As the world's largest flying observatory, NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, or SOFIA, is a unique space-science asset. SOFIA incorporates a 19-ton German-built telescope with an effective diameter of 2.5 meters in a highly modified Boeing 747SP aircraft that flies astronomical science missions at altitudes between 39,000 and 45,000 feet, above 99 percent of the infrared-blocking water vapor in the atmosphere. Capable of conducting observations in visible through far-infrared spectra from any part of the globe, SOFIA provides access to a spectral region not currently accessible by ground or space telescopes.
A joint program of NASA and the German Aerospace Center DLR, the SOFIA observatory is based at NASA's Science and Aircraft Integration Facility in Palmdale, Calif., a satellite facility of the NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center. NASA's Ames Research Center manages the science and mission operations in cooperation with the Universities Space Research Association and the Deutsches SOFIA Institut.
SOFIA's Airborne Astronomy Ambassadors program provides educators hands-on experience as they work with scientists during missions on the flying observatory.

My son Jason has just joined the SOFIA team as an astronomer/instrument scientist; his first mission will be in April 2021. I was wow'ed when I saw a video about SOFIA in 2011 when it first flew and Jason was still in grad school. Never in my wildest dream did I think someday he will actually be the main scientist on the aircraft!

Sadly, SOFIA made its last flight in September 2022 after NASA ended the program. Jason really enjoyed working on it, flying over 50 successful missions and made a lot of friends.

I'm going next week! cannot wait to add the valuable infra red data to my project!

I am told that SOFIA needs more published papers to demonstrate the program's value. Good job! P.S. I find your playlist on QFT very interesting and will watch it through. (I have a physics background too - but I don't do any research.) Cheers!

i like the aircraft but i was wondering why didn't you guys use the shuttle carrier 747 instead of the SP?
@awuma
@awuma 7 лет назад
SOFIA started construction (1997) long before the two Shuttle 747's were retired in 2012. This particular plane had a 20-year career with PanAm as Clipper Lindbergh and with United. It is much better suited for SOFIA than the shuttle carriers, which were older (747-100's) and bigger, whereas SOFIA is a 747SP which is shorter and designed for higher altitudes, higher speeds and longer range. One of the retired Shuttle carriers now sits as a source of parts for SOFIA. Since it is a joint US-German project, it has proved much harder to cancel than if it were purely NASA. Most great observatories and telescopes are now multinational efforts and therefore relatively stable financially. I imagine that once (and if) JWST launches successfully, SOFIA may become somewhat redundant (NASA does not like to draw projects out). However, it has capabilities which no space-based or ground-based observatory has.

Pretty safe to say that when JWST launches, deploys and gathers data after first light, this observatory will be obsolete no?

@@gavinjames1351 Do you have any clue as to the infrared power of this telescope? Can it be used for example to locate humans in a remote location. Like search and rescue mission for scientists in Antarctica for example. And if it's able to capture footage as well. I mean work as an infrared camera ...

Different mirror sizes and different instruments mean JWST and SOFIA usually will be doing different things. In fact, they probably will work well together as astronomers will want to observe the same objects with different instruments.

Better way would be to have Drones positioned up and remotely handled by the ground station. Could work out cheaper.

***** I would start with some simple ones like a decent reflector or a refractor and see how well it can be manipulated. If the tech matures then sure why not :) (though 19 tonne is a far shot I feel)

Why would you put the telescope in the plane, if the plane, or at least a part of it, can be the telescope? No need to open a door. The exterior can be the lense. Two-three wiper blades for the bugs and you're set to go ...
@alexispapageorgiou72
@alexispapageorgiou72 4 года назад
Perhaps take out the need of tilting the plane towards the desired direction as well ...
@rickgould6554

You simply would not be able to receive as accurate IR imagery through any type of glass, not to mention the refraction issue, and the weight issue of such a glass window, and having to be curved, and how to do it so it wouldn't crack, and by the time you've solved the thickness/strength issue, now you're back to weight, refraction and IR transparency. Simple put: Lot's of reasons. There are a LOT of people who design and engineer these modifications. A myriad of PhD's were involved long before anything was built.

_"They can see SOFIA operating [...] the next 10 to 15 years"_ - unfortunately ***** *cut the funds* so that operation will *cease by September* if no solution is found! Operation costs is about 85 Million USD and only 9 Million USD by ***** are left. Please. Get funding. Try to find a solution. Go and talk to European Space Agency, ESA - Roskosmos - JAXA - whatever it takes.
