As the US-China relations continue to deteriorate, the issue of Taiwan just keeps popping up, but let’s be honest - most of us have no idea what's going on in Taiwan or what Taiwanese people are thinking. So our team was finally able to hit the streets of Taipei to ask ordinary Taiwanese people what they think of China. We do not have any political affiliations and are neither left or right. The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Taiwanese population.

Maybe while Biden is president, but most Americans I know of are very supportive of Taiwan as a free nation separate from China. The U.S. hasn't got a history of abandoning allies. But Afghans were not particularly benefitting the U.S., either. Taiwan has other supporters, too, including Japan, which is also a strong U.S. ally. The man who said that was a CCP influenced stooge. Maybe you are too?
@Insecurity119

@@deaddocreallydeaddoc5244 Ignoring your clear partisan bias - you seem to have glossed over what other things the "CCP influenced stooge" said. For example, he said that countries will prioritize their self-interests above all else. The US understands how significant Taiwan is towards containing China's power projection and maritime claims - the US wants to remain the dominant military power not only in the region, but the world. Japan was literally occupied and had its society reformed by the US after its surrender, so it's in their best interest to stay on the US's good side. Post WW2 relations between China and Japan aren't exactly good, even though the younger generation holds less animosity towards each other. Japan has the diplomatic backing of the US to deter Chinese aggression, which is Japan looking out for its self-interest. See a trend? Anyway, feel free to reply with whatever you want, but no - I'm not a CCP shill. If it matters, my family is from Hong Kong but your US-centric worldview (and politically motivated) expressed in your comment goes against the goal of Asian Boss. The point of this channel is to give you a glimpse of perspectives and viewpoints in Asian countries, and the comment you leave is about pushing a pro-Republican/nationalistic narrative while labeling perspectives you disagree with as "CCP influenced".

My parents immigrated from Taiwan and I was born in the US. I feel like the general consensus here is that most Americans will SAY they support Taiwan if they're asked about it- but it's not because they understand the Taiwan/China relationship, it's because they're against the Chinese Communist Party. If Taiwan and China started a war today, I don't believe the US government would commit and provide the support that many local Taiwanese people might expect from this side of the world. Personally I don't have a strong preference on green or blue, but most of my family lives in Taiwan so I do really hope for peace.

People’s thinking is heavily influenced by many factors. Brainwashing is not only achieved through explicit government propaganda. In Taiwan it’s done through many years of subtle manipulation of education system and media undertone, and in many ways it’s way more effective than explicit propaganda, because it brainwashed you without making you realize you are brainwashed. This is how a manufactured identity is achieved.

So true. His description of how the US will only look out for Taiwan as long as Taiwan benefits the US is so spot-on. And he does not blame the US for that - he specifically calls out how it is natural for each country to act in its own interest. What he does not speak about (but I'm sure he knows all about) is how the Taiwanese government has pursued an intentional decades-long strategy of *ensuring* that Taiwan remains a benefit to the US, and to the world. This of course is its development of the semiconductor industry. In recent years this strategy has paid dividends, but it was not accidental: smart people planned it this way. Taiwan will not go the way of the Kurds or the Afghanis, and the reason, somewhat amazingly, is semiconductors.
@IronKurone

@@IronKurone Your understanding is too narrow, semiconductors are not that important, China never unified Taiwan because of semiconductor technology. Taiwanese companies rely entirely on Equipment from Europe and the United States, and TSMC cannot make chips if the United States embargoes Taiwan. Smic would have mass-produced 5nm without the US blocking amSL. China is now testing 28nm domestic equipment, I know this year's domestic equipment has not passed the national acceptance, I expect that by 2025 at most, China will have a 28nm production line that has been mass produced. The timing of reunification depends on China's supply chain dependence on Europe and the United States. The most dependent is semiconductor, and there are too many Chinese engineers in the semiconductor industry

Based on this small sample, we can see that Taiwanese people in general: - Have a clear opinion about this topic and feel free to speak their minds. - Think Taiwanese media are biased toward independence. - Have different points of view about their nationality and relation with China. - There are generational gaps on this topic; most young people consider Taiwan is an independent country. - Even if they see Taiwan as a de facto independent country, still prefer to keep the status quo instead of risk a war. - Don't think a Chinese military invasion is imminent, especially because its huge cost. - Feel moral support from countries like the US, Japan, etc, but are not sure about actual help in case of war. - NOBODY wants war.

