The diodes are switched into circuit at end of travel to block current and stop motor. The same diode will then pass current when the applied voltage to the motor is reversed and the other diode will stop it at end of travel. If they weren't there the motor would run to end of travel, the micro switch would open one leg to the motor and that would be it. No matter which way you applied current, the motor would never run again.
