Unrelated, but I had experienced something similar with Lih Ling during the construction of Kuala Lumpur's first MRT line. I watched the workers mapped the official geographical markers and then reroute the existing electrical and telephone line, close roads and reroute traffic, buildings demolished and the first pillar erected in my town. I watched everyday the crossings being laid down between the pillars. I watched they dig up the access tunnels and the arrival of the tunnel boring machines and then years later watched the breakthrough of those tunnel boring machines streaming live. I watched the completion of one station after another and then finally when they opened up the line, got a ride on those trains. It was strangely close to my heart. I can't imagine the sense of satisfaction to actually be involved in the project itself let alone be there in the beginning till the end. Lih Ling and those involved in these kind of projects must be really proud.
Same also here working with rolling stock production for MRT SSP Line..working on the assembly line starting from receiving body frame until delivery to the depot..from nothing to something to be a proud..will glad to see public use our product

The last time I was in London I always thought the stations were very clean. However, my reference is New York so anything that isn't crawling with rats or flooding with water is great to me lol

I’m not a conspiracy guy - at all - but I do believe the public transportation conspiracy, because it actually happened. The US led the world in public transport, light and heavy rail absolutely everywhere, in basically every city. US automakers bought these light rail lines, shut the down, and ripped them up, so that they could sell more cars and implement crippled bus services, which they also made, and deliberately made the service so bad that people were forced into cars that they made. The sooner the US auto industry dies, the better the country will be. These companies have directly contributed to the crippling of US infrastructure, and have directly contributed to destroying the environment and harming and killing people with leaded fuel. When the US implemented the leaded fuel ban, US automakers hired lawyers to lobby to not change anything. Japanese automakers hired engineers to help make a better product. This is why your auto industry is dying, because there are better cars made by better run companies. I absolutely love cars, but I also love seeing more public transport, because better public transport means better everything, including roads and traffic. But as long as Agent Orange is in power, and as long as Congress is made up of out of touch octogenarians, the country will never improve. Seriously guys, you need to stop drinking the kool-aid. Start putting the interests of your country first, instead of the interests of a few old billionaires.
The city of Boston MA. can't connect two terminals 2 miles apart in 120 years. It would take that long just to figure out a plan and then drop the project after spending millions in surveys. They can't keep new trains running . Everything is built to not kill the job so even something new like the O'Neill tunnel was falling apart before the first vehicle drove through.
Fantastic, can't wait for this, the London underground is really one of the most intricate and sophisticated in the world. Kudos to the designers and engineers of this massive project.
When the Sydney Harbour Bridge was being constructed, it was mired in controversy. Don't get started on the Sydney Opera House. Read your history on the Canadian Rocky Mountain Railway. Difficult things are difficult, and they are expensive. But the best time to build them is NOW. Imagine if UK had incorporated trams, cycleways and much more metro line into its visionary underground concept? Yes a lot of so called wasted money they would have said; and stations where nobody lives they would have said. BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME.

I’ve seen first hand how good these construction projects are in London. There’s always something new constructed or some refurbishment that’s always happening to the London overground rail and the tube network. They often have to contend with small spaces and have to have less to no disruption to schedules. The pace and quality of the work these guys do are just astonishing to say the least. The cross rail is a great example: it’s mind boggling how quickly it is being built, especially given the complexity and constraints. Kudos!!
@@ihateeveryoneofyou That may be true, but you have to acknowledge that there're so many unknowns that you can't accurately predict. Very often, there are also political influences over these projects that project managers have no say or control over. 6, or even 12, months delay in the grand scheme of things is, I'd say, nothing. I have lived in London, New York, Washington DC, Dublin, Bangalore, Chennai and I can say without a doubt that London is miles ahead when it comes to infrastructure projects.

Very little is finished on time in London and while it is partially down to politics, a lot of the time it's because they intentionally understate how much time something will take to encourage advance investment. Crossrail for example was meant to have been done almost 3 years ago and a lot of people bought or rented property in the areas around new stations expecting to recoup their investment once the line opened. With the exception of the major high street chains, the vast majority of those investments have been an unaffordable waste of money.
@SamWeller comparing the Victorian Era to now is moronic. People didn't invest substancial sums of money to build shops and other utilities around trainstations. The trainstations were built near the shops and utilities. Nowadays people invest into property nearby new infrastructure projects expecting to begin profiting as soon as it opens. Except they don't open for literally years and small buisiness owners go bankrupt waiting.

