Inside Life and Tragic Final Years of 'The Fugitive' Star David Janssen.
David Janssen was an American actor, best known for his role as Dr. Richard Kimble in the TV series "The Fugitive". Born in 1931, Janssen began his career in entertainment as a child model and later worked as a radio announcer. He made his film debut in 1952 and went on to appear in numerous movies and television shows throughout his career. However, it was his portrayal of the fugitive Dr. Kimble that brought him widespread recognition and critical acclaim. Janssen was known for his intense and brooding screen presence, and his work in "The Fugitive" helped to pave the way for the development of the modern TV drama. He passed away in 1980 at the age of 48, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most iconic actors of his generation.

Lt. Gerard's obsession to capture Dr Richard Kimble made these two characters in the Fugitive series like cat and mouse chase until the end when both Gerard and Kimble caught the one-armed man as the real killer. Good acting by David Jansen (Dr Richard Kimble) and Barry Morse (Lt. Gerard).

Who could ever forget the final Fugitive episode, when they finally got the one armed man to confess to the murder, and Gerard gives Kimble the gun. That horrific fight on the top of the amusement park ride, and the climax when Gerard shoots the one armed man dead. OMG, it was a national sensation and the entire country tuned in.

My Dad loved "The Fugitive", but he said that at the end of the final episode, it would have been perfect if a dozen or so law enforcement officers from several states had showed up to arrest Kimble for the various crimes he committed while on the run. The IRS would have been after him as well for all of the fake names that he used to get jobs!

I think he was a great actor in "The Fugitive".. Lots of actors back then smoked or drank alcohol , not realizing that it would eventually catch up with them..He always displayed a calm demeanor in the series, "The Fugitive".. He was a very good actor*.. 💯💖💞👍👌✌️🎥🎬😊⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐✝️🇺🇸

I watched The Fugitive as a kid in the 1960s. I don’t remember much, only that I felt sad for Richard Kimble. I just watched the remake of The Fugitive with Harrison Ford (one of my favorite films) and started thinking about the original tv series. I have to say that Janssen’s work ethic, combined with heavy use of alcohol and cigarettes aged him well past his actual age of 48. But back then, just about everybody smoked and drank in Hollywood. Considering the insane hours he worked, it’s not surprising he found relief in cigarettes and alcohol. Today’s overworked actors either do drugs and alcohol, or go the other route and become health nuts. The latter seems a better choice; they’ll certainly live longer and extend their career as well.

I think it's due to his earlier athletic merits. And boyish, shy on screen presence made him a hit, especially as Kimble. A human torch that burned so brightly and so quickly... x

@@Stiffd1 I think being very shy and working in a field that puts you in the spotlight is a peculiar stress in itself. I know Paul Newman was very introverted and used alcohol just to function normally around cast and crew. When he finally quit drinking (or cut back; I don’t know if he ever fully quit) it was noted that he pretty much stayed in his trailer on set.

@@karenharris722 I had a great uncle that was a chain smoker. He got emphysema from it. I had terrible asthma, and from my child’s viewpoint it seemed to me he was perpetually in the throes of an asthma attack. He died when I was about seven years old. He was addicted right up to his death. I never had any desire to smoke because of that.

Cigarettes don’t kill everyone at 48 but 4 packs a day is more than excessive. He was reportedly a heavy drinker which will age a person dramatically. He looked 68 instead of 48 before he died.

I enjoyed The Fugitive and saw most of the b&w episodes on British TV reruns in the 80's. I never saw any of the colour episodes so I still haven't seen the concluding episodes.

The Fugitive was on CBS. Harry O on ABC. Harry O was canceled too soon. Probably because of the annoying Lt Trench, and also that crappy sports car they gave Harry to drive. Mannix got a good car. Details make a difference. Jannsen was a good actor.
