The heavens above our earth have gripped the imagination of generations of human beings. Gazing into space and the dream of discovering the origins of humanity is as old as civilization itself. The search for answers. Where do we come from? Where are we going? What is out there in this endlessness?
The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is used to explore the universe. A former passenger jet, equipped with an infrared telescope, enables a clear view into the infinity of space. Our SOFIA documentation shows the general overhaul of the Boeing 747 and gives insights into the history of astronomy.

@BleachUranusBlackHolesAreGross Tell us how you really feel :) SOFIA can study the composition of planetary atmospheres and surfaces; the structure and composition of comets; physics and chemistry of the interstellar medium. You have to use infrared telescope for that, but water absorbs infrared light and most of it is lost. Much less vapour at high altitute. Why is it "stupid"?

NASA had several flying observatories, a Learjet and a C-141 Starlifter named KAO Kuiper Airborne Observatory which could operate from everywhere in the world. KAO observations found out that all the outer gas giant planets have a ring system!

Fun fact: SOFIA is actually the last 747 from Pan American World Airways to fly. It started life as Clipper Lindbergh, and she was christened by Charles Lindbergh's wife, the author Anne Morrow Lindbergh, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of her husband's historic transatlantic flight. Update: SOFIA was retired a few months ago, replaced by the James Webb Space Telescope, which has an compact, advanced version of SOFIA's infrared sensors. Today, its now preserved at the Pima Air and Space Museum in Arizona.

Yeah Welt is something else, theres basically no other channel that can teach OFF TOPIC content so enjoyable like them. Especially because often documentaries are only about one thing and you end up with more questions than before you watched it. But they try to make people grasp about how certain things work before they explain how the whole thing works the documentary is about. Its so refreshing.

747sp is the perfect platform for this. Reason is the operating ceiling of the SP is only superseded by the Concord and military fighter jets . At the time of it comerical launch to obtain the the long distance capabilities that Boeing promoted it need to operate in the rarefied air above 40,000 feet .. btw .. was it not the scientific community that told us to stop using helium for balloons because it was a limited quantity that cant be manufactured from alternative re sources... but it's ok to release tons of it to cool thier scopes.
