If ever a character in Inside no.9 deserved a hopeful ending it was Ronnie. As you say that ending was beautiful and powerful
@WeeLin
@WeeLin 2 года назад
It was a beautiful moment to watch, and a hopeful thought that Ronnie would finally get to heal and grow. He still has a mother who loves him (I really should have mentioned her performance too - brief as it was, I loved it), and I think they would be even closer once she learned what really happened to her family. They can finally get past that awful scene from the hospital where she asks why Ronnie lit the match when he knew it was wrong and Ronnie was bullied into staying silent. What an awful secret he had to keep. Maybe I'm overthinking, but this episode really made me feel for those characters.

I very heavily related to this episode. I don’t wanna overshare in the RU-vid comments but, seeing someone I can relate to (a neurodivergent victim of sexual assault) be able to “win” was so fucking powerful that it left me speechless and in tears. I’ve already seen this episode 5 times and it’s by far my favorite out of the ENTIRE show so far. It also reminded me a lot of Petscop (my personal favorite piece of media ever) Anyways, thanks to whoever reads this and have a nice day

Thanks for sharing - I'm so sorry for what you've been through, but I'm so glad this episode resonated so strongly with you. I'm always so glad to hear whenever the positive messages of this show ring true with the people they're representing. It's been quite a series for neurodivergence too, hasn't it, with Steve's characters being dyslexic in Merrily Merrily and having OCD in A Random Act of Kindness. I've never seen Petscop, but I will look that up. Thanks once again, and I hope you have a nice day too 💜

Another really chilling part of the episode is specifically when Ronnie's recalling what happened on Joanna's birthday and Wilf/Wise Owl is trying to lure him up the stairs - the "wise owl knows best" said in the scratchy, monstrous voice and the creepy design of the owl really solidifies that for me. I think they definitely nailed the eerie and even scary factor here
@SamiDC
@SamiDC Год назад
American fan here! The idea to use the nostalgic aesthetics of classic PSAs was a stroke of brillance. I grew up in the 90s, but I still saw my fair share of the ones from the 70s. It truly was uncanny, the resemblance. They just absolutely nailed it. I've watched this episode 3 times now. Steve and Reece are so adept at misdirection that each time I watch it, I find a new scene to recontextualize. I was once a victim of SA when I was very young by my brothers, but it didn't last long as I spoke out maybe only a couple of weeks after it started. Many don't find that courage so soon. They don't find that courage because their abuser is someone they trust and believe when they say things like 'You'll get in trouble if you tell' and are usually to young to fully understand the gravity of the situation. So it compounds into years of abuse and emotional cripping for the victim. So seeing Ronnie break free of his abuser control felt very rewarding. I almost wish we got to see the results of Ronnie speaking out, but the ambiguity and human imagination work just as well. I'm so glad we're getting at least two more seasons! This show is just so amazing with it's storytelling.
@WeeLin
@WeeLin Год назад
I can't believe how well they nailed this whole episode, and I can't wait for the next two series. I'm so sorry for what happened to you, and you must have been really brave to speak out about it. I hope the episode didn't bring up too many bad memories, but at least the ending is positive, maybe even empowering? I can't speak for SA victims, but from what I've heard, I think the topic was handled well.
@SamiDC
@SamiDC Год назад
@@WeeLin Well the good news is that that specific experience is far behind me. So, no, that didn't trigger anything for me. However, I can't say that for everything I went through in my childhood. My mother was an emotionally abusive alcoholic with narcissistic tendencies and a "marvelous talent" for gaslighting; which has left me with C-PTSD. And the good news about that is I'm in a much better place than I was 10 or hell even 5 years ago. So it wasn't the SA that hit home for me, but Reece's performance as a mentally and emotionally stunted man, on every rewatch, it hits a little closer because I've been there. Hell, that scared, angry and hurt little girl is still inside me but she's much calmer these days. But when he says 'I trusted you?' Oh that made me clench my jaw. These are the people who are supposed to help nurture and guide you into adulthood. And when a parent is negligent or abusive in any manner, it's a betrayal on a primal level that leaves you grieving for the relationship you wanted but will likely never get. By the end, I just felt so proud of Ronnie for finding his strength and the bravery to wield it. I was in that same spot years ago and it started me on my journey to a healthier and happier mind. So, when I see a character take those pivitol steps, I can't help but feel a sense of pride because now the real healing can begin. IDK if this is making any sense lol! But I hope it does. Thank you for your kind words, my dear. 🤗
@WeeLin
@WeeLin Год назад
@@SamiDC And thank you for having the courage to move on and share your story. Narcissists can mess you up for years afterwards, but it must be so much worse when it's come from a parent, someone you were meant to trust and depend on. That moment really does cut deep in the episode. I'm so glad you've managed to get to a better place in spite of it all, and I hope things continue to get better for you x

