The 3DS remake adds something to the Barinade boss that redefines what you've dealt with throughout the dungeon. Its three anchor points that it's been using to feed off of Jabu-Jabu are colored red, blue, and green. You don't have to sever them in red, blue, green order or anything, but it just sends the message that those tentacles you severed, plus the obstacles they were part of, were ultimately part of Barinade.
Am I the only one who didn't get grossed out when playing this dungeon? I was too mesmerized by the movements of the walls and annoyed at Ruto to actually think that I was in the guts of a fish XD
Definitely the hardest of the three starter dungeons, the enemies are much more annoying in this one, I think. The room where the timer goes on is an added challenge and the general dungeon layout seems more confusing. I find it cool that the area where you get all the main items looks like an artery - a clever detail considering you are inside the body of a giant fish.
I really like the headphone analogy, and it explains why I've always been so fond of Jabu Jabu. It feels so satisfying to slowly unravel the dungeon almost like a puzzle box, instead of just searching the dungeon for a boss key. I feel similarly towards the Forest Temple
I was never disgusted by the interior of the dungeon, but I was definitely freaked out when I first played. Realizing I’m truly playing inside of a huge fish was so odd. Going through a dungeon inside a tree is def something I can wrap my head around
3:35 I always thought it was just magic that made link travel from Zora's Domain to Lake Hylia that fast. Remember, we don't Zora's submerged in the water for too long, so they might be able to last under water that long either
Keep sh***ing on owl buddy please, it gives me life, and your reasoning is totally valid 😂 Another great video!! I absolutely love how icky this dungeon is, and I also realized while watching the video that I never found this dungeon icky... RIP the nurse 😝 I love your earbud analogy, and again, your analysis is spot on. So much great nostalgia, looking forward to the next!
Thanks T!! Your comments always make me smile. Yeah the owl is just TOO MUCH sometimes. Otherwise yeah the dungeon is great. Regarding the ick factor, I never recall finding it gross as a kid, but replaying it as an adult, yeah it’s totally nasty. Maybe I’ve just gotten squeamish over time.
Love this series cappin. Cant wait til you get to the water temple and the screen is black with white font for 16 mins saying "sorry footage was corrupted" while you narrate it like normal hahahaha love you my friend!
notes on barinade the little jelly fish are biri the bigger ones with teeth that look like metroids are bari and then theres barinade i dont think the biri are actually a part of barinade i think its more of a relationship then just being parts of it and an interesting note about barinade in oot3d each of the three parasitic tentacles you cut down are colored red green and blue if you look at the tentacles that are burrowed into the roof above barinade same tentacles i think this might be the first time in zelda when you can see the dungeons boss in other rooms?
Man I never knew the owl told you to play Zelda’s Lullaby. I played that part of the game as an Illiterate child(I was 4 and didn’t learn till I was 5) so I had my dad read the waterfall sign for me. I never noticed it on repeat play throughs because I skip his dialogue
Poor Kaepora Gaebora. He means well, but is easily one of the most annoying parts of an otherwise fantastic game. As for the dungeon itself, echoing what you and others have said here, this is definitely the most unique and challenging of the child dungeons, even if it's personally not my favourite one in the game. The animated textures on the insides of Jabu-Jabu must have been really impressive for the time, and Barinade is certainly a step up from the previous two bosses in terms of difficulty and appearance. Like, what even is it? Princess Ruto is definitely the worst part of this dungeon. She's annoying and, unlike Kaepora Gaebora, not exactly likeable. At least she becomes much more tolerable later on. Easier on the ears (figuratively speaking of course, given the lack of voice acting) and the eyes as well, if you know what I'm saying. To this day, I'm kinda surprised she managed to become a playable character in Hyrule Warriors, but I digress. Looking forward to watching your analyses of the adult dungeons!
