Is Costco worth the emotional and time effort these days?! Come with me to the Costco of London UK to see what Christmas goods we can find and see if they are good value. This was filmed at the Wembley Costco in north London Nov 2023. Do you have a membership, is it worth it? What are your must have items?

As an American, I was shocked at how uncrowded that Costco store was. Every Costco in the US that I have shopped at is always packed - doesn’t matter the day or time. Kirkland is their store brand and it’s usually quite good and nearly equivalent to main brands. The UK Costco does have some items I wish we had over here. I found it interesting that you are able to buy a single loaf of bread, where as in the US, you must buy bread in packs of 2 at Costco. Everything is big, but as an American store, it fits with the larger houses over here.

As a Brit, I'm also amazed at how quiet the London store is. I live 100 miles away in Birmingham, and the local Costco is ALWAYS heaving to the point that I can't shop there most of the time. We also queue along the highway to get into the fuel station. I have the impression that Costco in the US also looks very quiet when I see vlogs from there.

Glad you were able to visit your local Costco. Their corporate headquarters are just a few miles away from home. The Kirkland brand is named after the city of Kirkland across the lake from Seattle. The prices can be very competitive. LEGO at Costco is usually a good deal. The return policy is the best of any retailer. Look for items that are unique to that store’s region. Prices followed by an Asterisk is a one-time only Close-out item. Such a fun vlog of your first visit!!

I'm an American with a Costco membership. I agree with you - the food is amazing. It makes meal prep for the week pretty easy. If you look at the proce cards, you'll notice stars on some of the items. The stars indicate that the item is going away after they sell out. Some popular items come back with different packaging or other minor changes.

I've been going to Costco for years, the Kirkland brand usually means good quality at a good price. It was interesting to see the difference in food offerings in the UK vs America. There's almost always lines at the checkout but the staff are quick here.

Costco is an American gift to the world. Costco has an excellent reputation for being good to their employees, proving you can be an exemplary employer and still make a profit. I have never shopped at a Costco outside the US and this location in the UK is almost identical to the stores here in Colorado but I was mystified by the ‘qualifications’ for membership. I pay USD60 for a one-year membership and, Bob’s your uncle, I was in the door. No questions asked. I live alone so many of the massive sizes of food products make some items unreasonable but, my god, the booze is very reasonably priced and of excellent quality. Of particular mention is the Kirkland-brand Champagnes. Yes, bottled in France, it’s excellent for mimosas, a Kir Royale or an impromptu French 75. No bags at checkout but the staff are always ready with leftover cardboard boxes. Lastly, our Costco locations are infamous for the ubiquitous and plentiful free-food samples enticing members to buy that 50lb bag of pretzels. In fact, one of my friends, who is seriously rich, loves going to Costco on a Saturday morning just to try all the free stuff offered in nearly every aisle. 🤷‍♂️

In the States, Costco’s prices are ALWAYS lower than anywhere else (outside of crazy sales)… but one of the best things about Costco is that companies often package items specifically for Costco with extras that would be add ons anywhere else. We buy sheet sets there that are AMAZING. I’ve never seen them anywhere else.

I rarely see anything at Costco (in the US) that you can do a head-to-head price comparison. Of course many things are sold under the Kirkland label, but even the major-brand items always seem to be “unique” in some way, so no taking a model number and comparing.

My time these days is just too valuable to spend literally roaming around a huge, crowded, visually uninteresting, store. Like you, Hannah, I'm just exhausted watching you at the end of this vlog! Perhaps stores like Costco would have been more of a value when we had 5 people living at home, but there aren't enough incentives for me to go. I also find, that many of the food items, while reasonably priced, aren't really the best quality with many of them using inferior and even unhealthy, ingredients. I'm also at a point where I try really hard not to impulse buy, and this is what stores like this one banks on. I liked comparing the UK store/experience with the one here in the US.

My husband and I shop at Costco in the U.S. it's great for buying basics like toilet paper and paper towels. The thing is, you need the space to store it all. Also here in the U.S. a lot of us have an extra giant freezer in the garage. I lived in the U.K. in the 90's and some of my neighbor's had smaller refrigerators. As long as ypu have the space to store the big packs Costco is great for certain items.

Hannah thks for this vid, I don't shop Costco because, 1- I feel the portions are obscene, 2-Where are the shrimp sourced from? Some third world nation in Asia that uses pesticides in fish farms? 3- Really cheap chicken, pork and beef usually means factory farming with LOTS of antibiotics and insanely inhumane conditions for the animals. Cement floors, ahh no thank you, too cheap to put some tiles down? This concept is based on consumption, consumption, consumption at any cost. Not for me.

