A very long unskippable ad for an ebay optic fibre kit was played for me here in Australia. I ended up watching the whole ad because it was interesting.
wtf are you on about? I've been using adblock for many years now. And I have absolutely no ads on youtube. I often leave youtube playing music on the background for hours and no ads for me atleast.
A tip: For a wider viewing angle. Instead of using those caps that you were talking about, you can melt all of the the ends with a lighter and they form little beads at the tips. Discovered this by accident.
I love to say that i have been a fan for awhile and thought I'm not the smartest nor do i know much of what the specific components do, i myself always found myself to tinker and disassemble things just for the fact that I'm bored and want to see how something works and I just love moments like "Is this glued in? Oh... well it was, just need to fix that in a second." Idk its just the small jokes you make and the random things that happen keep bringing me back, plus as i said I love to take things apart.
I am continually impressed by your range of knowledge, Clive. There are tons of 3D modelers/animators who don't understand the importance of differing indices of refraction when doing photorealistic compositions.
Didn't know this was available. You can carefully drill out that gland-nut connector and put at least twice as many fibers into it; although I'd think that more lamps would give you more choices of colors and colors can be mixed by combining fibers into different openings. Thanks, Clive for such a great idea!
My tablet just decided to take me on a little involuntary tour of the links on your page, deleting my totally completed comment that I was proofing at the time. The up side of that is that I have now started this video 3 times. Each with another ad, of course. The first time was just the ad you can skip, which I did as usual at 4.9 seconds. The second and third were the same with the addition of a pop-up on the third. The second may or may not have had a pop-up, I wasn't on the page long enough before my tablet's delayed response fit bounced me back off.Thank you for all your awesome videos. You have been a major motivator for me to get back into electronics. It's a great time to have such a hobby, when I was younger there was not such a wealth of free information available as there is today. Plus everyone is throwing out tons of great salvageable electronics nowadays. Half the time I plug the stuff in and it still works just fine. Then I usually take it to bits anyway. Thank you for that.
I'm from France and I got no advertising at all on either of my two Android devices (phone and TV box). Thank you for another very interesting video, your explanations and eagerness to show us the internal bits of things are very well appreciated.
I bought an expensive LED controller. Expensive for my budget. Around 20 dollars but it is a big money in my country. I accidentally unpaired my controller. Then I was browsing your videos came along this wondered what it is. Started watching saw the same remote and I knew that you were showing how to pair stuff. It worked. Big thanks to you man! I love your videos!
I got a skippable LG ad. On the right there's another one though, it says that some guy invented a medicine to let your cucumber grow 6cm in 4 days, and that doctors hate him. Poor guy.
Just a skippable 30-second advert. Actually pretty tame in terms of advertising. Most videos I watch on other channels are absolutely stuffed with ads.
I actually bought the same kit recently (in 300 point and with a motor that provides "twinkle"). I used it to enhance a high-quality space-themed canvas print. Worked quite well, and the remote control enables a decent enough amount of customisation
Thanks for the review, I'll be very careful in selecting a product for my light project. The conversation was great, information with a touch of reality and humor. Thanks!
51 steps per color are completely logical. THe controller uses a three byte RGB color value (#000000 to #FFFFFF) each byte (#00 to #FF) contains the value for each of the colored LED. so you get brightness values for each color from 00 to #FF what actually are 255 (decimal). for ease of youse the controller increments and decrements these values by 5 for each button press, so you get 51 steps for each color (51 by 5 equals 255 equals #FF).
I went to Epcot many years ago, and I have to say that fibre optic panel is one of my memories from there. I didn't notice the damage though. I have often thought of making a small version but how would you go about doing that, heavy concrete and flimsy fibres cant be easy to work with.
I have an AdBlocker but I chose to get RU-vid ads. I live in Germany and I'm always getting an extremely annoying Amazon ad ("Ihre Freundin hat Geburtstag...."), that I can skip after 5 seconds.
I almost always get ads about Toast IT, which are extra annoying because it seems like they invented something that all Dutch people know and love as a "tosti" (I'm Dutch, but living in Germany).
Someone probably said this already, ADs on RU-vid are usually by a "auction" some people see ADs and some people don't. However, their are times where everyone sees ADs all the time. I didn't see a AD when I started watching your video. Keep up the good work!
I got a pre-roll skippable advert of some movie trailer. I don't really know what it was, as I always skip as soon as I'm able. Oh, and no, I don't use adblock. People who do ruin RU-vid for everyone.
If it were possible to whitelist certain RU-vidrs, I definitely would. I use uBlock Origin because sites and their advertisements are becoming pure cancer. Full-screen "OMG REGISTER NAO" every five seconds. Fuck that.
idk what sites you are going to ... I don't run across popups or crazy advertisements or anything. Then again, I shop for components, and do social media online. I don't go in for that dangerous stuff...
