The Queen Anne will enter service with Cunard Line at the beginning of May 2024 - but we already got a first glimpse of the new cruise ship: On October 5, 2023, I was at Fincantieri in Marghera for a shipyard visit. I will take you with me to the construction site - so put on your helmet and steel-toed shoes. I have brought you many fascinating insights into a cruise ship, as you never get to see it as a passenger.
On the Queen Anne, a lot of imagination is required in this construction phase, because she is still in the shell stage, with hardly a trace of design. Sometimes a strip of a wooden panel, which is otherwise covered with protective foil, peeks out, sometimes the golden decor of a column can already be glimpsed between narrow openings in the scaffolding.
Instead, you can discover what will later be hidden behind pretty wall coverings and marvel at the basic structure of the pools and whirlpools. We are at a noisy construction site, hearing metal hitting metal, the sharp hissing sound of a welder, the shouts of shipyard workers. We see steel floors and steel walls with their welds, where two components come together.
And we understand why it makes sense to wear a helmet: Not only once do I bump into a hanging cable harness out of carelessness - or because I'm concentrating on filming - or into a supply pipe in one of the corridors that hangs down to eye level.
The video of the shipyard visit to the Queen Anne gives an insight into the construction of a cruise ship, but also a foreshadowing of what the latest Cunard cruise ship will look like in a few months when it sets off on its maiden voyage from Southampton in May 2024.
