if u look closely you'll realize that joy is only in control during childhood. They showed anger being in control inside the father's head, and sadness in control in mom's head, disqust in pizza worker, fear inside cool girl's mind

THANK you. I'm glad someone noticed. Other people have told me I read too much into that, but I'm sure it was deliberate. Which actually has implications for the father character. Sure he's loveable and dopey with Riley, but he seems to have a deep-seated anger in him that can come out sometimes.

I figured joy was in charge since she was the first emotion Riley felt, she appeared first. So maybe the mother felt sadness at birth, thus making sadness the leader
@rissarae3
@rissarae3 7 лет назад
Multihuntr0 I wouldn't say he's an angry person or that's all Anger's role is as leader. As the bread winner of the house and in a profession that I take it he's has to hustle to make money joy, disgust, sadness, and definitely fear could in no way take charge like anger. Anger's role is to make sure things are fair, he wants to make sure he's not getting short changed and that his family is first no matter what. The Mom has Sadness as her leader because like in the movie Sadness doesn't just mean depression. Sadness is in tuned with how others feel. As the nurturing one (being a mother) she is always there to make sure Riley is okay. Sadness picks on Riley's emotions and works to make her better.

The mom and dad are not Reilly, so that is no way indicative that Reilly will become as her parents. Just know that a person's past experiences can shape thier personality and the emotions they lean onto. Reilly doesn't share histories with her parents.

People don't realise how much damage they do by trying to prevent all negative emotions especially with our children. I try to handle my children's negative emotions by reminding them that their emotions are there's to feel. I really think you can't couch Inside Out in the "Hero/Villian" binary of storytelling. Ultimately I think it's one of those "man vs self" stories - a coming of age tale where the character ultimately learns an important lesson about themselves over the course of the story.

I guess in a way joy is both the hero and the villain. She wants what's best for Riley but she gets it wrong. Sadness being drawn to those memories is Riley's way of Turing those memories into sad/depressed ones but joy refuses to let sadness do that which causes her spiralling out of control and almost losing herself.... This movie is so amazing. It's so different from any other movie. It's so funny and clever and makes your heart break all within that hour and some.

Wait...are you saying feelings can have feelings?
@ShadyDoorags
@ShadyDoorags 8 лет назад
Yes, Joy is wrong, but you can't really call her a villain. Throughout Riley's life, every emotion wanted Riley to feel happy. The other emotions, including Sadness, allowed Joy to take the wheel and lead the way most of the time. When Sadness's actions began causing unexplained problems during the worst possible time, naturally being the one everyone looked to, Joy said "Don't touch anything until we figure this out." Sadness disobeyed, and Joy reacted to the situation. Her actions were self-serving, yes, but again, all the emotions wanted Riley to feel happy so they would be just as guilty. The only time Joy does anything that seems villainous is when she genuinely abandons sadness. If we go down this route, we actually paint the mom as the villain. Joy was actually learning to let the other emotions take over until the mom points out how thankful she is that Riley was able to keep a smile on her face. But again, do we really call someone a villain just because they unintentionally create a problem? The antagonist of the movie is life itself, both for Riley and for the emotions.

@JIYkp
@JIYkp 8 лет назад
+Shady Doorags They didn't want happiness for Riley, they wanted what was best for her. Joy commandeered the group into believing she was the most important, but she isn't. Also, you're missing the point. The reason sadness was coming out in awkward situations was because Riley never got the chance to explore those feelings in her own time. This would be a criticism of her parents' parenting style.
@Yous0147
@Yous0147 8 лет назад
+Shady Doorags Exactly, Joy wasn't evil. She was merely wrong, misguided. In the end she understands her mistake and corrects them, which is exctly what makes the difference between moral and immoral people imo. Everything else with the video was spot on though. The moview was great, although they could've put a bit more emphasis on the struggle between Sadness and Joy inside Riley, or moreso show it in a way where people see it in reference to why Riley is actually doing what she's doing. In that sense though, the movie did very well still.

@frankocathail9390
@frankocathail9390 8 лет назад
+Shady Doorags Actually the other emotions are part of Riley's subconscious mind and so they only really want what Riley wants. And it's quite obviously and repeatedly portrayed that Riley's mother and father try and force Riley to always be happy. To me it was quite obvious that Joy is the Antagonist...

