As a small business owner, just don't try to cheat, and you should be fine. It is not like in the U.S., where if you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'...

Beside the many challenges in PH, hospitality has another problem.: today you are Hot, tomorrow you are Not!! Meaning people want to go to the latest venues, no matter how nice a bar, the public goes around....and you can do nothing about it! Worked almost 20 years in this field and my advice: make it a profitable place (for maybe 3/4 years) and sell it at the highest peak. As often when you wait longer you are doomed and soon a new name and new colour will appear on the front.

My wife and I were visiting Cebu earlier this year and I stopped by Billy's Sports Bar several times. The Filipina staff are lovely and unlike may places are productive and professional. They were nice good ladies, it's a place you could bring your wife or GF to shoot pool play darts or just drink a few cold ones. I met Sterling and we spoke briefly one evening. He's a nice man. One more thing there is actually parking!!!!
@WatchCaliforniaExpat

I ran a profitable business in HK for a number of years - it allowed me to retire at 51 to the Philippines with my wife. We own residential/commercial property here, where we have a profitable business and a decent income. We exercise control over the business. We don't hire people to manage it but do trust our staff, and they are suitably rewarded since if the business prospers, so will they.

The big advantage is having a Filipino partner and the 60/40 split becomes more palatable. I have lived here for twelve years on pensions, and I am flying back to Canada this September. Owning a business can be good but the split is the same as in Cuba in the Philippines. LOL, dental costs are great here compared to the West, I am getting all of my teeth fixed here before I fly out.
@jacked6
@jacked6 17 дней назад
Of course dental costs will be cheaper. Philippines is developing third world country 😅.
@PatrickIrelandsentienti
@PatrickIrelandsentienti 17 дней назад
@@jacked6 I believe that dental costs may be the cheapest in the world here. I am only paying $200 for each crown here and the cost in Canada would be $1,600 CDN, cheaper in the US. I am lucky to be here now to get all of my dental work completed before I return to Canada.
@jacked6
@jacked6 17 дней назад
@@PatrickIrelandsentienti and salaries reflect that as well. $1600 is still dirt cheap. In my country it's almost double that and I know places like South Korea and Japan are even more in cost. Not sure if I trust the Philippines hygienic standards though

Awesome interview again, brother. Sterling seems like a real gentleman right on point. To be honest, I have only been here for 2 1/2 months in the Philippines and I think things flow just perfectly here, other than traffic in the bigger cities. When I’m in the supermarket, mall, restaurants or anywhere else things just move along like they would back in the states in my opinion and my experience. I love it so much here that I extended my visa a third time today and I picked up my ACR-1 card. I was in and out of the Immigration office in maybe 15 minutes tops 🙌

U can start a business if u can find a niche, where u are selfemployed and have full control of quality of service or product. The work ethic and integrity is no where close to the west when u hire locals....other than that...corruption and inefficient bureaucracy is just a pain and frustrating...be careful trusting business partners too. They screw u over, when the opportunity arises.

Good luck with that. Very very little foreigners want to do business in the Philippines to begin with in comparison to other countries. Raise taxes and they’ll find other countries or their own country to go to. Foreigners like me are creating lots of higher than average paying jobs for Filipinos and shouldn’t be disadvantaged.

I'm wondering what his thoughts are on the Canadian Beaver. This is a new restaurant/bar that opened up in Iloilo by a Canadian with zero experience in the business. He seems to be spending money like it's going out of style and hopes his staff one day will be able to afford to their own homes and a car on the salary and tips they make from being a waitress/bartender at his restaurant.
@manosparavida3551

I can't quite figure that Canadian guy out. He claims to have been travelling The Philippines for something like 2+years, yet he doesn't know basic Tagalog. So he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but yes he's ploughing through money like a madman. He also acts/talks very camp. I hope for his and the staff's sake that the business is a success.
