This week we visit a really special home in Bukit Batok West. Homeowners YaYa and Jun Yao have really transformed this 1,490 square feet 5-room resale HDB into a unique home + studio arrangement.
From the custom made metal gate at the entrance, it sets the tone for the distinctive details of the home. They customised the kitchen to make it smaller, but what’s really interesting is that as the windows were originally outside the balcony, they removed it all to create a really serene balcony. As such, the balcony is like an extension, but separated with foldable glass panels that allow them to open up the entire space.
The size of the home also allowed them to create a separate studio space, that is accessible from the balcony - which is almost like coming out of your home and into your office/studio space. The studio itself features a custom light from Taiwan, and display cabinets to showcase materials.

One of the best interior designs featured here that gives Singaporeans a different perspective. It is not a painstaking recreation of a certain "look" that is on trend at the moment. It is not minimalistic / industrial / japandi / mid-century modern or whatever genres you have out there. You'd be hard-pressed to find specific tropes and trends that oh-so-many owners have adopted in this apartment. What you will see is an expression + exploration of different textures and materials while leaving the rest of the design to age along with the inhabitants of the space. This is the aesthetic of living.

this is what good design is - designed around needs and behaviours, not lookbooks and pinterest boards. the attention and respect to materials is something not commonly seen in local designers - with a clear preference (and budget) for laminates, for example. But here, you don't get that sense that you choose a material for something that was designed, but it's part of the design. Which is what I admire.

For a moment, i thought this was an apartment in Taipei and not Singapore Particularly love the open concept balcony space that act as an walk way into the workstation/studio . this sort of concept is less commonly seen in SG and I love to meet home owner whom share same bold ideas of doing something out of the ordinary and not follow trends

Wow, I especially love that the entrance to their work studio is outside of their main living space. The walk out of their living room, through the outdoor balcony would really make it feel separate to their home. Brilliant concept.

Astonishing design, I think by far one of the most unique HDB design that is worthy a like and share. Really intriguing is the balcony, they really went out of the box to design it to remove the windows! But I think the View would have even been more perfect if it's facing a forest or something! It's a really big place even with all the design and also acceptable if you have a family, lets say if you have kids, its also okay, because you still have 2 rooms, one master and one common bedroom.

I literally watch it 2 times so i could capture the details i may hv missed out earlier 🤭 I love the concept and how the owners curated their profession and lifestyle into their home. Livng in HDB is never easy to incorporate a touch of nature, but the owners manage to cleverly do so. You might have seen these type of glass doors in shopping mall stores, especially if the store is closed. When the store is open, they are moved and stacked in a corner, usually hidden by a partition.

When pple’re willing to buy Hdb at high end prices plus renovate extensively, they'ld also hope to sell at a million or more, soaring up flat prices even the hdb direct sale flat. Congratulations Singaporeans, u gotta work tripple harder just to get a decent place to live, not considering yet having to work like a cow for the rest of ur 30 years loan repayment period, or till Drop Dead☠️, whichever is earlier. Our prime minister's wife answering queries to New Height direct sale price, said: just take it as paying rental for the rest of ur life that's all. Though Land belongs to the pple, but are sold at Astronomical prices. The word 'minimizing profit' is not in their dictionary.

Ea size is 142+ this is 130+square older resale flat 5 room flat and is not that common also. Most 5 room are 120m square for that era. Now BTO 5 room flats are all 110m square.

Honestly, was never about perspective but more on how much money you dont mind spending on your home. If you are working a high paying job and would love the house of your dream, then go ahead, spend all that money on crazy renovation concepts.

Curious on the windows that were removed. 1 section of it is a balcony which I believed can be taken down. The other section is also a balcony? If not then how do you get the permit to take it down?

Just go to old blocks that has 5rooms in middle units and 4 rooms in the middle units. Those 4rooms in middle has corridor for people to pass to get to the lift or to downstairs. You will see the same thing. The only difference is the main door wall is not extended out.

Understanding how HDB units work in SG, I am curious how it managed rain water discharge coming in the new balcony. I don't think the the drain will go down one level since there would be a unit below.