Not everything has a villain. There are conflicts sure, but not always a villain. Yes, Joy creates the conflict, but nothing about her makes her a 'villain'. She is conquering a flaw she has. It revolves around a personal internal conflict she has as a character.

after viewing all the inside commentary of the film makers, the conclusion i draw from Inside Out is this simplified 1. joy is undoubtably the bad guy 2. joy doesnt know it, shes just trying to overachieve in her job 3. every adults emotions actually discuss what to do, where joy in Riley just dictates everyone, which is representative of Rileys own naievity and simplistic decision making indicitive in emotionally driven kids 4. nobody defends Sadness at any point, everyone just accepts that Sadness is pushed away by force. We see this manifest in the real world when Rileys mom asks her to be happy in liu of being sad. Therefore the parents are likely very much at fault for perpetuating a "sadness is bad" american dream thing 5. Rileys parents are in no way crappy. We see time and time again how supportive of Rileys growth and interests theyve been, how "for there" theyve been (such as when she lost that hockey game Sadness reminices about) and that her needs are fulfilled at all times, and grows into a wonderful person. The only time any of this changed is when the dad tries to scale up his professional life, likely striving to provide an even better life for his family and unfortunately hit a couple roadblocks along the way in due no fault of his own. 6. Imagine how different the movie would have been, how different it would have looked if the move went smoothly? Rileys clearly never had to deal with so much going wrong all at once, but it's not like their stuff is gone or destroyed, it just got delayed, forcing the entire family to live a couple days without the things to help improve the dreariness of their surroundings

Now that I've watched this video, here are my immediate rebukes. 1) Bing Bong's decision to sacrifice himself to help Joy get out of the Memory Dump was fueled by his realization and acceptance of the fact that Riley was done with him, and he made the decision before Joy could could have any say in the matter. 2) Joy being antagonistic towards Sadness stemmed from the fact that, for most of the movie, Joy had absolutely no idea how important Sadness is, a fact that was made clear within the first five minutes of the movie. This fact was present because Joy only looked at the direct effects Sadness had on Riley, and not the the indirect effects on the people around Riley, so it's more a case of ignorance rather than actual malice that was designed to be a jab at things that go on in real life. 3) At least Joy wasn't a, "Let me handle everything," type of control freak. Hey, she DID manage to figure out how to fit Fear, Disgust, and Anger into her plan for the first day of school.
@mrpurple11
@mrpurple11 7 лет назад
Suzduko667 at first the video looks like a way to justify the idea of Joy being the villian in the structure of good vs bad in most movies. Before watching, based on the title alone, I agree Joy ys the villain of the story and that is how I have always seen it. She single handedly repressed Sadness (trapped her in the circle, didnt allow her to dk anything, forced her to read repeatedly the same user manuals, etc.) and destroyed the islands of personality when she lost the memories. Then she blames Sadness for everything. Let's see the video and see if you can reinforce this idea or if you will sway me to see other points of view ☺

+supperandjazz You're absolutely right. This video talks as if the protagonist has to be PERFECT or else they're the villain. The whole point of the movie is to show how Joy slowly realises that she's not the central element of Riley's life anymore, as Riley grows up from the simple child that just wants to be happy all the time into a more complex human being with the vast problems in teenage and later life.
@traceacex
@traceacex 8 лет назад
+supperandjazz I was thinking along the same lines. I don't think any emotion was meant to be villainized as all of them are important and are meant to work together (which in turn symbolizes Riley growing up and becoming more mature with more complicated feelings that aren't just made up of one emotion but multiple ones), which is literally the plot of the entire movie. I always read Joy's pushiness is the result of Riley's good childhood - kids SHOULD feel joy most of all when they're young...which is also why I think Joy learning about the importance of the other emotions reflects Riley learning it's okay to not be okay sometimes. She wasn't FORCED to think this way, she just never was in a situation where so much was going wrong at once. The way her family memories were set up, it honestly looks like this is her first big emotional challenge and it's why Joy also is finding herself being challenged for the first time.

The thing is that her parents ingrained that on her, and society ingrained it on them. There isnt a villain, there doesnt need to be, in a sense, there never is. There are ideas that dont work, whose application on the world produces unhappiness, one of them is "you have to be happy all the time." Villains are usually guys possesed with one of these harmful ideas, like "if i conquer the world, then ill finally feel safe, or happy, or powerful, will deserve to be loved" or something like that

Joy is only mad at sadness because she thought she was going to be the only emotion then sadness popped up shortly after. Not sure why she got mad at sadness for "corrupting" the core memory, when joy had actually done the same to the hockey memory. The memory was only happy at the end, not at the beginning, it was sadness's memory. At first it was a sad memory and because of outside forces the memory became a joyful one. And really she should be called optimism rather than joy. Simply because she tried seeing the bright side. This emotion should of been called happiness. Anger, Fear, Sadness, Disgust, Happiness. Core Emotions.