This might just be the first inside no.9 i watched before the recap and, WOW. This was so wild, disturbing and yet, the one little thing i caught out is actually pretty heartwarming. ~~~ ~~~ Ronnie (thats the name, right?) kept his promise to his mom, he didn't do anything dumb! Didn't kill himself, didn't kill the dad, just removed himself from the situation to tell his mom about the events later. That was really well done.
@WeeLin
@WeeLin 2 года назад
Nice observation. I didn't realise that until about my third or fourth watch (though I'd just thought about how he'd promised not to kill himself and hadn't thought much about the dad). The way his mum speaks makes me wonder if he'd attempted to harm himself in the past too. Watching it again, I find the conversation with Ronnie and his mum very sweet, especially considering everything behind their relationship - at this point, she still thinks Ronnie started the fire that killed her daughter, but she still loves him regardless and wants his company on Joanne's anniversary. I feel like their relationship will be much closer once Ronnie tells her the truth.

Given the themes involved it sort of felt… almost reminiscent of Sardines, in some ways? this episode hurt me on SUCH a personal level and the ending really really got to me. It's probably the most gentle and kind portrayal of csa and overcoming trauma - and how nice to see it come out of number 9 ! it's like Love's Great Adventure in the way it ended on such a nice note. also hey wise owl what the FUCK i was half watching it and looked over and the horrifying naked mask showed up and i just sat, jaw-dropped, watching that scene play out.

Definitely my favourite this series. I loved the powerful ending and the atmosphere that reminded me of Ari Aster's Hereditary. I also found this hilarious, particularly the taxidermy PIF. "Leave it for 24 hours. Plenty of time to play a game or have a sandwich".

A brilliant episode but definitely one to make your buttocks clench in unsettling discomfort. Pretty hard hitting and yes, that scene where Reece looking in horror at the doorway and then the naked guy in the owl mask steps through made my jaw drop, dreading what would happen next. Great ending though...definitely had to be hopeful. Btw...would love to a video about the creepy PSAs (Spirit of Dark & Lonely water or the one where the kid gets fried getting his kite back).

Thank you for such a thoughtful and sensitive analysis of this episode. I've been wanting to comment here since you posted this but been struggling to find words to express my feelings about this astonishing episode. It turned out to be one of the most powerful pieces of television exploring the issue of child abuse I have seen. As you say Wilf is all too believable and realistic and sadly we have seen too many abusers who operate like him. with his gaslighting and controlling behaviour. Incredibly grateful for how Louise Hooper and Sam O Leary helped tell Ronnie's back story and how the episode showed that while difficult it is possible to break the power of an abuser. And Reece was noting short of astonishing. This episode illustrated why this is such a respected and beloved tv show. We really are lucky to have Steve and Reece

Very lucky indeed, and Lousie Hooper, Sam O'Leary and Christian Henson too. When such thoughtful and talented people put their efforts together, you can get some truly incredible works of art. That's how I'd describe this episode - every part is exceptional, and yet it's also greater and more meaningful than the sum of those parts. I just can't stop praising it.

