Just so there is no misunderstanding - getting qualified is not optional. The first jarring realization this aint boot anymore is being told no liberty until you get qualified on the radio. So there is no CC berating you - it's on you - you want liberty like the rest of the crew? Then get qualified as a radio watchstander.
My son joined as a type 2 AST candidate. Finished basic last August and was sent to a base to wait for a prep school for AST school. He has trained as a lifeguard and dispatcher for the base emergency responders. COVID slowed down schools. As he waits he works out with supervision from ASTs. He is enjoying the Coast Guard and patiently training and waiting for AST school. He will likely not go until the end of this year.
I've been watching your channel for a hit minute and been planning on joining the coast guard. Thanks for all the advice and info over the years. I also have an aspiration for making videos and stuff just like how you do. Thanks !
Interesting video. As a member of the USCG Auxiliary, I just spent the day doing boat crew qualification practice for a QE later this month (if we don’t get shut down again due to the virus). I noticed a lot of familiar tasks in your qualification sign offs.
You own your own home right? In a video you talked about how buying a house is a good idea when you’re in the coast guard rather than renting and paying a lot of money for something you don’t own. But if you get moved around every few years in the coast guard wouldn’t it make sense to rent? Or do you not have to move around and have the option to just continue to be stationed where you are currently stationed at? Just wondering because I’m thinking of enlisting
I’m not in the coast guard or any military branch. But if I were to guess, he bought a home as an investment. If he can pay the house while he is stationed in that state, he will eventually become the owner of that and can choose to rent it out when he gets stationed somewhere else or he can sell it based on the amount still not paid. If it was me in his shoes, I’d buy a house too. Spending money to rent a place with no chance of it ever becoming yours is a waste imo. Especially when you have a steady income like in the military. If I ever get in, that will be the first thing I’d do seriously, even if I don’t get to live in it.
There is one small detail which a new coasty needs to understand. There is significant pressure to get qualified. You likely wont get liberty until you get radio watch-stander qualified.
Hello! I'm thinking of joining the Coast Guard. I really love sea animals, is there any position in the Coast Guard that will allow me to work with animals and if so which? When you are stationed somewhere, do you sleep at a base or can you have your own house and sleep there? Will I have plenty of civilian career opportunities with good pay when I leave the Coast Guard?
If u get a score of 60 on the asvab and your dream job score qualifications is 80 is there a way to prove or test for you to get that job later on or no
I am going straight to ET A school after basic. Is the amount of studying you had to do at your first station similar to the ~7 months of A school studying?
What does it take to qualify for DEPOT? I have no prior experience but I have a bachelors and am a full time high school teacher. Also, do you know any teachers who are in CG reserves? Thank man love the videos.
I'm currently still waiting to hear back from my recruiter on DEPOT but I believe if you don't have prior service then you would need professional experience that would equate to a rate in the USCG but I don't know specifically. I'd speak to a recruiter near you.
Depot is only for prior service military members. If you have a degree, you can apply to go Officer. If you dont want to be officer, you can enlist instead. Reserve is an option too.