3:05 This is a common misconception. It's believed that people seek therapy and go on medication because they're just not "happy". While many people often seek therapy because they are unsatisfied with their lives, just about every mental health professional would tell you that it is unrealistic to expect to be happy all of the time. Therapists help us rationalize and cope with both negative and positive emotions, and medication stabilizes the fluctuation of mood in those that need it. Drugs are not prescribed arbitrarily to keep us from experiencing sadness. They are not prescribed to numb the population or stifle creativity. They are for people with unstable neurochemistry. While I do agree that there is a huge societal pressure "just be happy" and a negative stigma on mental illness, blaming the mental health field is simply inaccurate.

Joy isn't the villain. She is not evil nor have evil ambitions (which defines a villain). She just wants Riley to have a fulfilling life. And by that she initially thought it includes suppressing negative emotions, sadness in particular (which would have dire consequences later on). It makes sense because the society we live in today also misinterpret sadness (and other negative emotions) as an "illness" or simply a "bad thing". Some of us, if not all are like this too, its becoming a norm to not accept any negative emotion. It also makes sense for Joy to lead most of the time (making her look selfish), because being happy most of your life is a path to a healthy and fulfilling life. However, that does not mean one should deny negative emotions - a mistake Joy initially did which she later corrected it.

Yeah, if someone is being a d*ckhead in school or other situations, you should be the one solving the problem in whatever way you see fit, with some limited rules (not including superficial violence), as solving the social problems of others artificially is not doing said people any favours, they will not learn from the experience to effectively manage it. A personal example being when there was a pair of people being intolerably annoying, so i kicked them on several occasions, but we, naturally, at a later date decided to stay polite, and otherwise limit contact with each other to not let it out of hand.

@ShadyDoorags

+Frank Dantuono The parents were controlled by multiple emotions, but like Riley, the emotions let one particular lead. It's natural that a father dealing with work and having a daughter he loves would be lead by anger, a creature who wants to make sure life is fair. And it makes sense that a mother, who is constantly trying to feel sympathy for her daughter and support her working husband, would have sadness leading the charge. As to your question, if Joy were to be the antagonist (which I don't think she is because the story is more about her than it is Riley) than Riley or Sadness would be the protagonist. In order for Joy to be the antagonist, she must be the acting force against the protagonist. The protagonists are limited to Joy, Sadness and Riley, seeing how much of the story is dedicated to them. Joy is constantly acting against Sadness's actions which we later find out are what exactly what Riley needs. Of the two, due to her direct and constant interactivity with Joy, Sadness would therefore be the protagonist.
@LegendLeaguer

The parents each had all 5 emotions, they just all dressed/looked like Anger or Sadness. And Riley was the only person to have mixed-gender emotions when everyone else had single gender emotions. +tieltavisvt The problem is that often the role of villain is the person who does bad, and often the reason for this isn't thought of. The idea that a hero can't be the villain is completely wrong: look no further than examples of antiheroes through the ages.
@TranquilOblivion
@TranquilOblivion 8 лет назад
+Ultimatus 821 That's true. It could be that Joy was a villain if she didn't realise her mistakes. However, she did, and it wasn't too late. There's a difference between an evil villain who just ruins things, and a flawed protagonist who gradually figures out the right path.
@SnakeMaster
@SnakeMaster 8 лет назад
The dictionary definition of villain is "1. a cruelly malicious person who is involved in or devoted to wickednessor crime; scoundrel. 2. a character in a play, novel, or the like, who constitutes an important evil agency in the plot." Therefore Joy cannot be a villain since she does not have malicious intent. Antagonist, on the other hand, means "1. a person who is opposed to, struggles against, or competes with another; opponent; adversary. 2. the adversary of the hero or protagonist of a drama or other literarywork:" This makes more sense because Joy competes with Sadness. Joy is an opponent to Sadness despite not being evil, so she is an antagonist and not a villain.

Actually there has been a lot of investigation into such medication in recent years and evidence is mounting that shows that the negative effects often outweigh the positive and many, many cases of people being prescribed something totally inappropriate for their condition. It seems more and more often that GPs will prescribe generic medications rather than working with a person to get to the root of their issues. Corporations are getting rich off of other people's mental health issues.