I find PiFs really fascinating too! I really love the analytical work of Bob Fischer and his blog, The Haunted Generation, and Diane Rodgers of The Centre For Contemporary Legend, based in Sheffield. both of them really delve into the disturbing content promoted in the 70s and 80s. personally, as an early 90s kid, I'd love to see more about the public broadcasts of the late 80s- 2000s as I feel they don't get as much attention as the brilliant 70s films. love your videos and really loved this episode!

I'll be honest, series 7 hasn't really been my favourite. It started well but the middle episodes didn't really live up to my expectations. So when Wise Owl came along, I was hopeful for improvement. What I actually got was one of the best no.9s they've ever done. This goes into my all time top 5 and I'll go as far as calling it Reece's best performance. Excellent! Can't wait to see Series 8!
@WeeLin

Reece has done some amazing performances in his career, no doubt about that. But the way he plays Ronnie is something I think few actors could achieve without coming across as over the top or silly. You just feel for him right away and you keep wondering what happened to him to make him act this way. He'll have a hard time topping that performance in series 8, but I've no doubt both him and Steve will be fantastic!

This is absolutely my favourite episode of the whole show. A brilliant, sensitive blend of horror, black humour and tragedy that acts as a visceral, effective portrayal of childhood trauma. The acting is amazing especially from Reece, the music is sinister yet not imposing, and the animation has a simplistic yet creepy appearance. The ending is so beautiful and cathartic too. I love Wise Owl so much

I just realized the final line 'Get stuffed' wasn't just a nicer way of saying 'Get fucked,' it was also referring to the taxidermy Wilf did! Ronnie's double entendre made it more like 'Eat shit and die' which, subjectively to me, is an even more severe dismissal and long overdue

I needed to sit quietly and have a breather after Wise Owl - I haven't been enthralled with Series 7 as a whole but what a finale! It didn't touch on anything personal for me like Thinking Out Loud or Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room did, but I always find horror based in reality to be much scarier and the unfolding story was such a gut-punch. Also: yes please, I would LOVE to see you make a video about the PIFs! I was born in the early 80s so I missed the 'golden age' but there were still plenty of notable ones in the 80s and even 90s. 'Don't Be A Dummy, Don't Throw Fireworks' scared the bejesus out of me as a child, and even as an adult I can't listen to In The Summertime thanks to that horrific drink-driving clip!
@WeeLin

The fact that I just heard "DON'T BE A DUMMY, DON'T THROW FIREWORKS" being screamed out loud in a child's voice should give you some idea of the impact that one had on me too! It's also quite mad that "have a drink, have a drive" are actually some of the lyrics to that song - maybe it was only a matter of time before it was adapted into some twisted British drink driving PIF!

Before this episode, I was looking at some old PSAs. I came across one from the early 2000s called “Cartoon”, which is a live action father thrashing about his cartoon son, with very exaggerated animation, then at the end, they revealed it was a live action boy, as he lay dead, being a PSA on Child abuse. The next day, this episode airs. And as a result, hit like an asteroid. My god this episode is one of the best of the best. This is honestly Top 5 material for me. The animation is so well done, Reece gave honestly one of his greatest performances, the horror genuinely unnerved me, the taxidermy PSA was gruesome but funny in a very sadistic way. Then the twist. The single shot of Wise Owl with the alcohol had my jaw on the floor, the further twist of abuse left it on the floor. The different layers of horror and irony was just out of this world. But the ending is quite possibly, the most profound thing Reece and Steve have done in their career. Not just with stories relating to abuse, but you see so much, so many stories where characters get their comeuppance through violence and murder. But the fact that Ronnie has the courage to be the better man, not follow in his father’s footsteps, and reach out for help is just absolutely beautiful, as there’s always those out there to help if you reach out, moves on from the past and speak out. That only scratches the surface. What an episode, easily a 10/10 Twit You… Twit You

This is an amazing piece of telly (and a great piece of analysis, I’d love a deep dive on this). I can’t put across how good this episode is, so I’m not going to try. The use of animation takes it to a different level tapping into our childhoods through PIF is so devious again words fail me. The sound on this episode well worth a mention but it’s the scene of Wise Owl slumped in a chair boozed up that takes the biscuit and it will stay with me forever…chilling.

