I grew up in Mentor, Ohio. I pass this almost daily and toured it dozens of times. We know it by it's name "Lawnfield". It was closed in the 1990's when the National Park took over and did a six year $12.5 million dollar meticulous restoration. His library became the first Presidential Library established in the U.S.
I love the walk in safe and the snuggery. What unique ideas ahead of their time. What could Pres. Garfield accomplished if he had completed his presidency? Thanks for bringing this wonderful house to us.
A question we ask about him, Lincoln, and Kennedy. All of those focused on Country and People seem to be targeted and the excuses accepted ... Look deeper. "Federal Reserve Bank Corporation" (private family owners) were/are the power behind these losses.
I grew up in NE Ohio near Mentor. During my school years, the Garfield House was often an end of (school) year outing. After I moved away I recall hearing about repainting the house to period correct colors instead of plain white. It caused quite a stir. Next time I travel 'home' I would like to look at it again with more appreciative grown eyes.

I wouldn't live in a sterile, mass-produced shoebox in Manhattan if I could live afford to build and live somewhere like Garf's place. I think it's a sign of civilizational regression that modern wealthy people choose to do so as often as they do. Things are too easy; tastes are too cheap.

Loved the staircase behind the fireplace and the blue tile fireplace in the snuggery. Parts of the exterior, reminded me of Teddy Roosevelt's Sagamore Hill. Garfield was a Good man.
I've been to Garfield's home. My brother lives nearby. It is a beautiful house! I grew up a couple blocks away from Spiegel Grove which is president Hayes' estate and home. The grounds are beautiful and I walk the trails there frequently. Would love for you to visit!
I like the library. However, it has been quite a few years since I visited. Of course, if the doctors hadn't stuck their dirty fingers in his back looking for the bullet, he probably would have lived as he didn't die of the wound but the sepsis most likely caused by those fingers. Excellent video.
He and Lincoln were my heros. His suffering at the hands of his assassin was so dreadful, it brings tears to my eyes even now. He lingered for days while his ignorant doctors did their best to abuse him. Only his death brought him relief.

I live in Mentor!!! I have always loved this house!! In the early 80s I went to James A. Garfield Elementary School!! They tore it down a loooooong time ago!! Now I drive Uber Eats & I drive right by his house 20 times a day! I'm always looking at the windows for ghosts!! Haven't seen 1 yet!! 😜

It would be hard to pick just one room. It is a beautiful house, love all the wood. I never knew much about Garfield, he sounds like an impressive man. Too bad about the federal funding for public schools. I’m sure his heart was in the right place.

Perfect projection of a man to do positive things for not only his family’s well being but was elevated to office,always a hard worker to accomplish great goals,a very good president.But unfortunately it took one angry jealous man to shatter Garfield’s dreams. A disgruntled evil man that could’ve done something else positive even some where else. Glad that medical procedures have improved but losing Garfield was a tragedy, but the home he built was perfect for his family, and chose a way to be self sufficient,completely!

Garfield's house is almost indentical to my wife's house right down to the snuggary, except in her house the library is on the first floor, it has a triple brick exterior and the walkin safe is more of an armory room. My favourate room in any house is the library. Something very special about curling up in a warm blanket and a hot cup of tea with your favourite book or to just check emails on your laptop.

Shoenberger mansion in Cincinnati Ohio it’s incredible very intact and in the same neighborhood is The Windings Mansion Bishop’s Place and Probosco House a wonderful book to provide information on these houses is by Professor Walter Langsam and it’s called great houses of the queen city
There is some basis for the contention that if they’d just left the bullet alone he would have recovered and healed, but all the poking around trying to find the was what actually killed him.
I liked that the home wasn't too ostentatious, even though it was large. It looks like a family home. Another beautiful library! I notice the wood is lighter than what is often used. I wonder what kind it is. Restoration normally removes old shellac that has turned dark. It was interesting to learn he was so progressive. My maternal grandfather was from Ohio.

I will appreciate the view even more now that I know the background. The house was splendid however, the wallpaper on the ceilings was pretty busy. Was that a fashion statement or was there a practical aspect?
When someone uses violence to achieve any end we ALL suffer and are set back from the good things that could have been. He sounds as though he was a wonderful human being and President with his efforts firmly set for the American people. It must have been TERRIBLE for his family and the country. I like the upstairs library his wife built and the safe room. I think the gas and water facilities were simply amazing for the time. He could have done the country so much good….
a toss up between the snuggery (every home needs one!) or the verandas . . . most likely the verandas, if they count as a room. I've often said my veranda is my favourite room on my house.
Garfield also served as a Gospel preacher in Disciples of Christ congregations. If i recall, when he decided to run for President (or after he was elected), he told his congregation that he was stepping down from the pulpit to become President. He was apparently a very intelligent man, and could read and write Greek and Hebrew. I think he even could write with both hands at the same time. Even more, he appointed Lew Wallace to an ambassadorship because he wrote "Ben Hur". 😅. My father had several biographies of Garfield and wished more people knew about him, as he had all the markings of becoming a great President. Sadly, a nut with a gun ruined it all.

This house seems 20 years NEWER than it "should". The Exterior seems so 1905! P.S. Pittsburgh's Garfield neighborhood is named for the President. When the are was laid out in lots, The first buyer bought his lot the same day Garfield was laid to rest!
So it was Garfield that truly attempted to turn this country from the tides of slavery..(Lincoln,and Kennedy get all the credits..) Garfield and his life needs to be told showed with pictures to more ppl,continuously so the msg gets to everyone.

What a cool guy....Buuuut, 'Equal Rights' are not in the Bible, thats why he was such a breath of fresh air for the times........ And the USA was occupied by people that followed the Bible.... It says in the Bible.... "Black and White shall live next to each other but must not mix" Most Christians pass this part up... But that why if you are white and grow up in a mixed/black neighborhood, the African Americans will repeat the same verse. Any written book of religion separates the people, period.
