Inside a poundland £5 sealed LED 10W floodlight.

Poundland sell some pretty interesting LED products. This £5 10W LED floodlight is actually well made inside. It's a sealed fixture which means it's fully waterproof unless moisture permeates in via the cable. The downside of it being sealed is that it's hard to open without damaging the case or glass, and that rules out its repurposing as a project case or repairing it.

If you unbraiding a bike brake Bowden cable inner you get many strands of very tough wire. A small ring or toggle on each end allows you to pull it like a cheese cutter through the sealant with relatively little force and gives a nice clean cut. If you find it difficult then a gentle sawing action can help. This is my go to method for opening sealed units. Effective for opening vehicle headlights to clean and polish the lens and remove any condensation.

@redoverdrivetheunstoppable4637
all agreeble... it's anyways shameful that this particular "ability" of devices is still overlooked (if not gotten worse), this "trend" of forbidding zero-cost-repairs on whatever is not ending, people become more likely to open things and repair em themselves.... an iconic brand? apple?... device? printers?.. my old FIAT car had a throttle body that costed 700€, it was LITERALY half of the fuel injection, the problem? a stupid potentiometer that could cost 10€... and they don't even make those stuff to last, those leds are rated for 20k hours but a bonding wire may get loose in a week, who knows?... i still have the SCHEMATICS of my old Mivar TVs, there was the schematic in the box, my new car comes with just how to adjust the clock, old OWNER manuals had schematic, fluids type and amounts and even torque data for engine bolts, only exploded views were missing

I freely admit to not being the worlds most dynamic of individuals, so am not the best person to pursue this, but in a world where we are bombarded with information regarding recycling, re-usability and reducing waste, isn't it time we started calling out those companies that are producing products that are (unnecessarily) single use only? You've pointed out a few on your channel, but there are loads. My personal hobbyhorse is molded plugs. A cable gets damaged and a perfectly good plug is no longer usable: in this day and age it's utterly ridiculous! It would be great if those who have a platform from witch to speak started raising awareness of this ever increasing problem.

One might argue that the glass as is glued is great for preventing water ingress. I would beg to differ. As the unit heats up (either use or sunlight and the greenhouse effect) it will expand the air inside which will escape through the cable entrance or the cable itself. When it cools it will create a vacuum inside thus drawing air back in. The air will contain moisture, and over time result In condensation. Is the case metal? What is the current draw? Are they being honest with their wattage claims? I agree with others that a well placed heat gun might prize off the glass.

it may be (and quite likely is) the usual silicon stuff that coachbuilders use to glue windshields and back glasses on cars, that black thing must be cut with some bicycle brake wire lookalike thing with two handles, that's thin, it may be made with that wire by leaving only like 3 threads, you usually swear to "ease" the process as i saw... then there's the cartdrige new thing for placing it... but on cars it's like 5mm thick, also for adjustment i suppose

You may be able to answer a question for me please Clive. I've just swapped halogen light fittings on a portable lighting tower, for these LED floodlights. There's a slight strobe effect when used on a generator. I'm assuming it's dimmimg and flickering due to dimming between the AC cycles from the alternator. No issues connected to the mains, they are in fact very steady and bright. Is there any way of smoothing out the supply to stop this?? Any help would be appreciated.... :)

Never been a big fan of those lights that use linear current regulation circuitry. One of the advantages of LED is power efficiency but with linear regulation you're throwing away a lot of that as heat in the regulation chip. I can see why the manufacturers are doing it: cost and simplicity. But really, a well designed switching regulator driver circuit is always preferable from an efficiency point of view, although it may cost more to build.

Hard to tell way across the Internet but that silicone type material looks an awful lot like urethane, as used in mounting car windows.

Obviously you need to use the X-ray wand to open it...

I used to always get poundland and poundworld mixed up.

As poundworld are dead in the water that wont be a problem for much longer.

should be decent from an RFI point of view, too.

Can anyone help me with a question I've got por favor,? Im getting into soldering and I've ordered some micro usb connectors on pcb, can i use these to power some, or most of those cheap little soldering practice kits on eBay? Or rather, would there be any issue using a phone charger to power them? I haven't seen anyone else do it in my research and figured it'd be a super easy way for me in my situation to do it, rather than use all different batteries and battery compartments.

If the kit runs on 5v it'd be OK, if it's designed for 3 or 4 cells then that's a 4.5 to 6 volt battery when full and would probably be fine. Micro USB is a bit fiddly to solder, you might want to remove the data pins on the back of the socket to give more space between the power pins.

Okay thanks bud that's kinda what i figured, and the milliamps from a phone charger shouldn't effect the kits, would it?

How are Poundland electrical products consistently good? Do they have a knowledgeable buyer? Are they making a special effort or is it luck?

They seem to have someone technically minded choosing their products.

ArgH! So annoying! I just bought a quite decent but super cheap 30W RGB LED floodlight like this, and it just occurred to me that it should be almost trivial to add an ESP8266 Wifi chip to it, and maybe even DMX. But it is sealed just like this one. Any new tricks on how to soften the glue? Would a heat gun work on silicone sealant?

The silicone is very hard to remove.

All glue is hotmelt, eventually.

I bought a similar light from Home Depot (for substantially more than £5), it broke after 18 months and ended up in the trash.

*Thanks Clive that's a nice light there well designed, i may get one and heat it up and see if it's ok that way*

i feel like you might have more luck heating it up to losen the tar kinda like what we must do with newer smart phones