That was an extremely hard-hitting and dark episode. Maybe the darkest ever? I know that's a big claim. But then it (sort of) had a positive ending. This has gone right into my top 3 immediately (sorry Cold Comfort but you’ve been demoted to ‘top 5’ status) Everything about this episode was basically flawless from the animation, the story, the horror and Reece’s phenomenal acting (it may just be my favourite performance from him) I was excited for this episode as the animated segments looked great and I also have a morbid fascination with PSAs (so I’d love to see your video on them) Actually, if you’re curious, there’s a fantastic series by the RU-vidr Adam Martyn called ‘Video Scaries’ where he goes through a bunch of different PSAs and talks about them Anyway, Wise Owl is a damn great episode and definitely my favourite of the season (it was also the episode I had the most to say about in my own videos) I can’t wait for your Series 7 awards video

Series 7 in my opinion wasn’t one of no.9s best in comparison but having just watched this episode now it’s one of the strongest episodes in the entire show (other than 12 days of course) let alone the series. It’s dark and hits you hard in a lot of ways. I had the same thought of how it was going to turn out but as usual, they times it 10 fold in the reveal which is what they do best every time. The ending could have went both way and worked but the one they chose felt just right. Definitely a new favourite of mine. Thank you for the recap as well while I was still reeling from the episode.

It was terrifying, and somehow even worse when you watch it again and know what's happening. also (spoilers ahead) maybe this says something about me but i almost IMMEDIATELY sussed that Ronnie had been SA'd by the Wise Owl actor. I took one look at Wise Owl and the way Ronnie was behaving and thought, oh something of the Saville has gone down here, poor lad. Then I felt like maybe they wouldn't go that route because it was too obvious, but as the episode went on I was just reaffirmed of it. Something about 70s archival footage is just... tainted with that particular kind of darkness for some reason. Perhaps because so many child predators were big names in the 70s.

In retrospect I’m very glad I only got about five minutes in before realising my concentration wasn’t on good enough form for the rest… it would not have been an ideal way too round things off! Loved it when I did get through it though. It makes a lot of sense for them to mine the potential of old-school PIF creepiness, both the unflinching subject matter and that particular tendency of old animation to look uncanny and unsettling. I didn’t have a clue where it was going for the longest time (truth be told I thought we were going to find out he’d taxidermied his sister) It’s been a really solid series, I think. Nice that they’re not shying away from continuing to be disturbing, but the weighty emotional stuff worked really well too. Your ideas for new videos sound fantastic btw, please do them! I think Inside No 9 is great for that type of variety. I feel Wise Owl had so much dark stuff already, that it didn't really need another crazy twist were Ronny does something mad to his father, because at this point it was probably expected. Those twists usually work best when the episode is more light in tone, or something like Mr King where it's clearly misdirecting you, but I think most people would have just expected Ronny to completely lose it, but it was nice that it never happened

As usual your insights provided a lot more context to understand the depth of the episode. I’m from Canada not the UK so the specificity of the safety films didn’t strike a nerve for me the way it would or anyone who saw them as a child. We did have some safety films at school but I am really really really old so they didn’t run on television in the 60s. I agree this was a chilling and moving episode. And who knew we would have TWO full frontal episodes in this series? 😳 Like the best of the episodes, this one felt less like a segment of an anthology and more like a short film that would stand on its own. Not that they have ever been less than impressive, but I think the production team and art department has really stepped up for this run. I wonder if they had bigger budgets then in the past? This one will certainly be worth looking at a few times to pick up on the details. As great as it was, it’s still @ #2 for me after Kid/Nap. I’m looking forward to your upcoming videos.