@tristalacour2492
@tristalacour2492 2 года назад
It’s NOT complicated!!! The island of Taiwan was ceded to Imperial Japan by the Qing dynasty after the 1st Sino-Japanese War. After WWII, Japan relinquished its control over the island of Taiwan, repatriated most of the Japanese people that inhabited the island, and returned the island to China: 1 country 2 systems is how it has existed until now. Reunification was always the goal of the both the Nationalist and the Communists before the Communists fully gained control mid century and established the PRC. Mao Zedong claimed the island as belonging to the PRC. Deng Xiaoping repatriated Hong Kong from British Control and tried to peacefully repatriate Taiwan. Preeminent Leader Xi and the politburo standing committee are now adamant that the island be brought under control of Beijing. My proposal is that the U.S. and Japan unilaterally grant citizenship to the 25 million, mostly Han Chinese, living on the island and have the UN openly declare the island as belonging to the PRC. It’s the only way to preserve liberty for the Taiwanese people AND ensuring that international justice be served.

I don't say this to demean the US, I'm American myself, but once you start to look at international politics in terms of power it makes much more sense, doing the right thing is sometimes just a side-effect. Their are countries who do horrible things in peace time, but it doesn't compare to the amount of suffering that war causes. Maybe not a great comparison, but the numbers fit. This shows us why war is always a terrible option we should avoid as much as possible.

The older gentleman at 19:25 truly understands what is at stake when he asks where such a war would actually take place. His view is quite sobering on the US as well. I'm always amazed at how much better informed people around the world are about our own US foreign policy decisions. His remark about our abandonment of the Kurds and Afghan nationals shows just how clearly the world has lost faith in our resolve to aid and defend our allies. And he's absolutely right. Why should he trust that the US will actually defend Taiwan against a Chinese act of aggression. Depending on who is running the country, it's anybody's guess whether the US would offer aid or seek to adopt an "America first" foreign policy that abandons our allies and trade partners.

The U.S has intervened before during the Taiwan Strait Crisis'. It's important to note that the situation in Afghanistan is completely different from Taiwan. The whole world said that Russia would not send troops to attack, but only the powerful United States said that Russia would send troops. The Minsk Agreement in Ukraine was signed by Germany and France and Russia, and neither Germany nor France wanted to send troops beforehand. It is not stupid enough to wipe the butt of Germany and France, but only lend a helping hand in the surrounding countries at the right time, and the latter depends on the determination of Germany and France. Before the Sino-British Hong Kong Agreement and today's Russia Minsk Agreement, who in today's world would believe in these two evil country agreements, each country must develop its own armament and weapons, including small but intimidating projectiles.

Boss Asia is competely distorting by doing the inverview in Taipei (I call it usually "xiao beijin" or small Beijing, as most business men making good money, polluting the air in the southern half of Taiwan with their factory, enjoy the clean air up north and good connections to China). Most of Taipei is pan-blue, while more than the half Taiwan (souther half mostly) is green. So by going to the blue capital, you will get an artificially high number of sympathizers for China. Most of the ROC invaders that came, killed and took over Taiwan in the Chiense civil war, as well as their now elderly children and adult grandchildren live in the North and in Taipei. They ruled the country with an iron fist in one of the longest Martial law periods any country ever endured - the times of the White Terror. Your correct. But its sort of stupid tbh. Ccp really needs to stop pushing reunification, it only ramps up the fear of invasion in taiwan and gets them to ask for us defence help(not occupation). That and containing nationalism(and related education) could lead to an actual armistice and mutual official recognition of the two countries. They are too different to reunify now, but they can still be friends if the ccp is more flexible(and taiwan can work out constitutional and security issues). Borrowing a saying by Deng Xiaoping, "Be it a white cat or a black cat, a cat that catches mice is a good cat." Yes, be it democracy or communism or socialism, the political system that brings peace and stability to a country is a good system. A system that brings prosperity and a contented life to the people is a good system. USA is so boastful of its democracy, but look at the life of the Americans, I doubt how many Americans are satisfied with their lives. The country is so much troubled by Covid, random gun shootings, shop robberies, poverty, homelessness, crimes, racism, inequality, extremism and terrorism. Democracy in USA has been misused by crooks, abuse by politicians. --Eugene C That was why President Xi said to his government in late 2017/early 2018 that "the world is set to undergo a sea change which has not been seen in a hundred years, & China has to be prepared to deal with it." It reflects his confidence & insight into the inevitable rise of China together with Asian countries, in the face of western developed countries weakening due to their mishandling of their internal social & economic problems, & the consequential conflicts that China has to face & resolve with the West. The legacy of the past colonization of the world by the West will be a hidden driving force for US to convince some cohort countries to do whatever it takes, be it hypocritical, deceitful, dirty, &/or unscrupulous to oppress & bully China. China knew it was coming, but is soberly prepared to respond to each & every aggression with matching effect & intensity under its control of pace & initiative of/on moves. However, China's ultimate intent is to make the aggressor understand that confrontations & oppressions do not benefit anybody, but harmonious co-existence, mutual respects, & constructive co-operations for win-win results will not just benefit both sides, but also the whole world. -Donat Wu 👀

