By the mid-1970s, Sid Vicious was a fixture in London's punk circles both as a musician (he was a drummer for Siouxsie and the Banshees and Flowers of Romance) and as a symbol of the explicit anti-establishment movement (he reportedly invented its popular "pogo" dance).
In February 1977, the bad boy got his big chance when nominated to replace Glen Matlock as bassist of the Sex Pistols, then known for their 1976 hit "Anarchy in the U.K.," even though he didn't know a thing about playing the bass.
Shortly afterward, Spungen arrived in London. A groupie from the New York punk scene, she was generally regarded as loud, obnoxious and unlikeable, spurned by the other groupies and accepted by the musicians largely for her ability to procure heroin. She soon made a move on Sex Pistols frontman Johnny Rotten and, finding an unreceptive audience, turned her attention to Vicious.
In August 1978, the couple moved to New York City and set up in room No. 100 of Manhattan's Chelsea Hotel. By this point, Spungen was acting as Vicious' manager. Along with getting him gigs in her old Lower East Side haunts, she served as Vicious' spokesperson when he was too stoned to communicate in the occasional media appearance.
Their high-wire lifestyle came to an inevitable crash on the night of October 11. Hosting a party in their tiny room, Vicious swallowed about 30 tablets of Tuinal - a potent barbiturate mix - and was comatose for most of the night as guests came and went.
At around 11 a.m. the following morning, as the front desk began receiving calls of distress about the situation in room 100, a bellman discovered an underwear-clad Spungen on the floor, bleeding profusely from a knife wound to her abdomen. A dazed Vicious was found wandering in the hallway, reportedly wailing about how he killed her. He repeated that admission to the police before recanting, insisting that he didn't remember anything about the night.
Freed on bail, Vicious was powerless to withstand the overwhelming loss in his life and attempted suicide a few days later. After spending two months in the Riker's Island prison complex, he celebrated his release in February 1979 by sending his mother to score some heroin. On the morning of February 2, the punk icon was discovered dead from an overdose.
Nancy Spungen is buried at King David Cemetery in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. It is reported that Sid Vicious’s ashes were spread on her grave.

Hi Scott, I enjoy your channel. I lived in room 100 at the Hotel Chelsea for a year and a half in 2006-2007 with my girlfriend who had lived there for a decade. The two former hotel rooms plus the hallway kitchenette that made up our apartment are seen in the video. Our bedroom and bathroom were Sid and Nancy's room and as you depicted Nancy died on our bathroom floor. People say their spirits are still in that room but I never felt anything strange about being there. It was a massive NYC apartment and my girlfriend was lucky to have it.

I had a conversation with Nancy's mother in 1996. I felt so much sympathy for both her and Nancy. I don't know Sid's side. On another note, this makes me nostalgic for the Chelsea as it was. So happy I was able to stay there on multiple occasions. Very strange, wonderful and historic place. That crazy lobby with its odd paintings and hodge-page decor was amazing and one never knew who might be passing through there. I used to sit in the lobby to write since the wifi in the rooms was terrible, and I saw everything from rock stars to supermodels to a bald guy in a tutu. It was divine.

I ate at Centro Vasco often on that street in the early 80’s to 90 when I moved to Florida. I always thought that hotel was a dump or a place for the homeless lol bc of how it looked from the outside. Later found out it was famous for artists.

Thanks Scott. I read the book Nancy's mother wrote "And I Don't Want To Live This Life". The majority of it was about Nancy growing up with the latter part of the book about her and Sid. Nancy had a very rough life plagued by her untreated mental illness.

I liked the end of the movie made about them. After Nancy dies, and Sid was released by the police, he eats at a restaurant and then takes out walking. He dances for a bit with a couple of school boys and then a cab drives up. Nancy's ghost is in the back seat, looking beautiful. She and Sid smile at each other, he gets in the back seat with her, and the two drive off....presumably to Heaven. Great ending! 🌌🌈🚕

Thank you Scott for being fair in giving Sid the benefit of the doubt and honestly saying we don't know the truth of what really happened. There have been many theories and hypothesis about that night but truthfully the only thing we really can know for sure is that two deeply unstable and troubled young people came together for a tragically toxic relationship that ended in both of their deaths. This relationship has been far too romanticized and needs to be seen as the deeply volatile and sick, twisted drug fueled relationship it really was. The end video shows the harsh reality of just how not romantic the relationship truly was.

