This is what a thoroughly fried inverter looks like inside. Is it fixable? Is it worth repairing? Let's find out.

This might be a little off topic. But I'm thinking you might be able to help me out. I have 1/2 a Kw of solar on my camper a 2000W pure sine wave inverter. I want to get a 2000w inverter generator & parallel them to start my Rv A/C then drop off my solar once running and let my 2K generator run the A/C unit by itself. Does it matter if they are out of phase ? And if so how do they get the Honda generators running in parallel to be in phase ? I just wanted to hear some input from someone with way more knowledge than I have. Thank you in advance. Joe

You should try to fix the 2nd half! Sure it looks burnt good but nothing out of your capability to fix.

I have noticed MOSFETs come with a "static" charge warning that they are supposedly sensitive to ambient electrical discharge, but in my experience none have ever had any trouble being handled like normal transistors. What is your take on this "warning" knurlgnar? I have built many homemade MOSFET modified sinwave inverters and never had any issue with them in this regard.

You might want to check again with that burnt circuit board take all the components off the burnt circuit board and rebuild it with a clean circuit board?

6000W off 12V is insane. The cabling you would need for 500A. Ouch. Even at 3000W it is still too much. 48V is better
@knurlgnar24
@knurlgnar24 2 года назад
That is somewhat true, but for chassis wiring standards are looser and it is indeed easily possible to get 6kw from 12V with welding cable for 10's of minutes. Such an application shouldn't be considered for permanent use but for occasional use I don't see a problem with it as long as fire risk is considered. e.g. a 12AWG wire will handle 40A all day long while hardly getting warm which is double usual amperage ratings under ordinary rating conditions.

Hi sir I have a question for you I would like to hook up 2000 watt inverter to my diesel car it runs on free fuel. I was wondering how many batteries that I might need and any other info but you could provide I want to run 10000 BTU 110 air conditioner thanks for any info
@knurlgnar24
@knurlgnar24 10 лет назад
A complicated question overall, however the concise answer is that your diesel car cannot power your AC unit. You would need to modify it to accomodate a 250A or so alternator (like a high output version of a semi truck alternator) and bump up the idle speed. That said I do like the idea!

I have an 8k watt that looks just like your 6k It is not working but not as bad as your unit I think the module board that plugsin is bad or over heated. I want to change to Full Wave with EGS002. is that possible?
@knurlgnar24
@knurlgnar24 3 года назад
All things are possible with enough knowledge, stubborn persistence, resources, and time. Is it worth it? No, not unless the journey is your goal. If that is your goal then great! If not you're better off purchasing a product engineered from the ground up to be a pure sine inverter.
@signalspy
@signalspy 3 месяца назад
just bought one used. nothing is burned up inside.. Won't even power on. Any ideas?
@knurlgnar24
@knurlgnar24 3 месяца назад
It's usually one or more of the FETs (transistors that bolt to the heatsinks). Take an ohm meter and check for zero resistance across the gate and drain/source pins. If all three leads of the FET read near zero ohms it's bad. Replace with similar/same spec'd part. Fixed. It's obviously not that simple but that's the general idea. Probably 50% of these can be fixed that way without any specific additional knowledge. This one did not work out that way unfortunately. These are very good inverters in my opinion.
@mikep95133
@mikep95133 10 лет назад
That one was blown up good! I'm glad you liked the construction. I've picked up 6 in two auctions and am going through them now. Sometimes the grid tied units won't sync. Not enough experience to know if they need more debug or if they are cheap and just don't sync easily. These larger units are quite amazing. Pure sine are more complex. I noticed the Go Power's have significant heat sinking. I've been thinking of making a fet tester for impedance matching new fets or maybe even for testing the working ones by removing them first. An in circuit fet tester? Hmmm. Thanks for the inspiration K!

He has said it is hobby, so that would mean it costs him about as much as many others, with electronics involved. Now that you mentioned it, he could probably get a biz license and declare it as a write-off for a number of years... rc

I was just laughing my ass off. I've never done work with electronics of this power, and then how you plainly with barely any emotion to it said "a thoroughly fried inverter". Well good luck salvaging and/or repairing. I hope I never and up seeing that with anything I make, but I guess that's what "R&D" is for.

I have this exact inverter, and the top is blown but the bottom is fine. You stated that you wanted to remove a few of the green resistors. How many did you remove? And what would happen if I didn't remove them?

If the DC/DC boost section works, just hook it up to the DC bus of a cheap (surplus) VFD and get a really nice sine wave inverter with V/Hz control.

@@knurlgnar24 the one we get here in India from very reputed brand for 2KW that come for 150 USD with big isolation transformer, all kind of protection, weigh around 20 kg, inbuilt PWM battery charger and comes with an on-site 2 year warranty. So this 6KW in such Form factor is intriguing to me. I think, it is SMPS based inverter (so the small transformers instead of big isolation transformer).

My inverter have 2 + 2- coming out of it . I have 1+ 1- hooked up to bat . should I have 2+ 2 - hooked up to my bat ? If yes how should I hook up the other +- to a different bat or the same one ?
@knurlgnar24
@knurlgnar24 9 лет назад
They should both be connected to the same battery source. Sometimes it is important to do so and sometimes not depending on the construction of your particular inverter.

+terrance leacock It was in the title..? Why did you click on it?!? (Like, seriously....why?) It was, actually, pretty informative as far as seeing the parts, the failures, and why they typically fail...Not just some un-narrated/uninformative video of a blown inverter like you lead-on to be so in your comment... These types of comments baffle me... Carry on, knurlgnar! PS: I couldn't help but check (I'm proven correct, though, yet again)...but all of you people who leave vague, negative comments never have any content of you own (terrance leacock)...why is that? Critiquing someone on a video when you don't even have any of your own...now that's pointless. Just saying. Have a great day, be productive and kind to others.

Russ Graham Is this for occasional temporary use (a couple times a year) or frequent use? What is the power source - solar, vehicle alternator, etc? If the application is a simple low cost solution for emergency power once or twice a year when power goes out then you can get by with something pretty inexpensive. e.g. check out this eBay auction number: 321608763968 (not associated with me in any way) This is a pretty good inverter for the price. Most of them will do around 1700W continuous with good surge capability. It's actually more capable than many of the crappy 3kw models on the market.
