bars and I think the lead is all importnat there. I am using a sling at present so will experiment again tomorrow. The monsoon returns here for wednesday onwards but we need it. I will keep you posted!

I made two verticals similar to yours only I added a perpendicular piece to each vertical about waist high that sticks out 15”. I find it pretty easy to lift the boat waist high to the perpendicular’s and sit it there. Now I can lift with my legs and push the kayak onto my roof racks pretty easily. I use Yakima kayak holders. I use a marine grade bungee loop drilled through the top of each vertical to secure them to the Yakima holders.

Right below the horizontal “H” bar I added another pvc T in the vertical leg with a 12” pvc glued into it. This 15” part sticks out and creates the place on each leg where you sit the kayak. All the legs are 1 1/2” pvc. I drilled hole’s through the top of each vertical leg and added marine grade bungee and that loops over my roof rack bars to hold the whole thing steady while loading the kayak. After winter is over I may get everything out and make a short video. This thing comes apart easily and fits in the back of the car for transport. Somehow I missed it. What is the function of the side rails. Couldn't you just attach the winch to the primary cross bars?
@AlanHowellphotovideo
@AlanHowellphotovideo 5 месяцев назад
Certainly. It would still get the boat up on the car without the side rails. Although, you're more likely to scratch the paint on the car when it goes over the top as the boat tends to rock at that position without the rail. Also, the other rail enables bracing of the winch system. But it's totally possible to not use a winch and get the boat on the car.

The end caps on the Outback they look oval how did you get the PVC PIPE shaped to go Match it when you press it on them ? Can you show a close up shot / video of the PVC pipe they look oval when laying on the ground. Thanks in Advance and great system you put together....
@AlanHowellphotovideo
@AlanHowellphotovideo 4 года назад
Hi Frasier, I just used a heat gun to melt the PVC to the oval bar shape. All you have to do is start heating the end of the PVC and once it starts getting soft you can push it onto the bar and it will take that shape. As soon as it's the right shape just let it cool and it will harden back to the shape you want.

Hi Alan, great concept, I going to try making this as I'm starting to struggle with loading my watercraft (10' SOT Kayak, 14' Sportspal sq stern canoe and a 17' aluminum freighter canoe). How long are the beams before you heat bent and heat fitted them to the roof rack shape? I'm guessing that with the use of the winch the sharpness of the angle to the ground is not an issue. Good idea too, to keep the beams off the ground (:. Your solution should help me get another 10+ years of fishing regardless of which watercraft I want to take. So many beautiful small lakes where I am, most need a 4x4 to get into them so trailers are a no go. I live near the Manitoba/Ontario border about 1.5 hours from Lake of the Woods and some really amazing backcountry. Where the Prairies and Canadian Shield meet. Cheers ! Steve (65 yrs)

Hi Steven, on the rails, I think it just depends on how tall your vehicle is, and how you want to store them. I tried to keep it at an angle where if I was parked in a marina parking lot, I wouldn't take up too much room for other vehicles...or at least for very long. I also store the rails inside the Subaru but if I have a passenger I strap them to the roof rack and they ride fine as long as they are secured with straps properly. But, for my setup, I think the rails are 7.5' feet total length, and about 6" from the bend...but that was simply made to fit my particular roof rack crossbars. However, I will say the 6" length seems to be a good balance of strength and ability to get off and on the bars easily. I think if you practice with the heat gun and the PVC you'll get the hang of it very quickly to match your crossbar size. That's a great area you are in. I've fished up on Lake Salvesen (Ontario) and bit and near Lake of the Woods....amazing fishery! Good luck with your build and I hope it greatly extends your time on the water.

Hello. I also have an outback like yours. My crossbars are different than yours. I have just the factory crossbars but it seems like you have another set up. Was that something you purchased? And would you be able to tell me what brand it is or what it is called? Thank you.
@AlanHowellphotovideo

I bought mine from RackWarehouse but I know Amazon and other retailers carry them. www.rackwarehouse.com/yakima-8000148-streamline-series-skyline-towers.html Yakima Skyline Towers (4 pack), part number - y0148 Yakima Landing Pad 13, 4 Pack - y0239 Yakima CoreBar M 60" Bars - y0422 Here is a pic of the sidebar rails and clamps - www.starpathimages.com/SPI-Archives-ClientGalleries/SPI-PhotoArchives/Kayak-Loader/i-WCZmcwS/A The white part is just some PVC pipe I slipped over the rail before I clamped it down to act as a roller. It's not really needed but I think it helps a bit.

