I've actually recently been thinking about a setting I'd like to see in an episode, and I came up with Platform no. 9. I know not many train stations have such a large number of platforms but watching the guard/passenger interactions makes it really easy to envision the guys making comedy and absurd drama out of those roles. The whole business of trains seem to attract real characters anyway, so I think there's a lot of potential!
@WeeLin
@WeeLin 2 года назад
Most of the big London stations would have enough platforms. You could get a mix of business types going to conferences, spaced out clubbers on their way home and maybe someone trying to get a picture of the scene from Harry Potter!

@@WeeLin If it were London then I'd love to see a poor tourist getting totally turned around by the transport system, maybe eventually leaving on a train only to end up back where they started- stumbling off looking haggard only to gape in horror at the same smug ticket inspector they left on the platform at the beginning of the episode

Not to be a pessimist, but I can say without a doubt that the remake will be dreadful. As an American, I watch Inside No. 9 for its quaint Britishness and clever dialogue. Anything being remade is redundant by default, so like you said, we still always have the originals and the new series to come.

This is fitting for a lot of the questions… I want to do a video at some point where I talk about some of my ideas for episodes. The setting I’d most want to see is either a plane crashing and the passengers need to decide who gets the parachute or an episode where a child is unsure of Q9 on a piece of homework so asks parents and it can go from there. It could be a story like the Bill where it’s blown out of proportion or it can be a comedy commenting on the school system and the parents could be like Mr Incredible from that one scene in Incredibles 2 where he says “why would they change math? Math is math!”
@WeeLin
@WeeLin 2 года назад
Please make a video, I'd love to hear more about those ideas! Maybe the Q9 could be a typo in the question sheet or textbook, but yet it's still driving this one kid and their family mad. Love this, thank you for doing it!! Ooh yes Possum is a great film - I am a huge horror fan and there ain't much I can't handle but I found the ending of Possum so disturbing I had to mute it 😂some of my ideas for no.9 settings - a TV channel (am thinking broadcast interruption or breakdown on live TV, although maybe a bit similar to Deadline), a hospital/doctor's cubicle, a plane (Twilight Zone vibes!!), there's soooo many they could still do! Exciting!
@WeeLin
@WeeLin 2 года назад
Great ideas - I think there's room for a "Studio 9" TV-themed episode, as they've already done a few (Seance Time, Deadline) but the studio was never the "9". I can just about imagine a US equivalent of Inside No 9... but once you said they'd be using the same scripts, I kinda lost hope. Inside No 9 leans so hard into British cultural tropes that I think a lot of these scripts will just be a bit strange if they try to do them with Americans duplicating those tropes. There's going to be characters that occupy very different cultural positions in the US - where they'll be lovable rather than obnoxious, or vice versa. Maybe it's a stereotype, but I think the way that Americans deal with secrets and pent-up emotions is just very different. I think it could work better if the scripts were written from scratch with the US's culture and audience in mind. Shows like Veep work for that reason. And in the same way, they might be better off just calling it something else, and not drawing attention to the connection. Inside No 9 stood on its own and was stronger for it. EDIT: Also, absolutely do watch Possum.
@WeeLin
@WeeLin 2 года назад
Yeah, I can think of a few cultural stereotypes that might not make sense in a US version. Sardines, Nana's Party or The Bill would probably play out differently, if they worked at all. And La Couchette - does America even have much in the way of sleeper trains? Probably better to take the format and try something new with it.

21:51 I had a similar idea of an episode set in the 80s which was all about the Protect and Survive campaign and it commented on how the government basically lied to everyone to calm them down. I think there could be a great dark story there and instead of being like Threads, it’s more like When the Wind Blows (phenomenal film BTW but it’s very heavy) Again, it may not be the best idea currently due to recent stuff in the world but I still like the idea

One is an experienced astronaut and the other has relatively new but passed all of their tests. However, they hated doing the tests and admit that it was damaging to their mental health. They hope that it will be worth it to go to space however it’s quite disappointing due to the fact that there’s not really any exploration. It’s just a lot of exercise and is mostly fixing stuff not to mention the lifestyle probably isn’t the most pleasant. They just overall find the experience quite disappointing and not as good as their imagination The episode could be a commentary on both overwork as well as setting hopes too high and being sure of the ins and outs of every job It’s just an idea but that’s the only way a space idea could work

My favorate episode is betwean 12 days of cristeen and tom and geri. i mean 12 days was incredable but tom and geri was basicly a fight club twist and since that was my favorate movie i cant not think its my favorate episode in no 9 XD also will say bernie clifton's dressing room made me cry at the end i think its cus it reminded me of comedy duo acts i use to enjoy like cannon and ball and the chuckle brothers and the fact i first watched the episode to barrys death made it more even more impactfull
@WeeLin

I used to love all those comedy double acts when I was a kid, so Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room reminded me of that - I would have loved Cheese and Crackers if they'd been a real comedy duo! There's something really sad when one person in a duo passes away, especially with comedians.