About the owl... I'm currently makimg a very non-linear game. In testing... you'd be surprised how dense+unobservant players can be. Things they were told once (or even twice) they may well forget. Something like a plaque or a sign they might not always click on. I'm having to restructure the first level right now because a significant portion of testers are failing to act on information they were given in the opening cutscene.
The design of this dungeon is quite confusing to me in regards to the inside of a living creature and it makes me wonder how Jabu-Jabu's digestive system even works. It is quite a unique dungeon from the other ones with the switches and doors. It makes sense that they would make them unique for this dungeon.
i always liked the animation of barinade's destruction. there is a sense of relief when destroying a parasite like that. also i think this is the most underrated dungeon in OoT. my biggest disappointments are that it is geometrically small and the tentacle rooms are repetitive. i also really like the aesthetic in this dungeon especially how hitting the walls has an organic nature to it. i get breath of fire 2 vibes from this dungeon like entering the whale.
i like this dungeon. it is short but i do like the navigational theme it has with ruto which is similar to eagle's tower from link's awakening. also i like the aesthetic. reminds me of the whale from breath of fire 2.
Thank you very much. I had to watch the video cause i lost my progress in the game because I had been playing it on my Android, and you can't save your progress to Mupen on pc unless you get the full version. tbh this level was freaking me out so badly, I didn't even think about how gross it was. It was legitimately giving me nightmares X3. This video helped to finish this part of the game, cause I haven't been able to get it out of my mind (and dreams) since. Also, I had no idea you could carry princess Ruto!!! I always thought that I had to open a meat door for her to go through or to bring her some kind of item, never even considering using her as a weapon! I feel alot more relieved now and maybe I'll even try playing the Legend of Zelda Ocarina again using Mupen on pc. Gosh, that boomerang is neat too. Just a shame I'll have to restart. Thanks again for this great tutorial and gameplan!
Hahaha I’m glad. Initially in my script I had only maybe 1 or 2 jokes but as I was recording and editing I decided to run a bit a further with it. It felt right.
I can't what I hate more....Big Octo or the Gekko in Great Bay Temple. At least HOW to beat the Gekko is obvious, I simply never figured out how deal with this miniboss without taking a hit. It's like the cueball miniboss from links awakening, only if the universe HATES you
Playing Oot with my friends today (Who quickly declared that it would be my Job to do this one and the water Temple) Though it's gross I really had fun with this one. After more than 12 years not playing this game I really don't have all of the Details memorized. And this was the first dungeon that was interesting. It has good puzzles though Ruto and the enemies are annoying. And the grossness is kind of fascinating, the design is just so out there and I love it for that. Not like Dodongos cavern, which has a very generic cave/mine (I've seen better cave and better mine designs) *Paper Mario64 has a much better designed lava/volcanic-dungeon for example. I know it's a different style and a game that came later and is known for having aged much better than most N64s games visually and in general. Like it or not-This one is far from generic! But I know this is very subjective.
I’m guessing that green fluid is not water that is clearly stomach acid maybe that’s the reason why she disappears is Linke invincible to the stomach acid?
From what I've heard, this is considered by many THE WORST DUNGEON in Ocarina of Time, more than the water temple. If I had to guess why it would be because being prone to waste your time with one-way pathways which comboes horribly with being a labyrinth dungeon, being an escort mission of an obnoxious brat, enemies who force you to camp and being just gross.
I always hated that damned owl. And I never liked Ruto either but I always thought she was kinda funny too Never understood why she disappeared when dropped in water but times like these I just sigh and say “it’s just an old game at the end of the day” plus they still do stuff like this low key it’s funny lol And wow I never realized Link gets tricked into getting married till now that’s actually funny as hell this is why I like ruto she’s like “ok let’s get married!” Funny girl. Always thought Zora were quite eccentric and weird in that game
for sure one of the lesser liked dungeons in this game, the least actually, if i replay the game this one is the one i dread the most, far more than the water temple that has a worser reputation than it deserves, not saying the complaints are not valid as they are but over certainly too negative