I think society doesn't expect happiness from us so much as it expects us to be _functional_ - when you're happy you're doing your job and contributing, whereas if you're *too* angry or *too* sad you aren't and may even be disrupting others. Heck, people who are miserable but functional are technically contributing just as much as a happy person because they do their work, keep their mouths shut about any injustices society inflicts upon them and consume potentially _more_ in order to "fill the hole" that their misery is causing. The need to seem happy is, I think, actually based in fear of society rejecting you as nonfunctional or disruptive and replacing you with someone who isn't; hence in the film Riley's mom telling her to seem happy so as not to distract her father.
@danielsandoval8345
@danielsandoval8345 8 лет назад
Society encourages us to pursuit our own happiness; however, it's not society's fault if you have to make yourself happy and avoids you if you don't. This need of "happiness" in society is that individuals often view happiness of pleasure and joy as a better state to be in than in a stare of pain and suffering. If I or anyone were to see someone unhappy or suffering then of course that will affect the utility of societal happiness in a negative way. Emotions are emotions, and we need them, but happiness should be our goal for if not then the individual wouldn't be living a fulfilling life. Now, whom to say what is the way to live a fulfilling life is completely up to you to decide, but as far as I'm concerned all these emotions outside of joy are to signify a state of pain or suffering. And this is not a state that all of us wish to be in forever. I know it happens but if we let it rule our lives than "you" as a individual has failed yourself for letting something get the best of you where human endeavorment has taught us to rise to the call and overcome these troubles.

I actually think that Sadness is the villain. its actually Sadness's fault. she's the one who made Riley cry about her memories in class, which made a Sad Core Memory, and Joy didn't approve of this, since she didn't want Riley to grow up to be some crazy emotional person, and took the Core Memory into Long Term Memory, Sadness didn't understand and tried to stop Joy, they argued with the Core Memory a bit, and then they eventually got lost. "Can I say that curse word now?" -Anger :3
@derfunkity6432
@derfunkity6432 8 лет назад
I think one of the main points of the movie was that pathologizing negative emotions (e.g., "some crazy emotional person") is a harmful stance to take, because it denies the reactions that we could very understandably have to our life circumstances, and deprives us of the useful functions that those emotions serve (such as prompting social support or providing us with important information about our needs). Therapists see this in their work a lot; in many circumstances, an intense desire to avoid experiencing or expressing negative emotions can lead to behaviors (e.g., alcohol abuse, social isolation) that exacerbate the problem. Largely because we are afraid of being "some crazy emotional person." It's totally understandable to want to be happy all of the time (since it feels good), but given the way the world works, it's rarely feasible.

She's not the "villain", she's simply a representation of the fact that society expects us to be happy all the time, which you also touch upon. In the end of the movie (if I remember correctly), she realises that it's okay to have other emotions. She's not evil, she's just ignorant at the beginning of the movie when Riley is still young, but gets more mature as Riley grows up.

+Archê Nyx I don't think it's evil. Ignorance is just lack of knowledge which can be fixed by knowledge and cognitive maturity. It has nothing to do with how good you are. Joy is the villain, but it's because she belittles, shuns, and openly mocks someone (Sadness) for being different. Sadness doesn't do anything wrong yet she is hated by Joy. In fact, Sadness is right for most of the movie. She's doing the correct actions, she knows where to go, she knows what to do, but Joy won't listen. Joy is still friends with Anger, Fear, and Disgust (all emotions that would ruin the happiness of a situation), but Sadness is forced to sit in the back where she "belongs". Joy is just a terrible person.
@billlupin8345
@billlupin8345 8 лет назад
+Preston Poland To be fair, it's not that sadness is "different," it's that sadness seems to harm Riley, seeming only to make her miserable. Joy's got it backwards, it's Riley's misery that causes sadness to touch things. Sadness isn't harming Riley; making her cry serves a purpose. It's a way to get help. You see someone crying, instinctively, you want to help.
@caseyj5637

+Preston Poland no she's not? She doesn't mocks Sadness because she's different, she just doesn't let her take over because she thinks that Sadness doesn't have a purpose and is harmful to Riley.

Joy, Marlin and even Woody in the first Toy Story movie fall under the term of antagonist much better, as they resented the protagonist or something about the protagonist to the point of unintentionally causing a lot of problems.

