Inside An Heirloom Home Where Nature and Art Become One (House Tour)

Inside an heirloom home, unification lies at the centre. In designing Wainscott Residence, Bates Masi + Architects considers the fabric of the area and the immediate and future needs of the house. Its structure and materiality connect the residing family to the landscape, art and heritage of the area, whilst also bringing them together through considered multigenerational living.
Bates Masi + Architects thoughtfully responds to the needs of the future home’s inhabitants, who came with a desire to display a significant art collection inside an heirloom home, to maintain views of the landscape and to house their two adult children as the family grows. This forms the basis of the residence’s distinct structure, which is made of three individual volumes that operate just as seamlessly separately as they do together.
Wainscott Residence reveals what lies inside an heirloom home. It is inherently linked to the surrounding landscape, dominated by picturesque green lawns, trees and a distant skyline that give a fresh, vibrant feel that is echoed in the coveted art collection. The southern aspect connects to the surroundings; every south-facing room opens up to the outside, with the doors pocketed into the walls so that the house can be completely unified with the landscape.
The home’s palette and materiality also connect to the calm, verdant seaside location in which it sits. Bronze and cedar are used on the exterior, designed to patina and weather with the family as they age and grow. Inside an heirloom home is often a considered palette. Within the Wainscott Residence, there is a limited palette of materials such as limestone and plastered walls, and oak ceilings, floors, cabinetry and casework. The limited palette helps to unify the house and nurtures a sense of being present.
The family’s passion is integral to the home’s overall impression and acts as yet another way to unify the residence. The inclusion of an “art cube”- a glass cube where various artworks are displayed - offers a distinctive space and sits as the connecting point between the home’s various volumes to become a hub where the family come together.
Revealing what lies inside an heirloom home, Wainscott Residence intertwines family, art and landscape into a layered, functional and unified whole. It is this sense of cohesion that shapes the house in terms of both its circulation as well as its form, forming a home that will continue to adapt and evolve.

I love the texture they achieve by using different shapes of the same material for the facade. Also the whole volume of the house with the huge balcony and the gable roof combined with the retracted ground floor is very appealing. GJ :-)

This house is so insanely gratuitous. I felt gross watching the whole thing, but it's just SO MUCH that I couldn't manage to look away. Well-built, for sure, but if having an 800sf living room is tasteful then I think I'd prefer to keep living in the mud with the rest of the peasants. Oh yeah, at 5:21 you can see pencil marks the metalworker forgot to erase. That was my favorite part of the house.

I'd love to know the final price / m2 of these magnificent homes. I wonder if they are much more expensive than a regular one. The investment in architecture fees must be much higher, but I wonder if it can be diluted in the overall cost of building a house...

Immersed in nature? Connection to the landscape? I do see lots and lots of grass. That's something completely different than nature. Deeply miss trees that accommedate more intimate spaces where you can relax. Have a trip to Italy or France and get inspired by some good practises.

There were other houses similar to this one in the developing area. My friends would try to jump between the corners out the window in the L shape. It is a huge jump with a small push off point. I've done it with help but refused to do it myself. One of them managed to do it a couple times themselves but took a tumble to smashed into the side of the house.

I am not a fan of exterior architecture of this one. I get how it's roof blends in with existing heritage houses, it still comes off as something industrial to my eye because of its size. And I get how they want to showcase the art, but interiors are just too bland.
@agusgamalerio9038
@agusgamalerio9038 Год назад
I absolutly love the architecture of the house, but PLEASE stop promoting this houses as SUSTAINABLE. This house is far from it. The amount of material of this house could build 15 family houses. It cant be sustainable when is eilitist at it's core.
@mrvk39
@mrvk39 Год назад
lol you love trendy labels. "elitist". It can be sustainable and be large if it doesn't consume large amounts of energy to heat those places.
@agusgamalerio9038
@agusgamalerio9038 Год назад
@@mrvk39 the large energy compsumtion is in the material carbon footprint. If you are using that much wood and concrete, it can`t be sustaniable
@mrvk39
@mrvk39 Год назад
@@agusgamalerio9038 you don't know enough to make that claim. First of all, most of the wood and other materials used might've been repurposed. Concrete, obviously wasn't, but a concrete building can stand for centuries, while common wood frame construction lasts for 50-60 years. You need to look at the carbon footprint over the life of the project, and a far larger projects that lasts much longer might still be more energy efficient than a smaller traditional house. Obviously, an energy efficient small footprint building would be better for the environment. A large energy efficient, long-lasting building can also be better for the environment vs. common alternatives.

Please change the music - it’s overbearing and melodramatic - It competes in volume with the people speaking. The video is showing beautiful architecture and this specific music at this volume detracts from the enjoyment of viewing this video. This occurs in many of not all of your videos.

I appreciate the architectural analysis and the explanations, but to me, despite all the attention to detail and thought, the home comes off as cold and sterile. A home should, ultimately, feel 'cozy'... and that means not having it museum-quality levels. There's going to (or at least there should) be a bit of a mess; a symptom of daily life. This home doesn't allow for that because it would just look TOO out of place; it's more concerned about impressing outside guests, rather than 'housing' the daily demands of life.
