My name's Julian. I served 8 years in Coast Guard from 2014-2022.
I started the MJ community to help my fellow service members learn how to SAVE, INVEST, and MAXIMIZE BENEFITS as helping people learn and grow in their financial awareness is something that I am passionate about.
Welcome to the journey!

Juliet 171 2005. We had ti carry the heavy M1 garand filled with led which made them even heavier , they kicked our asses with them workouts using those
I want to join the Coast Guard because it's a well paying job & I'd most likely be able to stay in Alaska & since it's the military branch with the 2nd least amount of personnel I want to help them as much as I can.
When I enlisted there was an 18 month waiting list. This was in 1969, so I signed up when I was a junior in high school. Vietnam was still kicking and a lot of young men didn't want to be drafted. Way back when the USCG still had a basic training center in California. Basic training was tougher than I expected. 😎🚤🚂🚃🚃🚃✝
Roughly how often should an MK expect to do law enforcement operations/boardings? Also, are there any specific types of boarding missions that MK's do? I know ME's are dedicated law enforcement, but do MK's still get to do the "cool" types of boarding missions, like busting drug runners, smugglers, or migrants, or is it mostly relegated to "tame" boardings, like fishing inspections?
Hello to all honor guardsman present and before, I was a member of the 74 to 76 Honor Guard. Drill team and platoon, under the Late chief George plager who passed away in 2019. and LT Heinz. One of the best experience of my life, next to making the Olympic wrestling trial team after High School. My experience also, was in boot camp in Cape May. They ask who wants to go home a month early from boot camp, and ask us to do push-ups. I did around 50 or more and was chosen to be in boot camp honor guard. We had our own barracks during the daytime, command by BM1 Marshall. We had what they called the top and the bottom, were the new members set on the floor in one part of the building and polished our brass. While the senior members were in another part of the building. and we practice every day spending our rifles. I was drafted from boot camp to presidential honor guard in Alexandria Virginia. I love the guard! and Could have did it for 20 years or more. Ps. I just left Coast Guard week, this weekend in Grand Haven Michigan a festival every year. Coast Guard City. USA. and the Honor Guard was there. It was Great.
It takes about 4 to 5 years when you become that person the shop chief or maintenance officer can turn to you and say, "I need you to go...do whatever" There is a lot put on you when you get to your first unit. Just breathe and take it one step at a time. And never be afraid to ask, "Who's flying the plane?" That works both on deck and in flight. It is not just for a pilot, but for maintenance as well. When things get moving fast, it can be a good question to ask to ensure everyone has situational awareness.
If you join the Air Force reserve and choose to do more work volunteering and potentially going on a deployment, are you still likely to be frowned upon by not doing the college thing even if you in the reserves? That was a shocker to me how they will tend to push that on you if you're not doing it being active. It definitely made me lean more towards the coast guard.
been watching your videos for a bit, I'm taking the ASVAB next month! Aiming for Aviation. Thanks for your videos and congrats on your recent marriage!
If you have a college degree before going into any branch then by all means go the officer route if the opportunity presents itself. I went directly to OTS with a degree in finance (investments, banking etc) they made me a POL officer and I loved it! Simple equation was I took care of my troops and they took care of me. I did their taxes, got them on separate rations, kept them off CQ duty and got them hats that said POL not Supply Sqdn. One hand washed the other! Had great NCOs everywhere I went except one and he had enough 'juice' at TAC Hq to bail out before I had to write an APR. Was in from '63 to '84. In this time frame I never had a man (no women in POL, had to be 5'9" and 160 pounds) with a four year degree.
Long story short if you join the coastguard looking for law enforcement (BM)-“Boatswains mate” is the road to go if you want to be in charge of a unit and be the boss maritime enforcement is the road to go

I will be sent to the bootcamp this August and I would like to get that top pick with the option of going to Bahrain since i did work there as a teacher for 7 yrs.
I was pleased with myself for writing a good score on the ASVAB (this was early 1987). My CG recruiter let me know that the test was tailored for people who had a solid 8th grade education. At that time I had a couple of years of college under my belt. I went on to become an FT in the Coast Guard. It wasn't too many years later that I discovered that I made an extremely bad career move. The Coast Guard hated FTs and only tolerated us due to receiving NAVORD (Navy Ordnance) money. I cannot think of a worse job in the CG than being a MK92 FCS technician on a '270 ('Famous' Class) cutter.