Hannah, in America, you arrive early, very early or late in the day. Shopping there can be a one stop shop - for most household items. In the US, you can purchase tires and have them serviced there while you ship, purchase gas for your car, buy a car, appliances, flooring and much more through Costco. Prices are competitive especially when you own your own business. Worth buying big so you do not have to visit a gorcery store multiple times a week. No brainer!

Another wonderful video, Hannah! Have been a Costco US member for a long time. You definitely have to shop it…there are very good deals and then some that aren’t a deal at all. The membership rules sound a little different from the US, but otherwise it seems to be very much the same. You’re a brave soul for venturing in at this time of year (I went recently and it was absolutely bonkers). I go for certain things and ignore the rest of it (I go early and try to get in and out as quickly as possible). I view it as a necessary “evil”. I joined up in my neck of the woods, when they first opened, more decades ago than I care to remember. When I go I always seem to come across something I always wanted. Great buyers I guess. The house brand Kirkland is known for it's excellent unadulterated extra virgin olive oil. The organic produce, fresh and frozen, is a favourite. Very nice cheese department too. Trouble is it's getting more and more difficult, at times, to even enter their huge parking lot. Here's looking forward to seeing you again next week, old girl. Friday, 10 AM in my time zone. Hello Hannah, I loved this video so much that I have now watched it twice! As an American, I can't get over the reasonable price of food there, but the VAT of 20% on other items is double or more of what I would pay in my area. The look on your face when you start the wrap-up in your car is priceless! Shopping is so exhausting, isn't it? This was your first time, you will get used to it. Some of the sales are amazing! I thought that different states had different sales taxes, is that incorrect? I think that the UK has a single tax for everything. I live in Portugal and we have 3 different tax percentages for different items. Most fresh food is 6% but alcohol and other non essentials items it's 23%. When we look at the prices in the supermarket it shows what you will pay with the tax, it's much easier to calculate how much you are spending before arriving at the till.

1. KS = Kirkland Signature, Costco’s own brand (named after Kirkland, Washington, USA, home of their world headquarters). From my experience, ANYTHING of this brand is of excellent quality (as good or better than any ‘name brand’ item) and I would buy without hesitation. (Quality is much higher than Sam’s Club’s ‘Members Mark’ brand.) 2. ANYTHING from Costco’s in-store bakery is of high quality and absolutely DELICIOUS! 😋 3. Depending on what you buy, it tends to work out cheaper compared to your regular supermarkets for the majority of the time. Regarding the hot dog and a drink; they sell it at a loss as the founder stated "over his dead body" will they ever increase the price. The price is practically set in stone.

Sweetie, when you go to these warehouse stores, you have to be ready to get a good workout 😂. You might go in there just to look around and spend $100.00 or more. I go because I live where there aren't any stores, so we shop for a monthly supply of goods. I enjoyed that trip with you.

I absolutely love Costco! I go every couple of weeks to buy some items in bulk. The prices are much lower at the Canadian Costco, vs regular grocery stores. I was impressed to see that you went on a weekend. I typically go during the week around 3:30-4, and it’s tolerable. I was surprised however, to see so few people in queue on a Saturday in the UK! In Canada, it’s horrendous past 10am!

Costco is great for electronics. And alcohol! 😂 Kirkland brand Vodka is 6 times distilled!!!! At Costco price, and quality is even better than GREYGOOSE. For everything else, I much prefer TARGET 🎯. Target is great!

KS vodka is Grey Goose. Kirkland is just the brand name used, all Kirkland items are made by brand names, prices are pre set.

As an American who goes to Costco at least once a week this was fascinating to watch. First off we dont have the job restrictions here, as a matter of fact out local Orlando Costco is ALWAYS packed. Also I cant get over how everything you are showing we have the same stuff here, I just wish we had the cases of London Pride:). This was a really great video!

There use to be restrictions. Same with a lot of other wholesalers, but I can't think of the last time I went to a wholesaler in either the US or Canada where they refused to allow me to buy a membership. Heck, a couple I've been to no longer even require memberships. I remember being really little in the late 80s/early 90s and having a giant list of stuff my parents would pick up for people that couldn't get memberships whenever we went shopping. It sucked.

When Costco first opened her in Oregon in the 1980’s you have to own a business or work at only certain places to get a card. We had a family business which allowed us membership but not all privileges. I still have my original card under our business name. About 10-15 years ago they issued new cards in individual family names. But it did not as a place where you had to meet 😊.

As an American I do enjoy Costco! we're a household of 2 and that is where we go for most of our shopping outside of fresh produce. it's just as packed and the people are just as aggressive as the grocery stores and/or Target. People are super aggressive out in public nowadays for some reason in America, I wish ours was as empty as yours! Waiting through the line at the end sucks but at least here they have a system down pact to shuffle everyone through very quickly. it's not a pretty or aesthetic experience but it for sure beats paying a premium for smaller-sized everyday items. If you live on your own though may not be worth it, things are just too large and I wouldn't get through it all before it expires.