I said David Tennant and Julian Barrett at pretty much the same time as you for guest star. Spooky! I would like to see Karen Gillan and Ade Edmondson in an episode. If he was still alive, Rik Mayall would have been an amazing special guest. I am really loving Rose Matefeo's work atm, so she'd be awesome. And her fellow New Zealander Jermaine Clement would be a great guest star too.
@WeeLin
@WeeLin 2 года назад
RIP Rik - still can't believe he's gone. Karen Gillan would be amazing too, if she wasn't too busy. Ahh, I'd love to see Jermaine in a No 9 - New Zealand and the UK have a similar sense of humour, I think. Maybe get him in if they ever did a musical - loved the songs from Flight of the Conchords!

I’ve never thought about the exclamation in my name, you’re the first person to point it out, so woohoo. Anyway, a great Q&A and cheers for answering my questions. I got about 20 minutes into Parasite, but figured I should save it for another time when I’m fully in the right mindset. I can absolutely see the Number 9 vibe, and Bong Joon Ho is a wonderful director. I was actually thinking of hypothetical recasts for an American remake of 12 Days Of Christine, and err… Imagine Joe Pesci as Ernie 😂

You're very welcome! The reason I started talking about Inside No 9 was because very few RU-vidrs had made videos about it at the time - that was years ago, and quite a few have popped up since. Also, I was pretty much obsessed with the show and HAD to talk about it somewhere! The fact that this channel has become a bit of a No 9 hub still blows my mind every day - I honestly thought those first IN9 videos would hardly get any views, but I made them anyway and, well, here we are. Thanks so much for listening and being a part of it too!

American remake? Baffles me that there’s absolutely no cultural or language barrier and they want to remake it. Btw, why did we not get the episode this week, just scheduling? Finally, yay Tom and Gerri for the best episode!
@WeeLin
@WeeLin 2 года назад
I think it was a scheduling thing - I heard it was a sport or something. And yeah, it's not like there's a language barrier, plus I've spoken to plenty of Americans who are really interested in British TV and culture, so they'd probably prefer to watch it as is.

I also think if Steve and Reeces were to a particular genre I think they should do a fairy tale - even though people could say they have tackled aspects of the fairy tale in various episodes like The Devil of Christmas, The Trial of Elizabeth Gadge and Wise Owl - and even more so the bones of at Nicholas. I would also think they could do an interesting romantic comedy myself maybe the train station idea could be a great setting for it

thanks for the videos and recommendations they are a great companion to the show. did u ever see A Field in England with Reece? so creepy and surreal it wud make a cool setting for an Inside no.9 episode. I'd also recommend the Venture Bros, it's an adult swim cartoon so pretty different in style and tone to Inside no.9 but shares a lot of the themes of failure, alienation and confusion 😁 I think it's still on 4od (warning the first season is a little ropey but it gets much better)

I am only a few minutes in, sorry if this was asked already, but I'd be interested if you had any directors or writers that you would like to feature in the show. Also, in inside number 9 episodes, what writers and directors would you draw a likeness to? What "works", subjects, themes, genres would you like in the show?
@WeeLin
@WeeLin 2 года назад
You know, plenty of people asked about actors but nobody else asked about directors. No 9s had some brilliant ones, including the two latest episodes. I'd leave the writing to Steve and Reece though (unless they asked me, of course!)

Surprised by the amount of chat about the American remake, I really don’t care if I’m honest, I hope they both make a pile of cash from it, let’s face it im sure the bbc don’t pay them enough and they could invest the cash in a independent project it two.

If the American No 9 funds more Pemberton and Shearsmith projects, then that's a net positive for television! I don't mind them doing it for the money - I'm just confused whose idea the remake actually was.
