Did you maybe miss the fact that the protagonist from Mr King is the same character as in Tom and Gerri? It's implied by the fact he had a nervous breakdown in his last job.

For me Wise Owl was by far my favourite of the series, the mixing of the animated sections into the story were so creepy and brilliant, exactly what I wanted going into the episode. The ending was really powerful and cathartic, I even found myself getting emotional. It might be my favourite no 9

Agree this has probably been the darkest series of the show (even series 3 had Empty Orchestra) but what an amazing series. My favourite was definitely 'A Random Act of Kindness' (just a note Reece's character was not a rival scientist but Zach's partner in developing time travel who he betrayed in order to go back and save his mother). Such a haunting episode for the reasons you give . I did love 'Merrily merrily as a league of Gentlemen reunion and knowing that the three gents have been close friends for over 30 years since uni made the themes hit even harder for me personally .

I am pretty sure that in Kid/Nap she wasn't having two affairs simultaneously but rather just convinced Daniel Mays' character to split the money when he was about to cut her ears off. At the end they drive off and she alludes to the idea that they're flying somewhere remote, but as mentioned earlier Daniel Mays' character doesn't have a passport, so she probably wasn't expecting to actually leave with him.

Admittedly I wasn’t the biggest fan of Mr King. It wasn’t a fault of the episode but I just hate the Wicker Man story as I hate cults and rituals and sacrifices etc Nine Lives Kat was also kinda mixed However, I loved the other four episodes. Merrily Merrily was one of my favourite character studies and Kid/Nap was a ton of fun and had a great presentation with the split screen. A Random Act of Kindness was engaging throughout with a twist which I didn’t think would work but it was pulled off incredibly well The best episode by far though is Wise Owl. It was horrifically dark but so well done and I loved the hopeful note it ended on. The animation was incredible and the episode had one of Reece’s best performances Overall, Series 7 was fantastic for me

For what I think happened in Kid/Nap is that The Wife actually manage to convince Daniel May’s character to work with her and there was a time jump between when he’s about to cut her ear and the police getting the recording of her scream.

This is by far my favourite show (perhaps bias because of pemberton and shear smith) and while I appreciate that the show is going to get worse with each series, presumably, the show has continued through 7 seasons and still finds ways to twist each episodes in a way that amazes me each time. Wasn’t a fan of Nine Lives Kat for the reasons you said and also think the final twist in merrily merrily really weakened the episode which was a shame because I was liking it up to that point. But I loved a random act of kindness, Kidnap and Mr King, 3 top quality episodes and on a rewatch I think I’ll probably appreciate wise owl a bit more because I seem to have missed some of the plot threads that I usually catch in a second viewing

Wow, this video was put together quickly! Generally liked this series (certainly more than the rather weak series 6 that preceded it) but agree that Nine Lives Kat didn't quite work, and I also wasn't a huge fan of Kid/Nap which felt like wasted potential to me and just seemed to be retreading old ground. So in essence I agree with your opinion! You can't accuse Steve and Reece of not being ambitious though, trying to fit a whole time travel narrative into 30 minutes and doing some meta commentary on the writing process. Mr King was a very creepy highlight of the series, as was Wise Owl. I thought A Random Act of Kindness was a really strong episode too, and very emotionally engaging. And all of the acting across the series was great. I think Pemberton has slightly more range than Shearsmith but as you say, they're both fantastic performers and writers. My episode ranking for this series would be: 1. A Random Act of Kindness 2. Wise Owl 3. Mr King 4. Merrily Merrily 5. Nine Lives Kat 6. Kid/Nap

Watch it 3 times straight, still getting the chill from the Corn King and Human beans... On a separate note, whats with the ongoing implication of child abuse throughout the whole series? Absolutely this. Before they even board the pedalo, at 4:22 when Larry pulls Darren aside, he reprimands him for bringing Donna, as Larry “wanted it to be just the four of US” while doing a hand motion implying those around them (as opposed to the mysterious stranger on the opposite side of the river) but we know he’s not referring to Donna so who is this fourth? Darren’s response of “it is” gave me a proper laugh, but this interaction solidified the tone and my suspicion of Lawrence bc I believed he thought there was another person with them. Granted I did not have a clue who that was or why or what or how, as per usual in most Nos. 9, but it made the dead wife’s ashes contextual for me, not wedged in at all. Also another was how precious he was being with his backpack instead of reaching a hand to steady Donna while she was moving to the front seat.

To me the ending of Mr King was extremely predictable. I've never even seen the wickerman, but I know media usually doesn't portray small towns in a positive light. From the beginning I was thinking it would head two ways. Either showing the dangers of teaching terrifying things like Climate Change to small impressionable children (Which is probably one of the big reasons why so many teens nowadays are very depressed) Or your typical "small town scary" plot, which it sadly turned out to be. Like oh wow, they were a cult all along? Never saw that one coming. Not like I saw Hot Fuzz or like the creators of this series literally made another series about a scary small town. The way you hyped it up I was pretty damn disappointed to be honest. Oh well.