This topic has always came up every time I meet someone new or whenever I personally identify myself as a Taiwanese-American in recent times and an issue I usually try to steer away from. As for talking to or meeting someone who is Chinese, I usually find myself mentally censoring topics I end up actively trying to avoid talking about. I always pay attention whenever the issue of Taiwan comes up but sadly, living in the United States, there's practically no news report as far as I've seen about what the locals actually think, which mostly annoys me. This video is really well done and I like the variety of the interviewees.

@@cbeary2000 Well, people from the south and West are usually in the Green party while people from the North and East are in the Blue party ( Green= own country) ( Blue= combine to China) However, in the past few years the Green party has been getting more and more votes so, in the end, it all depends on your own belives That being said, the people outside of Taipei are usually not thrilled about the Chinese government if you will, Taipei is a very diverse city along with Kaohsiung ( also a very developed city that's located on the south side of Taiwan, but they have their own politics problem to solve) these cities tend to have many Chinese people or people who have relatives that are Chinese, the tours industry is also very active in these areas, so they usually support the blue party ( and corrupted governors but that's another can of worms) while people who are outside of these areas have more relations to the law and culture of Taiwan more then anything, so they usually support the green party ( this is my personal take on the situation, please to correct me if I'm wrong I'm not an expert hehe) Most of the older generation doesn't really have a strong opinion of the Chinese government since, well, in the end, Taiwan is their home and they are satisfied as long as they continue to live in the country they love ( an old man told me that once and it always gives me so much hope just by thinking about it) Many younger generations like me takes pride for our country and our freedom, so we tend to have a stronger opinion on the Chinese government. ( unfortunately many people like me have experienced strong discrimination from Chinese people while some Taiwanese people also discriminate against Chinese people quite strongly, this is an issue that both sides should acknowledge and take action to it) ( these are usually the younger generations) ( there is a lot of stereotypes that both sides have for one another due to our differences, for example, I have met some Chinese people who think Taiwan is a very undeveloped place and have no manners whatsoever -to be fair a lot of Taiwanese people like me tend to have a dirty mouth, this is due to our culture and the nature of our own dialect language- while I have met some Taiwanese who thinks Chinese people are narcissists who only cares about themselves, we also make fun of each other accent a lot as well, but yea things are not exactly as positive as it should) ( disclaimer, I have no ill will towards Chinese people at all, I do understand where these people are coming from but I don't believe any of this a single bit) ( this is racism and it's horrendous) Again, this all depends on how you are taught and your thinking, the stuff I said here are all either statically correct or my own experience, obviously I am biased when it comes to experience and politics, please don't try to fight me against my own belives, thank you :DD But yea! Hopefully that answers some of the questions you may have mate!