Isn’t this the aim of Northern Powerhouse? The fact is that the need for a cross rail-esc system in a city such as Manchester simply is not as prevalent as in London where the economy is 8 times larger. It’s a question of where is the largest net gain for installation. However it would benefit the entirety of the U.K. greatly if it could simply connect North and South and the North to the rest of the North to increase the commuter zone around large northern cities
Seems like UK has the same problem as we have in China......? People from the Hebei(the region encircles Beijing) always complain about good resources and investments coming into Beijing but not bringing benefits to Hebei.
I don't know what's wrong with these politicians. There's so much potential especially in the north to bring in a new wave of super hi-end tech-research-manufacturing for the world (AI, quantum computing) to lead the world in this area and they just restrict their perspective to London. No wonder productivity has been so low for so long.
@@standardprocedure7017 You know this is being created because of the Greater London Council, not the Parliament so it mainly comes out of the tax of Londoners and private companies, some was funded by the government but thats to be expected to upgrade a system that is over 150 years old
A simple way to fix this would be some legislation that states that any contractor who delivers either above budget or behind schedule loses the ability to bid for the next project unless they can clearly show that the overspend or overrun was unforseeable. Of course this would be a sensible thing to do and so has no place in politics.
Rob Fraser This puts all of the risk onto the contractor without any concern for what is actually driving the risk. In the real world, project owners always create a process with contractors to vary the project and contractors will rightly want to get more money for every variance that raises their costs.
Rob Fraser The main reason for overspends and overruns is that civil engineering in the U.K. is mired in corruption. Public officials routinely request backhanders for the granting of big money contracts. All this gets added to the cost. It's effectively stealing from the public purse.

@@HoveringAboveMyself to be fair though, many large US cities have fairly robust local transportation infrastructure. I live in DC and the metro here is old and has it's problems, but is still a pretty robust and impressive piece of transportation infrastructure that is about to add a bunch new stations. It's rather in long distance rail transportation we fall behind I think. Many local rail systems in rich cities seem fine enough.
I’m just happy I can see progress, as someone that lives in woolwich and commutes to central London this is huge for me, good to see that good headway is being made and props to all the engineers who have worked hard to make this happen, hope to ride the Elizabeth line in the near future

The way London's infrastructure is progressing is amazing, and beyond comparison with any other city in the world. I use to live in London in the 1990s and have been there many times in the last two decades - and every few years there is something new to see. It already had the largest and oldest underground system back then, now it's even bigger.
One word AWESOME. I've been following this since the beginning and frankly I'm amazed you've built it for under 20bn. Its a mammoth, complicated project and all of you are to be commended for your hard work. Role on HS2 lets get this country firmly into the 21st century.
They want to but there isn't much room on the old platforms. It exists already in a few London stations though, the jubilee line for example. Anti accident or suicide

Yhhh I think the stations should have been more like this tbh. Terminate at Bromley Central. Go through Beckenham, Crystal Palace, Forest Hill, Crofton Park, Depford, Bermondsey, City of London and then through South West through Clapham North, Earlsfield, Wimbledon, Sutton Common and terminate at Sutton Station
I think one of the reasons there's fewer lines in the south is the ground is more difficult and expensive to tunnel in. It's mostly clay in the north so it holds it's shape nicely when boring through, with less water getting through. It's more gravelly in the south so you need more supports while boring and more concrete to line the tunnels to reduce water ingress. The south in general is rather neglected though. They'll use the excuse there's less stuff down there to link up, which in turn means less things will be there that need linking, ignoring the stuff and people there already lol. It's a cycle. You see it in the bigger picture with projects and funding outside of London itself compared to the rest of the country.

There's money in many industries - she could earn the same if not more working as a lawyer, investment banker, surgeon etc. Not everything is about money, and I'm sure she enjoys her job for more reasons than some arbitrary numbers on a paycheck.

I'm an Australian quadriplegic who travelled to London 4 years ago, I loved my time there but its railway system was some of the least accessible I've ever come across. The people were lovely and even lifted me up a large flight of stairs on more than one occassion.
Actually, 2bn overspend is a bargain ... this is once in lifetime civil engineering project. Also, the initial budget was based on some plan & design which was subsequently revised more than a few time due to practical reasons, that's increase cost. As an accountant in civil engineering company (directly involved in Crossrail projects) know very well that comparing to a similar project in other countries Cross Rail is a bargain.
Is a cost engineer an adviser to the project manager, or subordinate to the project sponsors? Many large projects fall victim to 'scope creep', which is a flowery term for changes in design and project objectives.