Oh, those are called Shadow Boxes (at least, in graphics design lingo) Yea, they are a bit annoying. I usually make it a rule to immediately leave a site and never go back when I see one. They are really horrible.
RU-vid should have never added revenue, most people are only doing it for the money so they can get fat and not work hard for the money. (Oh and BTW I'm a uBlock Origin user (so I use adblock :) ))
Hi Clive, I'm getting the advert that you can skip after 5 seconds. I use my Android to watch RU-vid. whilst I'm here, massive fan of your channel, learn a lot, laugh a lot and my mum who loves the Edinburgh Tattoo also loves the Tattoo vlogs. many thanks for the great work.
its a shame you asked about the ads, it totally dominated the comments section. Unfortunate as i was looking forward to seeing subscribers views or experiences with Fibre Optic light units.
+Thomas Galea What about proxies, caches, NAT, etc. One IP per unique visitor is not a given. Checking IPs to identfy users is 1990's. I'm sure they use cookies.
bigclivedotcom It is probably a country by coutry basis, I use ublock on most places, but on youtube it is disabled. And i get 15 min ads that can be skipped only after 2-3 mins. Our advertisers are kinda insane.
Intro ad. Video was interesting because I love all forms of lighting and I just completed a telecommunications course wherein we actually cleaved and terminated a 250/125 micron glass fiber and passed data through it, connecting to the internet. Light is fascinating. I can think of a lot of ways to utilize this type of fiberoptic lighting in decoration.
I don't know why, I just continue to use the NFC payment features that have been a part of my phone for ages. What's that? Oh yeah, that's basically android pay. Why are they only advertising it now?
Tim Morgan they have been doing ads over here too but it honestly doesn't change anything for us. Both visa and MasterCard provide apps that can use the NFC and have done so for a few years now. That was about the time they both pushed to get paypass and paywave to become standard so now most places have NFC eftpos machines. Did the UK have a similar thing to us? I am in Australia by the way.
We've had Apple pay and contactless debit/credit cards in the UK for over a year now. I've literally only ever seen the Android Pay logo on a shop once lol, though I'd imagine android pay would work where ever apple pay and contactless works as its just NFC? I have a contactless card but my bank hasn't setup with android pay yet. Though depending how easy it is to use I'd probably just stick to card. Pull my wallet out and tap it on the machine without even opening it... be useless if I have to actually unlock my phone or open an app etc.
This reminds me of the 70's and my rotating and color changing fiber optic lamp and 4 foot/1.2 meter fiber optic tree... along with the velvet blacklight posters lol. I'd really love to find another good quality lamp like I had, it was about 20" in diameter, little bigger than a basketball. Best nightlight ever :)
Those old high quality fiber optic balls lost their novelty and no one wanted to pay $300 for them any more. Also they didn't last forever, the fibers continually tangle and clump together from the rotation, the light burns out, the motor strips, and the color gels fade from the heat. I scored one long after they disappeared by asking a guy at a flea market "do you have any of those old high quality style that used to cost $300?" Yes, I sure do. How much for it? $300. Only one I ever had but it didn't last long. They sure were pretty.
I pay for RU-vid red as it's honestly the only platform I watch videos on. I don't care about any tv shows (Besides the grand tour on amazon) and seldom have time to watch movies. So paying for RU-vid is worth it to me. Thanks for your many great videos Clive!
I have watched this video twice now. Once yesterday, and today. In both cases have had the pre-roll skippable add at the beggining. No popup adds during the video. Watching in the UK. Hope that helps :) PS love the videos Clive :)
As a small content creator, I can tell you this, RU-vid RED DOES SUPPORT whoever you watch I get about 1/10th of my revenue from RED so yeah no complaints from me, better than using Adblock and forcing people to quit because they have to dedicate all their time to a full-time job.
You can also heat up the end of the plastic ones so they melt into a bead, that also increases the viewing angle. One of the disney imagineers showed me that.
I have adblock plus and I never see any advertisements on videos or even those on the side of the video right above the column that has the video proposals.
Those no longer work, since RU-vid has moved to video ads. Plus, if you have one, all ads are now unskippable. Also, Chris is right. Using adblockers prevents youtubers from getting the ad money, which they desperately need to support their content making.
Poss, but I admit I'm a bit biassed as I was keen to send a Chinese I pad as I wanted to know what he thought about it.(not expecting it back, you understand) Anyway, got no reply. Petty. Probably, but annoying. As a fellow Glaswegian I felt he was letting the side down.Good videos tho. That's true. C'est la vie.
hi Clive just a little note to help with the number of strands and the reason for the larger fibre holder ( cable gland ). When you use the set you will need to cut the fibres closest to the light box. When this is done you will have leftover fibres that can be used for the next circle etc that will fan out from the light box. I hope you know what I mean?.. So when it's all finished you should have more than doubles the amount of strands used. When bound with tape and put back into the gland It will be about 400 strands used. Cheers
I don't use an ad-blocker on youtube - I have it set to allow, but usually skip them. What I saw was an advert for digital isolator...was actually quite interesting as they stuck 24Kv through the Optocoupler and it exploded, good stuff! Nobody likes adverts, but the adverts preceding your videos are usually very interesting, almost too good to skip...almost. I've seen network cable testers with tdr, an electrical database and fibre optic testers just to name a few.
