That's quite fun to hear "3L is a small engine" because in Europe, that's very very big for an engine, even a 2L engine is considered sporty

I really wonder how reliable these new high-output designs will be in the long run. The new 3.0 Duramax is especially interesting because it uses an aluminum block. Then again, the diesel engine that powered the Soviet T-34 tank also had an aluminum block and it lasted a while....

Honestly the tuned power numbers were not that bad considering it's a 3.0 liter motor with small turbos. Honestly think that's pretty good overall.

Thanks for the video! Currently driving a ‘23 X5 M50d - bought it just before the LCI to get this engine - not disappointed at all! Feels more alive than the M40i Z4! Really a magnificent engine 👌🏻 In South Africa about 2/3 of BMWs are diesel - good power with great economy - it’s a pity they killed it off and all we have is the 30d with the sample hybrid system 😩

Diesel is the future and answer to the automotive industry. Not electric

This is why ICE is dead. The ever increasing complexity to meet emission regulations or improve drivability makes these things unreliable and expensive. Electric drivetrains consist of a battery and an electric motor plus a simple one-speed transmission. If battery technology gets better at the current pace there is soon no business case vor an ICE car anymore.

One thing that B57 make happy is it share simillar block construction to B58. So BMW make both diesel and gasoline engine on simillar cylinder block. And diesel usually run with higher boost from the factory. Thats make B58 very strong because the block has same standard as B57 does.

The M57 with two CP3's and a couple of Tim's turbos = 550-600hp, 800trq

The best thing that engine can do is brake down and bankrupt the owner. Good luck to the bastard who gets the task to get those 4 turbos in sinc correctly! Also, a 1.6 4 cylinder is a small engine, not a 3.0 I6..

Years ago (2012) I talked with a BMW tech about the N57D30 (Tri-Turbo) engine about its reliability: "Usually the first customer of a car with that engine is a lessee, so he/she does not care about repairs as the car is sold after about two years. But beware if you're the 2nd or 3rd owner - even minor repairs are expensive because we have to remove the engine from the car as everything is so crammed inside the engine bay!" (and we're not even talking about BMW OEM spare part and labor prices...).

can you not just swap the 4 small turbos out for 4 big turbos and see some hefty power and torque gains

Could make an interesting option for a supercar motor built-in someone's garage using a Porsche Trans axel And you take off a bunch of those emissions standards And slightly upscale the turbos that are built into it I mean sure you will lose some miles per gallon Going to somewhere about the thirty's range But I think that would be just fine Although you would just need a trans that is built to handle the amount of torque

How much co2 is generated in production , packaging , and transportation of Co2 combating tech ? Somebody has to manufacture the DEF liquid, put it in a plastic container, then a cardboard box, and transport it to the store. Now multiply that by all the other components.

Alotta guys prefer the single turbo 30d models (530d, 730d). This is because there's aftermarket parts available like turbos that can increase power.

One of my colleagues from university has a mechanic shop in which he does mostly BMW's. This 2017 750Ld came in the shop with some turbo problems. The quirky thing about it was that it was an ex-government car and it came with a 40 horsepower bump from factory. I got chauffered around on a little test drive in the most important place in that car, the rear right seat. Even with its faulty turbos, it glued me to seat and was quiet all the way up to the redline.

And in the real world the Euro 6 engines are finding all of these emission gimmicks are being deleted by garages just to run by 60k miles, they just dont work for long enough.

Mercedes seems to have done better with a single turbo hybrid diesel from the cls450

Once someone has a quality delete system for all that horrible emissions equipment, I bet those could make massive amounts of reliable hp and torque

Their naming system make's complete sense and gives most of general information needed on the equipment and design.. Whats the issue

I drive this engine daily in g31 2018 m550d, it is like nothing I have ever driven, such power.

Friend of mine has a 2021 M50d. An absolute beast of a thing. It just keeps pulling and pulling. He's a sucker for punishment though as he used to own a triple-turbo version (2014 I think) which blew all 3 turbos and wrecked the engine

Absolutely pointless. Electric single turbos with variable turbine geometry is far more efficient

I dd a older bmw m57 i6 twinturbo it's tuned to about 400hp 600tq 40mpg. I've been very happy with it runs mid 12s looks good and cheap to run

If it’s anything like the old BMW M57 diesel it’s a better boat anchor than it is a diesel engine. Terrible engines in the marine environment. Yanmar used the M57 for their 4/6 BY series.