Very interesting project! I guess it will be interesting with the construction of the 2nd trunk line on the subway system in the Bavarian capital city of Munich, which goes along with the reconstruction of Central Station At least they managed it in London, unlike in the city of Regensburg, Free State of Bavaria, Germany: public transport purely relies on buses and as the ancient Stone Bridge had to be closed down for bus traffic due to damages, they thought about building a public transit tunnel or another bridge ... never got realized, cheapest alternativ was to adapt some bus stop signs on another existing bridge
@@loomnatinoscopers well the circumstances are far from easy in that city, hardly a chance to to actually do sth different than they did: there are only very few river crossings for vehicles, no real space for further river crossings to be built, and large digging projects in a historically very interesting city usually lead to long lasting archaeological excavations
Saw this from my RU-vid recommendation! I wish the SF Bay Area (and the USA as a whole) actually cared for infrastructure - I was blown away at relatively maintained London's tube was during my trip.
I'm amazed by the glass/Lucite wall along the platform. It has to withstand the air pressure changes caused by trains arriving and departing, I wish most commuter railways had something like that - here in New York, people routinely fall off the platform onto the tracks, and are injured by landing on the rails or occasionally by a moving train. Last year a friend of mine who's a train operator for the Transit Authority saw a woman about to jump in front of his train. He stopped it in time, climbed out and helped the woman get back up onto the platform, where other travelers called emergency services for her. If there were barriers along the edge of the platform, that kind of thing couldn't happen.
Actually the designers of the stations thought about the pressure change issue. At the entrance to each platform there is a pressure release shaft above the track which means the platform screen does not have to withstand such an extreme pressure change.
Does it have to be a full wall? Some stations in Japan and Singapore just have a small waist-high barrier to prevent people from falling through (intentionally or otherwise)

Monarchism is just a remnant of the past and its true form is long dead and defunct but its contemporary form is just there cause it doesn't hurt anyone to pretend to love whoever the current monarch is and also people don't like change. It would feel weird to suddenly stop having a queen or a king and their removal would have to be with force and at the end of the day it would be all for nothing given that you literally wouldn't achieve anything besides having to bow down to a new president. I live in the United States and based on what I've seen of the tube stations and some of the transportation infrastructure it looks like they used the same general architectural design and just really upgraded it it's a lot brighter the tiles of the used in the ceilings are fabulous I really love the look of the new kind of arches that they have it the fact it's a high speed train are going through the largest city in the UK as a really big deal
its also one of the worlds most complicated cities to tunnel underneath. Anybody who lived & commuted in London during Crossrail’s consultation phase will know & remember from the papers we used to read on the tube how complex it was to build this, essentially drilling a new high speed line underneath a central city’s core without disruption above or to existing lines while adding connection points & electric power, interchanges, etc. the delays and budget overrun are (& were) expected. this project will lead them well into the future & return tangible & intangible benefits to the economy many times over. My hat’s off to the consult, engineering, ministerial & physical labour teams who pulled this off. IIRC TCR / Holborn Station area was the most complex to do due to the existing infrasfructure around it.
The Crossrail project sometimes feels like yet another example of the sunken cost fallacy, but videos like this prove that it's an amazing project that will have a huge impact for London. Brilliant work @B1M
Platforms are huge so long it is amazing .... quality is just out of this world ....I looking forward to using it and the next big project is grand Paris express , hope the quality of it will be like the Elizabeth line

I work for company that designed and manufactured most of the lighting in the stations. crazy to see workers installing and wiring the things I've built
I hope it won’t be much longer. I mean, a lot of it already looks ready now. Any longer and I’ll end up damaging the parts they’ve already put in. I’m really not a fan of modern age architectural interior designs, but I can still appreciate the work they put into the tunnelling and platforms here. It’s just the stations that really need improving.
The BBC have an ongoing series on Crossrail. They have entire hours on what was done to shore up 17th century buildings right over the shafts. It took years just to plan the logistics of road closures and how to insert the new station under the junction of Tottenham Court and Oxford Street. It's a project multiple times the scale of the Channel Tunnel. I think it will last a lot longer than 120 years and will revolutionise London. The name Elizabeth will be to the 22nd century as the name Victoria is to us.

Here in the bay are it took the city 15 YEARS and 6 BILLION to build one little bart station and a 4 mile extension connecting it. The power of non corrupt officials and municipal priorities can be seen in other places
It's more of a cost problem in US. Construction workers get paid like x5 times more / hour in US vs UK. If you compare it to other EU countries it's actually close to x10 times !! For example...regular workers building the underground here in Milan (Italy) get paid about 1500-2000 € per month tops.

I think the first thing that will amaze/shock us is the scale of this thing, 200m long underground station platforms are something London hasn't seen before, it's huge!
They're actually 240m long at most, just not fully accessible. Some of the stations can't accommodate more than 200m apparently so they're all limited to that for now, ready for future expansion.
Its great and all but that kind of money could be so much better spent in Leeds or Birmingham. London already has great transport and everywhere else gets sod all unless they want to commute to London.
No. London needs this. The problem is the government can't see beyond their door step. We're a rich enough country to do these kind of projects elsewhere (with region appropriate plans. Subways aren't always optimal), they just don't because reasons.
So pleased to see the tracks have glass barriers/doors for safety. No horrid accidents or tragic deaths from people jumping in front of trains. Apart from the injury or loss of life, it prevents track and station closures after an incident. It's a shame all stations can't be like this, but at least newer ones have them.