I don’t really think Sud killed her. I feel most likely one of the low life hanger ones saw them high as a kite that night and took the opportunity to take the money. Most likely Nancy wasn’t as out of it as they thought and tried to stop them so she was stabbed once in gut. That was all it took

It is somewhat related to another tragic, and doomed relationship. Bonnie and Clyde. So stange that the public buys into these types of relationships that have no regard for the very thing that keeps them going. Life! How can one person love another, but have zero regard for love of life? The relationship has no chance for a future, and how can a relationship be used as a disposable emotion? Do we look at it from a Romeo and Juliet perspective? There is no perfect love, it's out of reach for human beings. Yet everyone wants to find it. They won't on this planet!

As a kid in England the first punk I ever saw was when I was on a bus with my mother in Rugby Warwickshire. I remember thinking how cool the bondage-trousers and the mohican were. Ten minutes into this bus journey someone tapped my mother on the shoulder to point out that 'The Punk' with the loud transistor-radio sitting behind, was trying to set my mother's hair alight! Funny thing was, when the bus finally arrived at our village 'The Punk' got off the bus too, and his mum was there to meet him! My mother told her what her son was trying to do and she whacked him and smoothed his mohican flat after first spitting into her hand. THAT was 1977 folks. 🇬🇧

I read the book Nancy's mom wrote. It's truly heartbreaking. The mom was a student (majoring in foreign languages) when she got pregnant with Nancy. She had to abandon her studies, get married and raise her family( Nancy and two siblings). Nancy was diagnosed as schizophrenic when she was 15 but the doctors never shared the diagnosis with her family. They only learned about it after Nancy's death.

She didn't see things hallucinations, she didn't hear voices, she didn't speak in a word salad; she had some unrealistic/inaccurate perceptions about herself and the world around her, but she wasn't 'delusional' in the literal, medical sense. Schizophrenia just doesn't make any sense. Her known symptoms were explosive temper tantrums that occassionally turned violent, manipulative and disruptive behavior, wild mood swings, an inability to regulate her emotions, a consistent feeling of agitation that led her to seek hyperstimulation. She frequently had trouble sleeping and occassionally experience dissassociative fugues and experienced at least one grand mal seizure. These were probably related to the various drugs she was given. I think she sounded like she has traits of both borderline personality disorder (impulsivity, chronic feelings of emptiness and abandonment, intense bouts of anger, reckless behavior) and histrionic personality disorder (socially inappropriate attention seeking behavior, theatrical expressions, false feelings of intimacy with others); both of these disorders are associated with increased risk of suicidal behavior. That, and there is also the possibility of non-autistic sensory processing disorder (anxiety, trouble engaging in routine activities, difficulty adapting to new situations, over-responsive reactions ranging from mild to debilitating, an intense drive to seek stimulation.) SPD is often associated with birth complications- Nancy was born with her umbilical cord around her neck and her brain was deprived of oxygen for a dangerously long time. As a baby, Nancy couldn't stand to be touch and would stiffen her limbs and scream when adults tried to cradle her; children with SPD may be averse to human contact. If any or all of these were Nancy's issue, antipsychotics would not have helped her.

She took her daughter to doctor after doctor from the time she was a baby and for the longest time she was told nothing was wrong with her, then they said they had no idea what was wrong with her, then they told her it was too late for treatment. She did everything she knew to do and hit a wall. She still supported Nancy financially after she left home, was in the process of helping both her and Sid get into rehab just before she died, then defended her in death when her child was violated and dehumanized by a salacious press that treated her as nothing more than a character/caricature.

Great video Scott! I used to talk to Alan G. Parker (Sid's biographer) on Facebook back in 2010. He's a major dbag and sicko! He used to write me gross messages of "what he would do to me" if I ever came to England! When the feelings weren't reciprocated, he blocked me and I haven't talked to him since! I'm not surprised he lied about Sid's mom giving him the hot shot! He's a clinger-on! It's so crazy how much The Chelsea hotel has changed since the 70's! Thank you for this video!