This has to be one of the most stereotypically German engines ever made. Who else could come up with such a crazily complex solution as this!? The combination of performance, driveability and economy are very, very impressive. But man, I would NOT want to own that engine outside of the warranty period! It will be an absolute money pit as it ages, there is just SO MUCH to go wrong! 😱

6:28 the 10 injections per engine cycle thing is a staple of modern common rail direct injection diesels, basically fuel is injected gradually instead of all at once, which improves power, torque, performance when cold and emissions. It was actually pioneered by FIAT who patented the JTD system (jet turbodiesel) which later evolved into JTDm/Multijet and later still into Multijet 2 and 3, which is used on FIAT group (FIAT, Lancia, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Jeep and so on) diesels up to this day. This system was sold by Bosch and formed the basis for all contemporary crdi diesel engines including VW group's TDi, Peugeot group HDi and BlueHDi and BMW and Mercedes diesels

Search 'M2 50d' , a swapped M2 in South Africa making 600hp and 1000Nm+, running on watermeth and Nitrous.

Neighbor has that power out of a 2011 3.0 diesel 335D. Egr delete and tune. At 85mph we were getting 54mpg.

Really nice video but I have a sugestion for you. I for one am an European so I don t really know what the torque figures are translated to nm. Maybe you could add metric calculation in your videos as well. As in HP to kw, ft-lb to Nm and mpg to l/100km. Would make it a lot more enjoyable to watch for me. Otherwise great content!

Ah yes...how to make things so complicated that you need to replace the engine for any small malfunction

I own 550d, g30 with simple ecu and gearbox tune and i achieved 3.5 sec 0-60 and 11.6 sec on 1/4 mile. Car is fantastic. 190000 km on clock and everything fine

Definitely a fascinating motor in it's own right. One would think that the CO2 emissions would be relatively low given its impressive fuel economy.

Aluminum block + 4 turbos = best reliability

Not meant for tuning. This engine meant to achieve the v8-v10 powerbands from the '90s and '00s with smaller displacement. The only reason this engine is complicated on this level because it was trying to survive the Euro 6d and in the meantime it became a ticking time bomb. At 10+ years old and over 200k miles these will be the most unreliable, most expensive things to own ever.

Having one... and it's great for the Autobahn :D ... and average consumption are 7.6liters per 100km... HOWDY

Germans truly are the kings of Diesel, Rudolf Diesel himself would be proud of this beast. Delete EGR and this baby would ACE that pesky Euro6 limit and do 50mpg

I want to see a triple turbo setup. 3 different sizes. Little to big. So you get response big power up top and everything in between. I’m sure they could do it with their new electronic waste gates. They can make the turbos do anything they want with software.

I am gonna type an opinion because I wanna type an opinion... It probably fairly "scientifically" or ~physically incorrect, kind of "make believe" (something I think I dislike, yet most probably often than not fall victim of it) That is when we imagine the fact base to support a thought we just would like to be true, rather than it being actually true :( (And me at least ain`t no in child age ranges still :( (And that of course is bad even for children, but at least they are excused for lack of hard physical reality facts saturation) When I hear Aluminum and Engine I think Melting, Cracking open garbage w8st of an engine... I am sorry... it is as it is... I A) Am in no way or mean car mechanic, in no way or meaning metallurgist , or I haven`t driven nearly enough cars to the extend where I'd actually get to reach those "limitations" (ergo the make believe thing). Aluminum is not man things metal... it just isn`t... it`s best property I can think of is not being attracted by magnets (well being light as well, but aren`t most male man striving to increase their personal weight in muscles... or something?... That in itself is contradiction) Now I still am aware of few things... Cars close to most of them >do need< to be also women, children and elderly enabled device... Also Diesel engines running super hot thing aside... Actually according to one of my theory A car is about as good as it`s cooling system. Which means that Lighter Aluminum Engine with appropriate cooling and same HPs in a vehicle of exactly the same time as one with heavier whatever else same HP engine (not aluminum for heavier) the better HP/KG car wins every time all the times under every possible way for the cars to compete... a.k.a.: Start... Stop... Circuit time attack on clean track. (start stop are drag and breaking from 100 to 0 o_0)... Also the Lighter car >will drive longer< per same amount of fuel as an added bonus. So well constructed Aluminum engine + Reliable enduring cooling= super good solution. But somewhere in me there is "voice" (erm as a figure of speech, I managed to silence my voices a fair time ago, and hopefully they aren`t coming back :P) that states "Dude If your car`s engine cannot drive on kerosene with cooling as a fancy meme you are doing it wrong... I just can`t shake that thought of just thinking of an engine made of an aluminum is a waste.. even if everything shows that it isn`t. I can`t specify exactly what Engines should be made of... but it should be a lot harder and a lot more heat resistant than Aluminum is... I bet I can melt thin aluminum sheet with like a cigarette lighter. Unfortunately for every production car that much more realistically will be driven by your mom, her Dad and cousin Jimmy, of your wealthy uncle, that have had his driver`s license since 3 months ago. That badzilion times better engine for the car manufacturer that is making their cars only mean more expenses for raw materials, harder manufacturing with demand for more expensive industrial grade machines (Harder to work materials require more complicated large machines made of even better materials to like melt, mold, press, cut... Aluminum is more or less like the Plastic of Metal World to give a reference) and the car itself will be heavier and burn more fuel per mile while it will spent it`s entire life doing more than 60 mph ~twice ... one 80 and once 85 this 2 times in before it got 2nd handed for even "fancier" (which might realistically be probably shittier, excuse my French) newer model, when your Mom drove you to your cousin`s Villa with her brother`s permission.