Cool product and I appreciate the time taken to disassemble controller unit to determine how well designed it is. Could you post a link to the same exact product that was reviewed please so I can purchase? Thank you. No ads since I'm a RU-vid Red subscriber.
I'm trying to create a headrest costume for Halloween of Medusa's snake hair. I'm wondering how effective would this product be if it I blend it in the hair (wig) fiber giving that snake light up illusion with the control wired from the back attached to a cord, down into my arm where I have the switch in my hand. I can always blend the cord with the snake scale catsuit sleeve. Do you think this item would be effective?
the amount of various parts amazes me, for instance, where did they get that metal enclosure from? is it just for this project or is it mass manufactured? and where does the metal come from? who digs up the ore for that metal and how is it produced? there sjust so many components and so many people and lines down the chain of production and yet its still so cheap since we've gotten so good at doing these things.
Wow you could design a lighting system with a programmable touch screen using a recycled cell phone using this product to give any room your preferred lightning. That's very cool!
Trying to find the best fiber to buy for the star ceiling effect where the light shines at the point and not out the sides. Please give me an exact fiber spec to go off. Thank you
when fibre optic literally looks like the things on pre furnished Christmas trees that lighs up as the tree spins on a colored plate that has line shining through it
Hi Clive, is it true that the internal reflection is achieved with a coating? A plain perspex rod will behave in the same 'light guide' way with no such coating. The light leaks out wherever the surface isn't polished doesn't it? Brilliant videos, as always - thank you for hours of educational entertainment. Will.
Nice video. I am thinking of making something with fibers like that. See... since a bit over year my wife and I have this new hobby: *Geocaching.* I try to make a flat plane where I put the fibers in several patterns. Instead of using a LED light source this kit came with, I want to have to _"visitors"_ bring a bright flashlight. And instead of having the fibers meet at one single point, I want to create a small ridge, a channel where a the flashlight can slide over. By sliding it from left to right, some fibers are going to be lit. This way a simple animation happens at the visitor's side of the construction. At the end the visitor will see a number or a GPS coordinate _they_ have to go next. It seems like a cool little crea-cache, as the geocache community calls it. The trick for me is to make the patterns on a board, and have the fibers stick to it. I will cover the plane with "mirror foil", since that fits a certain theme I have in mind. Do you think it makes sense to spray paint chrome colored paint on the fibers? I just want to make sure to not loose too much light, since I don't know what kind of light the _visitor_ might bring. And I noticed that the fibers spilled a lot of light. I want to try to keep as much light inside the fiber until it is shown to the _visitor_
You could drill a panel with a grid of 5 x 7 dot matrix style holes with the fibre bundle making up the words and numbers, and the unused positions with a stud of identical but unconnected fibre protruding. I wouldn't recommend spraying the fibres with paint. They have a thin coating of material to make them work that could be damaged by solvent.
I got a covid free ocean cruise to book for summer. It seems like polyamide light fibre has been here forever but I have a few meters of glass graded index if you can think of what to do with it Clive.
What'd be nice, would be to have several of the RGBW LEDs, each feeding a different part of the bundle of fibres. So you could have multiple colours on your ceiling (etc) at once. You could do it with these just by ordering several kits and mixing the fibres up on the ceiling, or you could split the bundle into a few smaller ones, and have a unit with several LEDs to drive it. Does it do fading between colours or just flat switching? You could maybe replace the 8051 with an AVR or PIC, and program in some better effects. It could use the existing hardware. Unless the 8051 is a weird one with high-current driving for the LEDs, but it's not, right? Maybe a computer interface would be good, use one of the generic radio modules and connect it to a PC to send the light control signals. This is something I might do to my house if I were decorating. Bet it can be pleasant in the right place. Even, maybe, just a plank of wood on a stand, with fibres fitted into holes, would make a nice lamp.
Not on YTR and no ads. Oklahoma, USA. I have a few ideas for lights like that. I wonder if it would be enough light for an under cabinet light for a kitchen counter. Very versatile. I like it. Can you give a link?
1:40 Skippable ad here. US. Whenever I view my videos on my channel, I always get an add regardless, unless I look at them through the edit mode in video manager. That would be cool to put on a set of stairs, either going on top of the steps, or out the front face of the steps. So many possible applications!
I have a question about kits like this: Is it possible/advisable to connect this to a common room light switch. Will it turn on without use of the remote control? And if so: will it turn on on the last colour setting? I'm looking into connecting this to a light switch in my toiletroom. (not kidding) So it'd be nice if you don't have to use the remote en set the correct color each time you turn on the lights in my toilet.
