I've just bought the Icarus to add to the wardrobe full of Montane! I've had the Icarus Lite for a while now and it's great and especially with the ME Switch that I bought from you guys. When it gets colder I wear a baselayer, the ME Switch and the Icarus. If it gets windy I'll put a softshell over. Works great for me

That sounds like a good combo. Thanks for the support! Harry

I bought one of these from Trekitt a couple of weeks ago. Fantastic bit of kit that’s been ideal for my daily lockdown walks. Definitely agree on the slimmer fit; I’m a 36 waist - any more and I’d need to size up, but usually find sleeves are then too long!

Nice jacket, but I found filling clumps after washing and unlike down there's no real way to unclump it again to regain it's loft. Same thing happened to two icarus jackets. I know how to look after my outdoor gear and have been washing and reproofing gear including down for years. Much prefer the prism anyway. Lighter, tougher and better hood.

Be good to show us how the back looks too, and the hood, insides, packed size etc. Above average review though, good info about sizing/fit. Cheers

Bought one of these and it feels great. However I should have listened to your warning about fit. I’m quite slim in the shoulders but have a bit of a belly, and this jacket really is a super trim fit around the waste! Can’t size up because it fits perfectly everywhere else. May need to opt for the Prism. Great review guys!
@trekitt
@trekitt 2 года назад
Ahh that's a shame. You're right though; the Prism is a good alternative with a slightly looser fit. Harry

Never really worked out where this jackets fits when the Prism & Flux exist from Montane. I know the later two use sheet insulation, but has the benefit of not having umpteen seams across it. I think it only exists to look like a down puffy jacket.
@trekitt
@trekitt 21 день назад
Both of those jackets have been discontinued by Montane, the closest equivalent now would be the Resond/Respond XT, but we do still love the Prism and Flux, proper classics from Montane. A micro baffled jacket like the Icarus will have improved packability, breathability and mobility compared to sheet insulation, but at the cost of overall weather resistance. We all have our preferences for outdoor clothing which is why most manufacturers have both sheet and baffled synthetic options to hopefully keep us all happy.

I bought one of these jackets about two years ago and my main regret is that I bottled it and went for the blue rather than the orange. Full disclosure I am a huge fan of Montane. The only issue that I have with their clothing is that they do fit snugly. I am a 42 inch chest and a 36 inch waist. This means that this jacket is a tad snug around my arse. However because it is so warm I rarely wear anything other than a base layer underneath. Short sleeve in Summer and long sleeve in Winter. I recently bought the ME Switch and this does go underneath if I am going out when it is really cold. I could not over later this but I sized up in a Rab jacket for this. Because it fits snugly it is ideal as an outer or mid layer and I find it to be perfect to wear when walking as it keeps my temperature in that perfect zone, that said I do run hot but if you run cold this might be on the slightly colder side of perfect but you will still be warm. You need to have this jacket in your clothing system.

How does it compare to the Rab microlight alpine jacket? Warmth-wise, breathability-wise, windproof-wise
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 года назад
All very similar - the main difference is the Microlight uses traditional down whereas the Icarus uses a synthetic insulation. The Icarus is also a little slimmer. We've got a good video outlining the differences between the two insulation types: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CE_XvzUdC5w.html

I wear a Rab vapour rise summit over a merino/synthetic base layer as per your advice, but eventually feel the cold. Could I use this jacket under the Rab or would that affect the effectiveness of the Rab?
@trekitt
@trekitt 2 года назад
You wouldn't want to use this under the VR Summit. You're better off investing in either a lightweight windshell to keep the wind/rain off (if that's how you're feeling the cold), or a larger insulated jacket to put over the top when you stop. Harry
@januzportz7367

Hi, if its a midlayer, do you feel bulky on the hood area? Imagine if you're wearing a rain jacket with hood there will be two hood at the back of our neck.
@trekitt
@trekitt Год назад
It definitely can feel a bit uncomfortable at first if you've got multiple layers all with hoods, but it's something you get used to. The benefits of having it, in my opinion, outweigh the short term irritation.

@ianrudd7442
@ianrudd7442 3 года назад
I run warm to so I would go for this if you aren’t multi layering. You will only want a base layer under this jacket. I’m 5’9, 42 chest and 36 waist. It’s snug around my bum but not tight. I have found with Montane that I sometimes need to size up.
@trekitt

The warmth of the two jackets is very similar, however, due to the construction, the Icarus jacket will be more breathable and little less weather resistant. To be honest, either will serve you well. Thanks for watching. Paul.

Hi Paul looks like a great option for my needs.i have een looking for a Montane jacket that is lite and packable that I can wear on a planned trip to The Outer Hebrides and the Black Mountains . Great video as always I was considering the Montane Ground Control Jacket or the featherlite jacket but now I have another conundrum to consider having just watched this video !! Any advise would be helpful.
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 года назад
Hi Paul. The Ground Control Jacket is more of a focused performance jacket and offers versatile performance, whereas the Icarus is more of an "all-rounder". The Featherlite uses natural insulation and whilst being lighter and more compressible, it doesn't like the wet. So, if you're coming to our local Black Mountains, I'd highly recommend a synthetic fill. I hope that helps. Paul.

@sdnalyam
@sdnalyam 3 года назад
You need to state independent stats, what is the Cfm of the jacket. I doubt that it’s comparable to down in warmth for the same weight of down. Maybe 500-600 fill. Leeds University does lots of materials testing and shows the Bullshite most outdoor companies claim. Also when synthetic fill is compressed it looses a lot of its insulating properties, ie, where shoulder straps and hip belts come in contact and also when people use compression bags . Items need to be tested after a year of heavy use, around 180 days and compared to new ones to see the degradation of the fill, usually around 50%. Look at the latest research, grid fleece for all layers except base and last layer, ie puffy jacket/pants . Ref:ECWCS gen3. Military clothing.

Hi, thanks for your comments. Our videos do not claim to be 100% scientifically accurate and are based on our own personal use, experience, years of accumulated knowledge and manufacturers data. They are called "Inside Look" videos as they are intended to give the viewer a closer look at a product. There's a huge amount of conflicting data out there and the only real way to "test" a garment to see if it works for you, is to get outside and use it. Thanks for watching. Paul.

Hi I'm after the best value insolation jacket and waterproof for around £80 is this possible to get a decent jacket for this price range?
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 года назад
Hi Josh, I would look increase your budget. Purchasing good quality outdoor gear will initially cost more, but in the long run you'll save yourself some cash. As a good example, I purchased an Arc'teryx Atom LT about 5 years ago for £180; I've used it virtually everyday since then and it doesn't look more than a few days old with a good wash. This works out at £3 per month, and it's still going strong. Significantly cheaper gear just doesn't have the same build quality and attention to detail, meaning it typically has to be replaced over and over, which isn't good for your wallet or the environment. If increasing budget is out of the question, have a look at good quality second hand gear. Kind regards, Harry.

On most cheaper jackets I bought, the zippers failed after a while, especially on everything they sell in supermarkets and Wallmart-style stores. So cheap is never cheap at the end. When I take a good brand I mostly have the warranty that the item holds a long time and often can even get repaired if needed. Cheers.

Can you do a video on Brands like who’s better than who
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 года назад
It'd be a difficult video to make. Calling one better than the other would be a matter of option based on that particular person's requirements rather than fact. E.G, Bob prefers Montane because he's a climber and it fits him well, or Jeff prefers Fjallraven because he's a walker/trekker and likes their traditional fabrics. Each brand has so many different products aimed at different people that it'd be nearly impossible to say definitively that one is better than the other.
