INSIDE Grad School Admissions - My Experience on an Admissions Board// & How to get into grad school
Applying to grad school! Getting into graduate school! Seeing it all as a member of the admissions board! If you are looking to get into grad school - possibly phd admission or a masters program admission, MBA, Law School, or even how to get into an ivy league grad school- this approach will make a big difference to get you in! Even if you're looking to get into graduate school with a low gpa or low test scores, this can overcome all of it.
FREE DOWNLOAD: Here's my "Get into Grad School Checklist" which is a cheatsheet of all the most important tips that they DON'T tell you about getting into graduate school, go here: madelinemann.c...
In this video you’ll learn about grad school admissions from the inside - how admissions committees make decisions, and most importantly, how to get in. This video will have nothing to do with your GPA or test scores - there is a lot more to getting into grad school than that. I’ll walk you through 4 insights and tips that will increase your chances of getting accepted.
We will talk about:
What small grad programs value most in the application process
How to research and choose the right program
How to write your best Statement of Purpose
And two ZERO talent things (seriously...a small child could do these things) that dramatically increase the odds that you will be accepted

Thank you so much! Honestly, it’s so hard to apply for graduate school when none of your friends are applying and your parents only have a high school degree...from another country. I’m so thankful to have found this. I can say that in my first attempt to apply to graduate school I naively committed all the no-no’s you mentioned. But at least now I know. Here’s to round two!

Good luck!! I am a first generation student I had NO idea what I was doing. The first round of applying I rushed and applied to programs I thought were the "best", not programs that matched my interests. Not suprisingly, they all denied me. I didn't give up. I did my research on almost every PhD program (in my field) in the country! I realized which programs were a great match for me, I applied, and I have received more than one offer of admission! Do not give up round one! :) these tips she's mentioning here are great

Great tips! It's harder to find graduate school tips so this was amazing. And I'm glad to hear that the essay portion isn't about your full life story and character progression, but rather why you want to be an academic with the school, or else I would feel like I am just fluffing myself up for something else. I have a question regarding the application process for international applicants. I hear that international applicants are generally accepted at around a 2:1 ratio from local students to international ones. What tips would you give such international students. I am currently a year 2 university student in Hong Kong and am looking to go to the United States to directly pursue a PhD from my Bachelors of Engineering in Computer Science.
@SelfMadeMillennial
@SelfMadeMillennial 5 лет назад
The advice from this video is the same for domestic and international students. I'm not sure where the stat you mentioned came from and what it entails so I cannot speak to it. I will say it can be confusing how the credits of programs transfer internationally, so that is a challenge to overcome, and the other is to be proficient enough in English to convey your ideas in your statement of purpose, but it looks like that won't be an issue for you.

Most PhD programs requires a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on the 4.0 Scale, so you should convert your CGPA to 4.0 to determine if you meet the requirement and if not. Work harder you still have a couple of years.

WAIT, I'm a little lost... So mentioning that your goal is to get a PhD and being passionate about research will disqualify you from entering Grad School? Where one goes to go get their PhD? Does not compute. Why is aspiring to earn a PhD from a PhD granting institution disqualify you from entering a PhD program with that PhD school? I don't follow....

I have a 2.9 and every grad school so far want at least a 3.0. In college I was doing very well with the work for 99% of my courses. The reason why I ended up with low letter grades was because of my then-undiagnosed ADD. I'm working on managing the organization and time management issues that caused my GPA to be so low. I'm really worried I won't be accepted into any schools.
@emilydupuis1347

I hope you see this, the grad school I’m applying to is the same university where I am getting my BA, I added a “track” my major which added courses related to what I want to study for my masters, I have a 4.0, I am in honor societies, the only issue is I’m an online student now and have little contact with professors. I need three letters of recommendations. I am hoping my supervisor and teacher I’ve known since high school will write one, but it’s not likely my last recommendation will be a professor. Is this going to be a problem? Do admissions pay attention to the profession of the person who wrote the letter? Hoping to hear back, sorry for the length!

These tips are valuable. I had a low undergraduate GPA and was on academic probation for a brief time. This video helped me get into a top-notch graduate program (Georgetown) on my second attempt. Research the programs thoroughly and visualize how your intellectual interests align with the goals of the program. I’ve heard stories of Ivy League caliber graduates with stronger resumes getting rejected because they failed to communicate their professional ambitions in their application statements. This will give you the edge. If you were waitlisted or rejected and have thoughts on reapplying, these valuable tips will catch the eye of the admissions office. You might get accepted after waiting out a semester.

Hi, I have a question about follow-up email after an interview: I sent a thank you email after an interview and the school responded with bunch of program materials to looks at (they said it's sth they send out to everyone who interviewed). And I'm trying to ask questions that I got while looking through the materials to show continued interest via email. I'm wondering if it's weird/rude to ask if they have any concern/area for improvement that might make them hesitant in accepting me? I've heard this is one of a good example question to ask at a job interview setting, but not sure it also applies to grad school interviews, especially via email. I'd really appreciate your input on this!

What kind of questions should I ask when I call the program?
@peterwashington8169
@peterwashington8169 4 года назад
You should reach out to professors of interest, not the program (assuming for PhD). More info here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oqwTj1GUsmw.html You can also as me more questions at twitter.com/peter_washing - from a current Stanford PhD student

What if you’re on a waitlist for a phd program?

What did the program say when you called them?

Self Made Millennial They emailed me to say I’m on their waitlist. Then they asked me to let them know if I’ve committed to another school. That’s about it. Any advice would be awesome, thank you!

Give them a call and ask if there is anything else you can provide to help with their consideration. Even if they say nothing, you calling shows demonstrated interest

Great video! I am a computer scientist that specializes in cyber security. My aim is to be a cryptologist, will it help if I teach myself subjects that focus on this specific career? The place I want to apply has a variety of job opportunities, including the one I stated above. A lot of undergrad does not teach cryptology. If you can get back to my comment that would be awesome!

Ralph Ruiz cryptology is so cool! I worked in blockchain for years and have seen that your desired skill set is in demand! Are you asking if you should teach yourself skills in lieu of getting a graduate degree?

Self Made Millennial I wanted to know if it would help if I knew a little bit of it, or if i had experience with it to increase my chances into getting into grad school.
@SelfMadeMillennial

Ralph Ruiz yes that would likely increase the odds that you would get in.

Hi, Madeline Mann, I came across your impressive recruiting experience on Linked-in, and would like to formally invite you to join our info mission in late September as an admission expert either by contracting or paid consulting. As you might have heard, it has become tricky for Chinese students to make up their mind continuing their graduate studies here in U.S. in this special circumstance. They might worry about whether the Covid-19 and complex international situations at the moment, would affect the admission rate they would be admitted. They would also need some fresh eyes on what programs might be a good fit and what they should do for preparation. We look forward to passing on a positive attitude and hope during the Covid-19 crisis, sharing information/experiences, and recommending suitable programs to more than 200 prospective Chinese students in the info session we are hosting. Please let me know if you are interested in this or any other kinds of collaboration, and feel free to ask me any questions. BTW i also asked for adding in Linked-in, hope I get get through and discuss more about it Thank you!