Rural vs City is an excellent point. It provides a whole perspective. Population however, is not as representative. But althoe wealth may be created in a city many with wealth and leisure wish to move to the countryside for "peace and beauty". And those who live and work in the rural areas, in poverty, also have a say. It appears it would provide some sort of balanced, I agree.

the fact that a lot of the younger population are stating that Taiwan right now is not relying on mainland China shows how inevitably the current education and propaganda within the island is twisting their vision. because in fact, mainland China and HK combined consist of nearly 50% of Taiwan's total trade, yet data and charts presented to the local public often exclude mainland China together with HK region.

I guess a lot of western people don't know the relationship between China and Taiwan. I'm from China and now studying in the U.S., and please allow me explain it. In short, their relationship is kind of like that of North Korea and South Korea, or Eastern Germany and Western Germany. The people in China and Taiwan are generally of the same race and speak the same language, and the cultures are pretty much alike. Taiwan does have its native people, but they account for less than 3% of the population now. Chinese people started to immigrate to Taiwan since the 1620s when Netherland conquered Taiwan, and later China defeated the Netherland and Taiwan became part of China. More Chinese people immigrated to Taiwan after that. Unfortunately, in 1895, China lost a war against Japan, and Taiwan was ceded to Japan. The Japanese ruled Taiwan for 50 years until 1945 when it lost the WWII and China got Taiwan back. At that time the population of Taiwan was about 7 million and the majority were Chinese people but they received Japanese education. Sadly, only one year after that, the Chinese civil war broke out and in only 3 years, the then Chinese government (Republic of China, or ROC) lost the war to the Russia-supported Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and had to flee to Taiwan (CCP did not have navy then). ROC brought about 3 million people from the mainland to Taiwan. The CCP founded a new regime called People's Republic of China (PRC) on the mainland, and since then there were 2 Chinas. Either side considered itself the only legal Chinese government and the other side being illegal, which is still the case for both governments. But now the people in Taiwan, especially the young people prefer to think of Taiwan as an independent country because they know that they can never defeat the PRC and there's no benefit doing that. The people in China generally prefer to think of Taiwan as part of China which should be united with the mainland.

The latest event was in west Kurdistan or north Syria where just the presence of us troops was enough to hold back turkey from doing a genocide in that region and it was guaranteed by the US to leave the troops there becuase the kurds were the biggest enemy of isis and worked together with the US troops to fight them. Trump pulled the troops out of there and send them to the oil fields which left the kurdish population exposed for turkey. US have to help Taiwan. 1. we bought alot of outdated military equipment at premium price 2. we allows US ractopamine fed pig to enter Taiwan which banned in EU,JP 3. we open travel to unreasonably overpriced holiday package to Palau for US sake. 4. we adopted and funded US Black Water covid vaccine as our homegrown vaccine.

I really appreciate how this interview carried different opinions and was very impartial. Big congrats for you all. I hope you continue your impartial journalism without caring about if you get approving judgment or not in the comment section. Already many outlets are doing partial journalism, please you don't. Also huge respects to Taiwanese people for being able interrogate the media outlets of their country! From Kurdistan, Middle East...

As a foreigner me and my friends, always thought that 95% of the Taiwanese are anti to China "invasion" or anti to be called as a "province" of China, that is whye and my friends always spreading the words like "save Taiwan from China" "Taiwan is independent country" "Taiwan must have its own sovereignity"... But now after watching this, I think we were wrong for doing those things because we all can see that most or almost the people that were interviewed are not like so very determined or aggressive to shout to the whole world that "Taiwan is Taiwan and not a part of China, that Taiwan has its own sovereignity and 95%+ of people wants taiwan to be recognize as an independent country by the whole world." Now ,what I can say is... "Ok" "We'll never care" "it's an internal family fight" "there are many Taiwanese who doesnt really want to be totally separated to China"... Sorry for intervention 😅😅😅 Keep safe and happy reunion with China, soon you'll have your reunion now that the World is busy focussing in EUROPE and Middle East... We'll never believe again those foreign fake media's that people of Taiwan seeks help for defending their country or for fighting their sovereignity against China. 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😊😊😊...

As an American I find this extremely helpful to better understand Taiwan. Taiwan and China pop up in the news all the time, but what is it really like there? Most people in America know that China is communist and Taiwan is a democracy, but beyond that the average person doesn't know much. I appreciate the unfiltered perspectives of the Taiwanese!
