The definition of the strong, simple type of person. I wish I was old enough to see him play live.
@seankennedy18

Simple in the long run. Fact is he went into banking after his career and was a big time businessman. He parlayed the money he made his a player, into a very successful career. He couldn't live like he does, with the pittance that Billy Sullivan was willing to pay him.

I met Mr Hannah as a kid in about 1978. It was then that I got a true sense of the size and stature of the men that play this game. John more so than 75% of the players. He’d still be one of the greatest if he had played in this modern era.

He wasn't the player that he was in the 86 Super Bowl. His knees especially the one was bone on bone and his shoulder. Yet he still battled through. Mike Ditka pissed me off as I remember him mocking John after the game about his best offensive lineman ever status saying the Fridge man handled him. John should of laid Ditka out. John brought joy and some great teams to a awful Patriots orginization by the weasel Sulivans. You are a Patriot and a big part of what they have become. Toughness, work ethic and a passion to win!!

He was a pro bowler from day one to the day he left after the 1986 SB. He had hurt his shoulder that season and said if he "couldn't play like John Hannah" he would never play another down. They failed to mention the fact that he went into banking and business after he was a Patriot and was highly successful making FAR more money than he ever did as a football player. He actually had to BEG Billy Sullivan in the 1980s to pay him a mere $50,000 a year. He could have made more money on other teams and any team in the NFL would have had him. He was a loyal Patriot. God bless the hard working John Hannah's of the world.

Grew up watching the Pats and going to Foxboro a lot (tickets were dirt cheap, got kicked out one time and bought tickets again before half time...). Just a pleasure to watch and learn. Went from a tackle in HS to a guard in college, when you pull like the bull you know the train. I was stationed in AL two times as a Soldier, looking to back again as an old man.

I love gronk but Hannah is still 2nd best player we ever had despite all of the success since 94 . It took a Tom Brady to surpass him...the ol had to block back then too and could not hold like now so can u imagine if hog was allowed to hold? The patriots offensive line was probably best in NFL from 76 to 78 with Leon Gray, lenkaitis, Sam Adams, russ Francis, Hannah, Shelby Jordan and they set a rushing record that stood for over 40 years.

If you know an offensive linesman's name, it's usually not a good thing because he'll get one holding penalty after another or didn't block well enough. This man is the prime exception of that and did everything right, even while playing for often lousy Patriots teams.

@@seankennedy18 some of these lardass ol are 330 pounds but 40 of it is in their stomach unlike in 80s when they were leaner . Hannah was actually a great athlete with quick feet, speed and of course power ....he played with 2 torn rotator cuffs and a bad knee in 85 sb season , legendary toughness . He would work himself into a rage by game time and even his own teammates were afraid of him . I remember a coach telling a db to go out of bounds against hannah because he would rather give up a td than have a dead safety ....hog had a big enough frame to get up to 290 pounds in today's game.