Thanks again for this amazing video. Is there a reason to use the pulley vs just the boat wench that is positioned in the middle of the 2x4 and facing the kayak? Thanks!
@AlanHowellphotovideo
@AlanHowellphotovideo 2 года назад
Yes, the pulley takes a lot of load off of the winch so when you are lowering the boat back down it doesn't start to spin too fast, or make it too hard to crank up manually, otherwise it can make it too hard to hold on to the crank arm. It also gives you extra room to add another boat if needed. I found it pretty important to have the pully centered where it directs the pulling force directly to the center of the boat. If its not centered it will cause the boat to tip off one of the rails. Hope this helps! :-)

Very cool! i'd pay you to build one for me but I don't see where you offered that service :) So, the bend in your PVC doesn't look like an elbow or 90 degree fitting. I know you melted the ends to go over the rack ends. How is the bend in the PVC created? Thanks!
@AlanHowellphotovideo
@AlanHowellphotovideo 4 года назад
I just used a heat gun and once it started getting a little malleable, I took a small block of wood and flattened the end slightly to start matching the shape of the oval crossbars on the roof rack. I made sure not to burn the PVC by checking to make sure it wasn't turning brown too much. Once I could slide the PVC on the bar I simply let the weight of the PVC slowly bend the pipe until it reached about 2-3" off the ground. I made sure that each PVC pipe had the same bend angle and fit properly so I could use either pipe on either crossbar. They are virtually identical doing them in this fashion.
@danaroman4694
@danaroman4694 3 года назад
Can you share how long the PVC pipe is that you had on the side? Also how do you secure the kayak? Do you have straps around it and then cinch? Lastly do you have instructions how you put the pulley on the board. Thanks!!!!
@AlanHowellphotovideo
@AlanHowellphotovideo 3 года назад
Hi Dana. The PVC rail length just depends on how tall your vehicle is, but I allow a few inches of gap between the ground and the end of the tubes. This way, if the ground you are parked on is a little uneven, the rails will self adjust once you put the boat on it. For securing, I just use the regular tie-down straps. I don't use ratcheting types though as they can damage the hull if cranked too tight. Remember to secure the ends of the tie-down straps so they are not flapping in the wind and get frayed. For the pulley, I just used the tow rope section that I cut off the winch to reduce the amount of rope on the winch. I have some pics in the video description that should show how I just basically lashed the pulley to the wooden winch board. Hope this helps, and good luck on your build!

Something like this would probably work, although you would have to replace the cable with a tow rope to keep from scratching the top of the vehicle. www.amazon.com/Portable-Remote-Control-Vehicle-Recovery/dp/B001OBN03I/ref=pd_sbs_263_6/130-0558299-3544501?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B001OBN03I&pd_rd_r=6a935e13-cfaa-4169-bb2a-c512e8f9875d&pd_rd_w=vsbaZ&pd_rd_wg=YX7MC&pf_rd_p=d9804894-61b7-40b3-ba58-197116cffd9d&pf_rd_r=HJS9VNEPK3GP3T6B5N4Z&psc=1&refRID=HJS9VNEPK3GP3T6B5N4Z Personally, I would just use a manual winch and you can take the handle off and use a drill to crank the winch automatically. I've done that with mine with a cordless drill and it works well. You just have to use a drill that has enough power, and on a medium to low speed.
@flt528
@flt528 2 года назад
This is excellent, but I would argue that the vast majority of us won't need a winch at all - just get under the kayak and shove it up the pipes to the top of the car - you'll be using the combined strength of both arms and both legs so it shouldn't be a problem unless you've got serious back problems (in which case how can you paddle a kayak?).
@AlanHowellphotovideo
@AlanHowellphotovideo 2 года назад
Lifting is a compressive action on the spine. Paddling is lateral motion so it can actually help by building core strength. It certainly has for me. It does depend on the type of injury though. I have ruptured discs.

Great video! Thank you! You're a very handy problem-solver! So,... I'm brand new to kayaking. Yikes! I'm currently looking for a kayak to buy, which is no small feat, it seems. I'm hoping to find something secondhand, simply because this isn't a sport I'm accustomed to. I also hope to find one that is lightweight enough for my short 5'2" frame and my 57 year old body (I suffer from a condition with daily chronic pain). The sit-on seems to hold appeal; likely that stems from not wanting to get stuck in the "cockpit"! Any ideas? Do you have any suggestions of brands and options that might help me narrow down my search? At this point, I'm not sure what I'm looking at (for example, sea kayak vs. what???). What should a newbie like me be looking for? The kayak that you demonstrated with in this video looks very safe, wide, and comfortable, with enough room for two people, if I'm not mistaken. What brand is it, please? My intention is to use the kayak in a calm lake located within our town, and also along the shoreline of the Northumberland Straight (salt water) where our cottage is located. Any suggestion would be very helpful! What is your opinion of the brand Prijon? Many thanks! 😊 Linda
@AlanHowellphotovideo
@AlanHowellphotovideo 2 года назад
If you're looking to do mostly lake and sea touring, I would go with at least a 12' kayak, and 14' is even better. Mine is a Viking brand and I really love it. Ocean Kayak and Perception have been around a long time as well and perform well on the ocean. I defintely recommend the sit-on-top style, especially for the ocean as it's a just easier once you get in shallower water if you need to walk over some thin spots. Haven't tried the Prijon brand so unfortunately I can answer that one. The best advice I can give is try a few out first as they may surprise you in how they perform and the comfort level can be pretty specific. For ocean touring, you want one that is longer and not too wide so you can push through the wind better and cover more water faster in currents. Hope this helps! :-)

Congrats on the new boat! That's a beast for sure by yourself. I may put together a short clip of the winch board as several people have asked for some specifics. It's pretty easy to figure out but making sure the tow rope is centered over the roof rack and to the center of gravity of the kayak is really the main part to work out. I also use some rubberized straps to hold the PVC rails to the roof rack as well if I'm traveling with a partner or a ton of gear. They need to be snugged down pretty good since the PVC is slick. Good luck on the build and thanks for the comment!