Bing Bong was doomed to die anyways, imaginary friends leave us when we lose our childish innocence. Joy's and Sadness's journey was arguably necessary for Riley to come to terms with her situation. As a privileged child with great parents, friends and neighborhood Riley has simply never had much reason to be unhappy. Joy and Sadness not being in headquarters let Riley go through her other emotions which all culminated in sadness (the last part being essential as it prevented her from sinking into depression as a self-defense mechanism from her internal pain).

I felt that Joy is a misguided aspect of Riley's own personality. and Riley is an impressionable young child who's going through the troubles of growing up and learning to understand her emotions. All children must learn that it's okay to be sad, angry, disgusted or fearful or else they won't really be free to experience joy.

No. Joy isn't the bad guy because the movie doesn't have a bad guy - as Thomas Schatz would say - it's not a movie about contested space, it's an integration type movie (two different characters learn to live together, like a rom-com)

I agree with this video. Joy was pretty unfair to poor sadness; she might be the 'leader' but she acted more like a dictator, especially towards Sadness who basically had to stay in one spot without doing anything! thankfully she learned from her mistakes, otherwise Inside Out would have been a much darker movie.

I like that way. I freakin hate it when I make a comment about somthing, and when it is not a happy comment, but rather a very cynical one I get hated on, that I am just a sad person who should get help. In my opinion this whole world is pretty sad, and pretty much has a huge absense of happiness, where it actually is a luxuary. I hate it when everything gets sugarcoated, and put in a light of pure happiness, when in fact you have to close your eyes from so much to see that happiness. Don't get me wrong. I do not seek to be sad or cynical, but I just hate to lie to myself, and when things are sad or I am too I will not make it look happy so the mood does not fall apart.

The problem with casting Joy as the accidental villain because of the "happiness industry" is that Riley wasn't told "you need to be happy". She was told "thank you for trying to stay positive despite our week being crappy". She internalized the idea that she needed to put on a happy facade, but it wasn't beaten into her head every other scene. At the end of the film when Riley finally let her sadness take over, she cried because she missed what in her mind was her true home, not their material possesions. Additionally, the film was obviously a metaphor for the onset of puberty, a time in our lives when our emotions grow and become more complex. To a child, happiness is the only emotion that's worth feeling, but as her mother and father's minds demonstrate, sadness (empathy) and anger (justice) can lead the mind in cooperation with the other emotions to create stability. Also, idk if you noticed, but the metaphor was deconstructed even more by the fucking "puberty" button.

Joy is the embodiment of Seratonin and Dopamine which are the brain's chemicals that say, 'it's okay to stop hiding, the saber toothed tiger is gone and you can relax and be happy now.' She's not a nazi, she's a hippie. Who has a lot of enthusiasm because she runs the childhood. If you'll notice the adults are missing a Joy character, or the Joy character has taken a subordinate roll to Sadness or Anger.

Even within the logic of the film, without considering the external causes of "unhappiness " and the "happiness industry," Joy essentially wants the girl to remain emotionally stunted. I always saw the film's basic message as being, growing up brings with it much more emotional complexity and it's healthy to be sad or angry or afraid sometimes.

Happiness isn't smiling or laughing. It is feeling content and well at the very centre of your self. I'd say that you can be distressed and have happiness at the same time because emotions may also be the result of impulse in response to stimuli. Though of course this is only my opinion on the matter based of perceived understanding.

Well, yeah, That's how I interpreted the movie in the first place, But I wouldn't call Joy a Villain; after all, she was making honest mistakes, she thought she was doing the right thing. Joy represents the part of Riley that swallowed that philosophy of forcing happiness at every moment. I felt that there's no need for a villain or a hero. All te characters are trying to manage a difficult life situation as they can; making mistakes, learning. That's what I like the most. Kind of like Miyazaki's films, In which he represents the opposing characters as humans, with motivations, feelings and points of view, just like the main characters. That sort of story feels more real, in a sense, for me. Great video.

Honestly, I think this film is way too complex to have traditional heroes and villains. I think that's part of the point, that emotions and people can't be distilled into such one dimensional forms of thought. Seeing film in a pure binary of good and evil doesn't allow for complex nuances, and it doesn't allow the film's true message to shine out. We are complex beings, and every emotion has its place. There is no true villain, because there are no true villains in life, only situations that don't meet our liking. Riley is the real protagonist of the film, and the inside part is just proving a literalized metaphor for how her emotional journey is playing out. The "villain" of the film is the external circumstance, not any one emotion.