I think you got something wrong with the emissions regulation. It's not correct that they sacrified due to the fact that the engine is emitting more than 95g of CO2 per km. In fact most (larger) engines don't. And it is allowed to produce such engines anyway. In fact what counts in Europe are the over all emissions of the brands fleet. If your company fails to meet the emission goals then your company has to pay penalties. So many companies sacrified their larger engines - especially those which sold worst. And those two facts came together for the x50d or the 760i. Both emitted a lot of CO2 AND weren't sold very often. Combined with even stricter upcoming emission standards (Euro 7) that marked the end for this fascinating engine. Funfact: when I bought my G31 (btw you forgot this model in the lineup ;)) I was struggeling with myself which 6-cylinder diesel to choose. In the end I decided to go for the 530d as the 50d is faster in acceleration and that is about it. This only pro argument for me stood against higher maintanance cost, more parts that could fail, higher buying price and so on.

You would think with hydrogen on the brink of being introduced perhaps a separate tank of HHO gas could be injected into the fuel system of this power beast to make it comply with emissions. There are some papers showing hydrogen stratified with diesel fuel making for very minimal emissions.

BMW came with 50d 3 and 4 turbo diesel engines way before Audi’s SQ7. Great video nonetheless.

I'd like to know who set these ridiculous emissions standards and why do they think they achievable and affordable. These BMWs are going to be a nightmare to wliwn out of warranty. BMW struggles with reliability on normal engines and transmissions, can you imagine all the bs that's keeping these vehicles perform and compliant? All i see here us pain

Yup, we've seen a lot of changes in the diesel engines world recently. Like for example wiping them out of Europe via most restrictive regulations in the world.

This thing is made to blast the Autobahn. Doing high speed for long time at low revs without having to stop for fuel. I drove one of these from Stuttgart to Munich and just one and a half half hour.

tuners like g power or abt always keep their power outputs low for reliability. So normal Tuners push these engines to over 500hp with 1000nm of torque.

I´m driving one of these and it´s great. Mostly driving calm. But when i need ist, the Power is magnicifent.

My 2011 335d M57 sequential turbo is a ton of fun. Quick but very expensive to maintain. I fear the infamous #1 main bearing failure though. My wife’s 2006 MB320 CDI OM648 is much more reliable. It can be “hot-rodded” to 300 hp/550 lb/ft of torque at the wheels while getting 40 mpgs.

Finally a RU-vidr who can make the stupid merceds kids shut up ( I knew already about this engine and that it is used in the x7 m50d)

9mins lost... The engine has a lot more then this.. Plus it will go to 500hp or more. You didn't even mention the 2 stage charge coolers that makes this thing run consistently fast on all situations..

The M550d B57S with the 4 turbo's is actually a very robust and stable engine. We have several clients in our shop that have them, no engine issues at all, not even a higher kilometers (200000+). The previous N57S engine did have some issues, specially when tuned. Tuners did not understand the 3-turbo engine then and overdone it. The M550d B57S can safely be tuned to 480HP and 900NM (even 1000NM, that is the ZF torque limit). Alpine still uses this engine in the D5S, it's a real gem.
