The last 10 years are a perfect replay of Germany, eastern Europe, and the Balkans in the ten years to 1938/40. Paraphrasing Churchill, the abandonment of Czechoslovakia in 1938 was the most dishonourable act ever done by otherwise honourable men in the history of the west, just as self-disarmament and neglect of Empire after 1918 was Britain's most foolish. 85 years on what have we had from Putin's Russia? Among other horrors, total annexation of the Crimea and an amorally bloody invasion of the Ukraine; now "the worker's paradise" brings us a very bloody campaign in Syria and (let's be honest) Iraq. People in the west can't read maps today any more than they read, so we have to add that Syria and through there north-western Iraq are right at the edge of Europe. Daily bombing in Syria serves Russia no other purpose than to cynically disrupt all of Europe and whatever remains of the Balkans. It is _cynical_ because it throws tens of thousands of lives away and creates a huge humanitarian crisis. Worse for all of us, it creates new routes for radical Islamists to go from the battlefields of Syria right up into eastern and western Europe. So if 2016 is like eastern Europe in 1938/39, what have we been doing? America has had NO foreign policy for 8-10 years except to get itself out of Afghanistan. A rather good British government spent needless energy on a breakaway Scotland, kissing up to China for trade deals that would have gone to Britain anyway, dealing with endless stupidity from the other parties, and an increasingly isolationist public. And Europe, well if a mix of Marxist (ah, that would be France) and moderate-left (Germany and the Lowlands) governments can not keep themselves on the rails alone, what makes them think it can all be done from The Hague? Survival without NATO with someone like Putin next door... not a chance. Margaret Thatcher once said she saw in Putin "the eyes of a killer." My impression of him is more a sense of smell... the stench of corpses in the punishment block of The Lubyanka.

Also, Ukraine wasn't only joining EU, but also and more importantly NATO.

Nothing like this is happening in the US.
