Japan is home to some of the most beautiful roads and paths I have ever seen in my life. Along the Nakasendo Trail, there are towns called Shukuba, or 'Post Towns'. They are stunningly beautiful from start to finish, and this is what they look like. Today, we take a walk through Narai Juku, and Tsumago Juku.

I am so happy that I could finally make it here after all these years... and bring you along!! What did you think? Would you visit these towns? So a bit of an announcement: The Unnamed Adventure II - The Ways We Almost Died will be coming out THIS month!! As a full-feature 30+ Minute Video This will be available for the Full Adventurers tier over on the Tokyo Lens Patreon! (linked in the description~) I'd love to have you over there!

Looks like an interesting and beautiful place. That little hidden path may be describable as being like something out of Totoro but the whole town looks like something out of a Ghibli movie. I like the way that it looks in the rain, very green with little paths and stone stairs looking like they have almost spontaneously formed out of the landscape. Looking forward to the upcoming video release on Patreon 😜

Aloha Norm, I really enjoy vicariously living & seeing Japan & the world with you! I feel that I'm growing as a person, through the experience of understanding more about other people, & their homes, places they live, & feel sacred about. I feel it is important to learn what brings people to happiness, & those things that matter to them & also to you! Mahalo nui for sharing hope & bringing some life back into my world & our world.( I spend many days in bed & still hoping for surgery.) Think of you often, take care, Kai

My husband and I had our first trip to Japan in 2018 which was so amazing. We were there for three weeks and one of the things we made sure to do was walk the Nakasendō trail from Magome-juku to Tsumago-juku. Walking this trail and getting to see the beautiful post towns is honestly one of the biggest highlights of our trip. The scenery of the area was just absolutely gorgeous!

My bf and I hiked the Nakasendo Trail from Magome to Tsumago two years ago - I read many blogs beforehand saying that this route was quite easy but the first part I was doubting myself so hard because it just seemed uphill forever! Then this elderly lady came out of her home, said "Konnichiwa", saw that we were exhausted foreigners, and then made a hand motion gesturing that just a little bit more and everything would be downhill from there. To this day we are very thankful that woman came out to greet us - we don't know if it was just a coincidence or if she was sitting by her window, ready for tired tourists to come by lol. But she gave us the push we needed and helped us enjoy the stunning trail. I LOVED the back-in-time vibe of the towns and would 100% do it again! Also your filmography is A+++++ as usual :)

Honestly, this was the first video I ever watched about Japan. I already knew I wanted to go there, but it was not until I watched this video and kept searching for more Japan content, that I truly made the decision. I have been binge watching your videos all over again just to leave you comments and I really wanted to comment on this one, but I could only remember bits of the video (the rain, your umbrella, minute 2:49, the snake, and you taking the stairs), so I just spent the last 45 minutes looking for it haha! I went there a couple years ago with my highschool host family. We did a little tour with a Japanese lady, and we visited different houses and learned about the history. There’s a house that is black on the inside from 200-300 years of smoke, and every day, the ladies rub the smoke in the ceiling wood to make it shiny, it’s very interesting. There’s also another house with a small pond, and the japanese emperor visited that house i think 300 years ago. It was very cool. There is a nikuman/ steamed pork bun shop in that town owned by an old couple, and they make the best nikuman I’ve ever had 😋 Next time you go back there, you should do the little tour. Every place is beautiful if you take care of cleanliness and good planning like this town here

2nd comment, the pittter patter of the rain on the hard smooth wood accompanied by the melodic piano track just sounds so serene. It really adds life to the monotone colour pallett. Beautiful, thanks for taking the shots you do Norm

Actually I visited Japan three times next time I plan to use a and the postal service to send my luggage from hotel to the next. The post town from Kyoto to Edo are for months very high on my list. Even if my heart always bring me back to Izumo Taisha and the place just behind the main shrine where the main Kami is enshirned. Being there very early in the morning when the birds are singing and the stone rabbits admire the shrine just makes me smile every time. But the post town and the small villages define preserved the beauty of the country. Just love it.

Wow, this place looks sooo beautiful. Got to be one of my favourite places I've seen on video.
