Near the Gulf of Mexico and the Bayou is a part of the country where the locals move to a different tune. This is Southern Louisiana, an America steeped in a culture that started before the founding of the country. Here they have their unique food and traditions, and for many of the elders, their own language. Join me as we meet the Cajuns who call this place home.

We need more people like this to keep our country going forward,this is the true way of living. Big Ag companies are the ones using whatever is cheapest to produce as quickly as possible at the cost of the consumers! Nothing good comes from Monopolizing farming Keep up the great work,Peter! Watching from Germany. Peter's video's changed my view about America: there are still many "normal", very nice people to be found. Completely different from the view you get from the regular media, where I find most people just a bit out of touch with things that really matter. Allen is really a great, great guy: respect.

Unfortunately most conventional media sources exist to further their narrative, and they only show a very curated, narrow view of a culture/country/people. What I have found is that the vast majority of people are just "normal" people, out doing their thing, according to their local customs. In North America, both Canada and the USA, most people, especially rural folk, are very accommodating, friendly, resourceful and generally don't focus on politics. They have their opinions and will share them but it doesn't stop them from having a good conversation. Just don't tell them how to live.

That’s nice and all, but they are lying about us not wanting to work. They are outsourcing jobs to cheap labor while telling lies that we don’t want to work. Maybe be time he’ll interview a Cajun who isn’t a farmer and see how we had to leave the thick rural areas to find work and a home. Because no one in the sticks is selling their land and they are fracturing Cajun culture with their own greed.

Yeah I like him. I have no issue with people like him coming here, not at all. I feel bad for him. How upsetting it must be to do things the right way and see people basically rewarded for doing it the wrong way. Jose does it by the rules. He may have been born with the connections or rose up and maintained his status. He repeatedly pays for the privilege by working hard, making the fees, and pleasing the rule makers. The poor, without the connections or money, even if they can work hard, will be denied the privilege by the coercive rule makers. Most of the rules the farmer complains about are from the same rulers. There's also a little coercive competition control as well.

Im a Louisiana native living up north, years ago i had a flat in indiana. I was on the side of the road, clearly struggling when a car passed me and turned into a drive 200 feet away. I told my niece, "if i was in Louisiana, 3 cars would have stopped to help by now. Just then, a work van full of men pulled up and offered to change my tire. Us Americans just want the people that come here to love America and to want to be American. Bring your culture but also embrace ours. Instead of being divided we want to be neighbors but we also don’t want people pouring in and demanding money. That’s what really pisses people off. But if you come here and work hard and add something to our neighborhoods and learn English and fly our flag high then welcome to America brother. Glad to have you.

Appalachia series had me thinking is that the new retirement place? The land in a lot of those places is so cheap. I saw on zillow they had like a compound with sick mountain views tucked way back that if you didn't know any better you would not realize there was even a house back there from the road. A garage with insect screen converted to a mancave, a separate garage for all his toys like 4 wheelers etc, a pool and a hot tub in a 3 bedroom 2 bath manufactured home (this was the only downside to me) for like $150,000. I'm a single man with no children about to enter my 40s. To me that sounds like one sweet cheap place to retire to with all the toys you could ever want lol. The only thing is I wouldn't want to be so deep in Appalachia that it's going to take me 20+ minutes to get to the grocery store. I kind of want a hybrid best of both worlds, where I can drive into town that has everything I want but be only like 5-10 mins away or less.

We've been coming down from the Eastern Shore of Maryland for the past few years every August/September to go gator hunting. This part of the country is something that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime because while the videos and pictures are beautiful, to actually be there in person is on another level. Being isolated in those back bayous and farm land, is almost a state of euphoria and feels like you're on another planet. It's the most peaceful and tranquil place that I have ever experienced and cleanses the soul. The people are the nicest you'll ever meet and the food is the best we've ever had. Can't wait to go back down and spend time where everyone feels like family and takes care of each other no matter the circumstances.

I would love to buy more local, but yes, Big Ag makes it hard. Farmers markets are important to frequent, if you're lucky enough to have one around. The best thing to do these days is community gardens, co-ops, or a backyard garden. Few chickens, maybe a goat. Depending on the restrictions for your county. I do have one local farmer I can buy beef from. However, we would need a freezer. They only sell 1/4, 1/2, or whole cows.

@jKLa

Really without doing the work first, there's no way to ever get into many of those positions unless one is truly wealthy first. These farmers do rely on migrant labor or guestworkers for the majority of field work but most are also working in the field themselves and if they have son's they teach them the work too. In other fields like landscaping or tree trimming, most of the small companies in the majority of California are now owned as well as operated by Mexicans. You get Anglo small owners where you still have many Anglo workers too, -pretty much from the North SF bay area northward or inland in the Valley and eastward.
@jKLa
@jKLa 2 месяца назад
@@charrua59not really the issue though. The cost of living is a lot lower in most of Louisiana then in most of the US and the area is full of other equally low paying physically demanding jobs worked by American locals, including work on fishing and shrimping (not farmed) boats, service work, construction labor, some jobs in manufacturing and the oil industry (which also includes many high paying blue collar jobs) and even some types of farm work. Just not so much the crayfish harvest, much like with most large dairies or most fruit and vegetable vegetable harvist- the very most most labor intence yet simultaneously skilled and precise types of farm work. Americans often do other work just as physically hard or just as tedious, but relatively few these day seem to be able to do work that is both very strenuous but simultaneously precise, tedious and repetitive for long periods at an adequate pace within agriculture at least. Americans work on feedlots or do other livestock work plenty though, operate machinery and even do manual labor up in the blueberry and cranberry bogs up north.
@d.williamparris2516
@d.williamparris2516 2 месяца назад
Definitely agreed, but as the other comment said, I think cost of living is another factor, not the whole reason, but a big factor, the main factor I think is everyone was conditioned to go to college by older generations, they were taught after WWII that it was basically the same as being an adult, prior to that very few people had college degrees. That was the norm, now yeah, everyone wants to jump into that high paying job but somebody has to do manual labor too, not everyone can sit at a desk lol

Again, I must commend you on your videos. No one makes videos like you. You capture the essence of a culture. My wife is Cajun, and we spend much time in that area. We often go to Shuck's in Abbeville, a restaurant I'm sure you saw in your travels in the area. You do not give us a cursory look at the locals, but you give us an in-depth interview. I thank you, and my wife, especially, thanks you. You take her back to her roots with your videos.

"we don't rely on the government." I know the point he was trying to make was they do their best to look out for their neighbors. It's great that they want to help when others are in a tough situation, but the fact of the matter is, for a number of reasons, the people of Louisiana (and the state government of Louisiana) do rely heavily on the federal government for assistance. As someone who grew up in the rural deep south, I see this mentality a lot, when the simple truth is, for a lot of people, their lives would be much, much worse without that assistance.

I felt this video exemplified the experiences and life of my Francois Dumas and Marguerite Foy family. Coming to New France and living this same way. Francois, a Mason and Iroquoian interpreter was an indentured servant who earned his way into landownership. His wife was a Kings Daughter. I'm still learning of the history. After the Civil War the family moved into Vermont and New England areas. Life there was just as much as it was in New France and as depicted here in Louisianna. I'm certain I have distant relatives on both sides of my family down in that area. One day soon I hope to have it all written down for the rest of the family to see and know.
