Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room may be my favourite half hour of television ever - such a beautiful mediation on friendship and how people impact our lives. It was wonderful Steve rightfully won a BAFTA for this and that Reece was there supporting him

Totally agree, mate, the ending gets me every time. As it goes there’s a book that was written by a palliative care nurse called ‘The Top Five Regrets of the Dying’ in which regret number 4 is “I wish I’d have stayed in touch with my friends” - If that doesn’t make you want to get in touch with your best friend after not seeing them for a long time I don’t know what will haha

Omg but there was a surprise in Once Removed despite the structure! Several surprises. Like we didn’t know till nearly the end that the edgy woman was the hit man’s target the whole time, and hitting the blond woman instead was hilarious since it was she and her lover (the edgy woman’s husband) who hired him. And the only reason he was there was because the edgy woman brilliantly turned the address to Number 9 instead of 6. Surprise! 🤣

If I’m honest, as soon as Tommy and Len started arguing and Tommy revealed that he left to save Len’s life I started crying. Then the bombshell reveal rendered me a complete wreck. It’s one of the only episodes to make me cry.

I will definitely say the twist of Bernie Clifton's Dressing room has a twist much like series 2's 12 days of Christine and series 3's The devil of Christmas, it never fails to hit like a ton of bricks rendering the viewer heartbroken for Tommy and len

The first time I saw Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room, I was in tears. Absolute heartbreak. I've re-watched it a zillion times since then and it always hits so hard. What really underpins the emotional heft of the episode for me is knowing Reece and Steve's real life relationship, both personal and professional. It's like a glimpse into an alternative timeline where we didn't get the artistic and creative powerhouse duo we all enjoy today. And to me, that's terrifying. And beyond tragic. Their bond they share is what drives this story as it makes it all just too real for comfort. Hands down, one of my top three Inside No. 9 episodes out of any they've done. Destroys me every time.

Season 4 may just be my favourite season of the show. And the Winner is… and Tempting Fate are definitely weaker (but not bad) episodes however the other episodes more than make up for it Zanzibar is my ultimate comfort episode Bernie Clifton’s Dressing Room is my 2nd favourite episode behind Christine Once Removed is brilliant and I personally love the structure And To Have to Hold is brilliantly well done and dark

I actually enjoyed the Once Removed episode. I think it was the fact that when you do watch it again and and seeing props etc being in the place because of what happened before is very clever. Dramatically maybe not so much I agree and an assassin just assuming a number of a house is good enough? but the best episode of the series is definitely Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room (who I actually met at a firms presentation gala - Bernie Clifton, not the dressing room) Also I believe Reece said he would want the Tears of Laughter song played at his own funeral

I actually love “And the winner is...”. I know it’s one of the least popular and least liked, but to me the dialogue was funny, witty and clever, the performances - quite good and I didn’t see the twist coming. I have rewatched it and still love it. Just my personal (and obviously unpopular) opinion. As for the others - I laughed a lot during Zanzibar, Bernie Clifton’s was awesome, I quite like Once removed, To have and to hold was unexpected and heavy; Tempting fate had some great moments.

Possibly my favourite series of Inside No. 9 - the most consistent in terms of high quality writing and acting, interesting concepts and experiments in form. My favourite episode is probably Once Removed, just had a whale of a time watching it and it's very fun to revisit. Zanzibar is also lots of fun and I'd argue more successful and entertaining than Wuthering Heist which is possibly the most similar to it. To Have and To Hold is disturbingly effective, Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room so moving and heartwarming. For me, And The Winner Is... doesn't quite work but is still an enjoyable watch. Tempting Fate I remember liking at the time but it hasn't really stuck in my head so need to revisit it.

I can respect your dislike of the writing gimmick but this is another example (in once removed) of the brilliance in the duo’s ability to weave a tale. To be able to write backwards is not as easy as it seems. You can’t just write the story forwards and cut it up, each segment needs a structure of its own and enough detail needs to be in play to pay off the previous detail. That’s the point of it and what is the mind blowing element.
@UnleashTheGhouls
@UnleashTheGhouls 2 года назад
I totally understand the point of that writing style, and Steve and Reece knocked it out the park doing that writing style, I'm just personally not a fan of that writing style which doesn't reflect on the brilliance of Steve and Reece, it's more of a preference thing

Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room feels like a terrifying callback to Dec's alcohol problem, as well as that of many other oldschool and current day comedians that we might never know about. It's often the funny ones that have fucked up lives.

I find it really impressive when americans manage to make coherent reviews of No. 9, pemberton and shearsmith rely on so many very specific british references, I'm surprised americans can follow certain episodes at all, and the episode which included characters from psychoville - I'm not sure what anyone who hadn't seen that series would make of that episode, although it still works as a stand-alone, as do all no. 9 episodes

The twist of And the winner is... was just so stupid. Like the actress wouldve barely swung the vote, she gave a better review to another actress than herself.

That's technically why it isn't stupid. Barely anyone was planning to listen to the dim-witted member of the public so would be slightly more inclined not to vote for the one that she liked most.

(spoilers) I think that this was, out of the 7 that are out so far, the best season of the show. I didn't find any of the episodes to be especially bad, and the first 3 were, in my opinion, firmly in the show's top 10 best episodes. Episode 5 was sort of sitcom-ish and the twist wasn't great but I found the humor to be very witty at times. I liked the gag of Paula just bullshitting the entire time having not watched any of the films.

Great video, although not at all sure how you can claim the "momento" style in the 3rd episode doesn't have any surprises, how in the first 10 minutes do you get the idea that he's a hired ki ller that's come to the wrong house, due to an affair and actually neither of them love in the house.
@UnleashTheGhouls
@UnleashTheGhouls 2 года назад
The Memento style adds CONTEXT to what you've already seen, but you ultimately know the fate of the characters because you've already seen what happens later, which for me removes some suspense from certain scenes, is what I mean by this Alex! :) glad to hear you enjoyed the video other than this point though!

Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room - to me, I find this episode very meta. The fact that the real life duo are a double-act per se even though they do not go around with the cliche monikers, such as Hale & Pace, Ant & Dec etc. I just viewed the episode as if it was about Steve and Reece themselves - I didn't see Cheese & Crackers. I am sorry if this will sound morbid, but it will be a sad day if and when one of them passes away in real life because they are a great pairing and now I am thinking of Diddle Diddle Dumpling, they are a twosome and belong and go together. I am also thinking about when Steve Pemberton won his BAFTA and he hugged Reece Shearsmith before collecting his accolade, which makes the BCD even more bittersweet. I will go around in blissful ignorance thinking Shearsmith's tears in the episode were real. By the way, your commentary of this episode was emotional.