Hi from S. Cal. Our Costco just got self check out stations a few years ago so that can be faster sometimes. You don't have to be a business to get the membership, btw, but they limit what credit cards they accept (Visa but not Mastercard, and Discover Card and one other). I wish ours had some of your food (Victoria Sponge!). =) The muffins are famous for being very good and inexpensive. The pizza (only choice of cheese or pepperoni) are massive and only $10. We just had both kinds at my grandson's family b-day party. =) The wine isn't that good of a deal imo. Also ours has petrol station and the gas is usually pretty cheap, so the lines for those are usually long too. You do have to know your prices to make sure you're getting a deal (otherwise, no use in buying in bulk). It's great for electronics (bought my computer there) and we've bought our tires there too in the past. Great for nice quality (and long!) beach towels in the summer, and found a set of melamine bowls with LIDS one time. =) Don't forget to freeze what you know you can't eat right away (cheese, bread, muffins, meat, pasta) to keep your savings. =) Or you can share the rest with your family.

I love Costco but I refuse to go on the weekends because it is just too crazy busy here in Florida. It’s interesting to see how different the London products are from here in the U.S. And of course the prices are crazy cheap compared to what we pay! Costco can be considered a man’s grocery store so many men like their wives to go to Costco!

Hi Hannah, nice to see a Costco vlog. I shop in Costco, if I want something in particular like a Coffee Machine for example I will always do research to check the prices. The items I buy are canned drinks, tinned tomatoes, large container of Geeta mango chutney, cat food pouches (about £5 cheaper than supermarket), bin bags, meat and fish. The individual Victoria sponge cakes are really nice, & the sandwich platters and sandwiches are also nice. You do after a while of going to Costco get a feel for what is a good deal, and what isn’t. Great vlog Hannah x

Most people think there are Costcos conveniently located for everyone in the U.S., but sadly not true. The closest one for me is 3 1/2 hours down the highway. Unless i want to cross over into Canada. Much closer mileage-wise, but that queue at the border-crossing is a bear!😂 And, I think they get you on excise taxes, too. Very convenient for bulk shopping, though. I can be snowed-in for weeks at a time (over a 7 month winter), and knowing I have a full pantry is quite comforting.

Loved the vlog Hannah! As a single woman, I don’t shop at Costco. Not worth the membership cost & the overwhelm :) It is a good place to shop for a giant food scene in a film where the look is “middle of the road” and none of the actors have to eat anything! Although those macarons were great value and I could do some fancy macaron towers on the cheap 😂 for Handmaids Tale. Have a great weekend! 💖

as an American, my personal tradition is to go to Costco the day before Thanksgiving to buy a pumpkin pie. It's so much fun and people seem to be in good moods. Last week, by 2pm, they had sold out of 1200 apple pies and didn't know how many pumpkin pies they had made $5.99!). On weekends, there are often taste tests of various foods that are on offer. The prices on the end caps can be hard to find but they are usually there somewhere.

Interesting that most of the comments are from the USA. There aren't many Costcos in the UK. Not doing much for the health of the nation are they!! Lots of fat and sugar in large packs as well. the food is only cheap if you have mouths to feed it too.Not much good for people living on their own is it, they certainly stack it high sell it cheap, not my kind of store

I’ve had a Costco membership for over 20 years. I love Costco. I didn’t know there was one in London and I’m really excited to see the London store. I but staples from Costco - paper towels, toilet paper, cat and dog food, cat litter, dishwasher tabs, detergent. I also buy appliances from Costco. Costco has the best return policy of any store - except for electronics everything is returnable at any time, even a year later. Edit: If you buy any food and you don’t like it, return it -you can in the US, I assume you could at the London store. I don’t like their pastry but I buy their fresh fruit, wine.

I work for Costco in California and love visiting different Costco’s when I travel. I visited that particular store back in June and found it very easy to check out. I don’t think it should take anyone 25 minutes to checkout normal. I have to say I loved the selection of products the store carries and wish I was there shopping. So many great things we don’t have in the US, and the quality 😍. Things change daily. The rule of thumb is to grab it when you see it, it may not be there next time.

I apologize for the American influence going to the UK! I'm an American currently living in Ireland and I am not sorry to be away from the tacky, ott, commercial Christmas decorations in the US! My Christmas mantra there was, "OMG what are they thinking?!" I do miss pumpkin pie though! And free samples in grocery stores would be the norm in America, at least it was in Chicago, especially on weekends.
