:Exploring Abandoned Anything can be dangerous or Deadly without experience. I don't encourage anyone to enter any Abandoned structure. Not only is safety a concern, but often times its illegal and when possible, i seek out permission from the owner or local police. I simply go to document its history before it's gone forever and leave things the way I find them. I only take pictures and only leave footprints. I assume all the risks & responsibility before doing this. Please don't attempt to do this on your own. Their could be nails, Asbestos, Falling concrete soft floors, animals or other hazards. Thanks for Watching

Brings back so many memories. I worked there before. The area that has been covered up with the tarp was a back room. (only half the store was used.) The area you said was the freezer use to be a produce room when another store was there. It was used for storage when the save a lot was there. The meat room was the area you said was a kitchen. First cut meat in that room, crazy to see it like that now. Also, the "garbage compactor" is actually a cardboard bailer.

14:15 those are compressor pumps for the walk-in salesfloor refrigeration and freezer cases. The glass door walk-ins and standalone "bin" type units out on the floor would all have their own zones and valves plumbed to the system, if not a dedicated compressor and refrigeration loop for each.
@marcberm
@marcberm 2 года назад
@corey Babcock Hard to tell. Most similar Copeland Discus compressors now use R502 and sometimes R22 or others. It's weird that all that's left is the bank of compressors. Anything that has swinging doors or curtains will be a cooler rather than a freezer. Freezers would always have latched doors. The areas with sinks will be prep areas. The one with the 'MEAT PLU' area will be meat/deli, the other would probably be produce.

Funny, I just shopped at my local Save-A-Lot. They do not sell prepared foods. The two rooms with sinks we’re probably the meat department and the produce department. It is weird to see an empty store. Hopefully someone will come in reclaim or rebuild and provide some good jobs for the area.

and! the big sinks in the back, can be used for cleaning produce off before it goes to the shelf, ie; washing ice off of brocoli and cleaning off cucumbers, etc, etc. most produce comes in very dirty, or covered in bugs, so they need to be washed and sanitised, and be inspected before they can hit the shelves and be sold to customers. as well... some of the sinks could have been in the meat cooler, to wash off things like equipment or knives, and keep the meat cooler sterilised too. they serve a great many purposes in the store! as well... my summation for the pumps in the back back section? thing? (we have about 32 in our store) could be used for moving coolant in the freezers/fridges, or moving air flow to keep the store heated or cooled. i'm not entirely sure, as we've never realy had issues with ours/i've never had to ask! but i hope this does help a little bit!
@RSterkenburg
@RSterkenburg 2 года назад
Yep the compressors are for refrigeration. The huge hot water supply is to meet the demand at the end of the way when all departments are closing up and need to clean. Produce, seafood, meat, deli, even the bakery will wash their department top to bottom (at least they're required to).

@LeGrandSarrazin

As someone who worked for years in a grocery store and part of that produce, can confirm. The sink was also used to “spruce up” the older heads of lettuce, by cutting off a slice of the stem and soaking them in the water for a while or so, then lay them all out on a steel tray and put them back in the walk-in fridge for a while so the pores close back up after soaking up the water. It worked more or less, though thinking on it can’t say exactly how sanitary that was lol.

Back when our store, Giant Eagle, was going through a remodel our Dairy section got completely renovated for the new Beer, Wine, and Liqour section that was added. The amount of shelving that was removed made me realize just how 'big' of an area that those shelves take up. Later on when I had to retrieve a ball a customer had tossed up into the freezer section. I got me a different perspective of just how much 'room' there actually was.

Hi, I wonder if those things you were wondering about at 14:30 are back up generators for the freezers or maybe just back up freezing units ???? A very cool explore and I respect you for only leaving footprints and only taking photographs/video, there are too many little idiots with no brains or respect running around destroying everything they see, so thank you. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx 💖

Save A Lot supermarkets here in central Maine closed up in the past few years. They had a lot of cheap food.

I would imagine those black things in the mechanical room are compressors for the refrigerators/freezers

Those are refrigeration freezer compressors. After 35 years in the grocery business I know them well lol

The employee photo made me so sad, they took everything else from the building but a photo of a work family they left behind.

I could tell you some stories. I know most of the people in the photo. I left a year before they closed. Unfortunately, there was a lot of drama in that store. I might stop by and pick up the photo and write the names I know and donate it to the local historical society in that area

@@Mrberlinnh Not to be rude, but why would a historical society want a photo of the employees from a grocery store?

@@planejet42 Ah, someone who has never interacted with a historical society!