I was SO obsessed with Sid & Nancy when I was in high school. It would be amazing to see her grave and the inside of Chelsea. I’ve only seen the outside. The video included of the old hotel room gave me chills. Incredible!

I have a hot take and unpopular opinion that Nancy did it to herself in an attempt to get Sids attention but he was so out of it from all the Tunial he took, that he wouldn't wake up. Instead of going to get help when she realized he wasn't waking up (she knew she would be put in a nuthouse if authorities knew she had done it to herself. They'd find out about the drugs, etc) she just kind of sat back in the bathroom, probably not thinking it was as bad as it was because she did miss all major organs. As far as she knew, it was just the skin she got. So she bled out. I know people don't like that theory, but I think this is a likely candidate for what happened. She also probably didn't care what happened to her. She had reached the end of her life as far as she knew. She knew she wouldn't live past 21. She didn't want to. She didn't want to get old. She got what she wanted and knew would happen

There is a documentary called who killed Nancy and they bring up this theory. They interviewed the people who were hanging around Sid and Nacy at the time and they basically said the same thing. One guy even said that one day in London he went over to their apartment and Nacy had cut her wrist bc "Sid didn't love her anymore".

You did the story justice by not casting blame on either one of them. No one will really never no who was to blame. All I know is seems like they truly loved each other.

Beautiful, Scott. Thank you so much. I am a Gen X and was born in June 1966. So, as a kid, I remember all the stories of the Sex Pistols and interviews/news reports of the whole, sad, sorted, Sid and Nancy affair. This tragedy has always resonated with me. Idk why, really, maybe I was a little Punkish back in the day. I have read a lot about The Pistols and research that whole short Punk scene in the U.K. and the U.S.. Just like Sid and Nancy it was crazy hot for a short while then burned itself out. Once again thanks Scott. Love you for bringing us along on another wicked cool jaunt. Dead Kennedys even gg Allen I was punk. Sad and Nancy's story was of tragedy and love. But at least they are together. You finally made me cry but good tears. Thank you my friend stay safe❤❤✌

Very evocative video. I flew from Ireland to New York in February 1994..There was a ferocious blizzard in the city. I decided to make I way to Chelsea Hotel. I sat in the lobby for a while, marvelling at the place and the colourful and bohemian characters who lived in that hotel down through the years. I met the then manager and mentioned about Sid @ Nancy. He got annoyed and said he didn't want the hotel just remembered for that. I will always remember my sojourn in that hotel on a very snowy New York afternoon with the ghosts of Sid @ Nancy, Dylan Thomas and Brendan Behan, etc, the Chelsea will never die 🔔

I also want to add that I was so into the did and Nancy stuff as a teen but as a mother that's 40 now I've read the book Nancy's mother wrote and it was just heartbreaking. There's even an interview on a podcast with her mom about raising her and how she was in and out of facilities. So sad...so thank you so much for filming her resting spot. For those of us that can't travel there especially. Could you do an Edie Sedgwick episode ?!?

Thank you for sharing their story.I remember them in the 70's and I wasn't into the Punk Rock scene, but their story was everywhere. Sid & Nancy were a toxic couple from the beginning, that doesn't mean they didn't truly love each other. RIP Sid and Nancy, I hope they are together.

Personally, I think she did it to get his attention. No major organs were hit. When she didn't get his attention because he was so effed up on all the Tunial he had taken, she just sat back, probably thinking it wasn't that bad of a wound she inflicted but it was and she bled out.

Fantastic job on this one Scott. Appreciate you visiting Nancy's grave, which happens to be near where I grew up & have visited as well. Nancy's mother, Deborah Spungen, wrote a book about her daughter titled, "And I Don't Want to Live This Life: A Mother's Story of Her Daughter's Murder." While I highly recommend it, it's a difficulty book to read. Nancy suffered an injury at birth that had a detrimental effect on her the rest of her short & tragic life. Take care.

Hi Scott thank you for doing this one. I was into the Sex Pistols in 1979 when I was 14 and I had the album ‘Never mind the bollocks’ I had to keep it at my neighbour’s house as my dad refused to let me play it in my house. I was absolutely devastated when he died as I was a rebel and at the time in 1979,we had mirror badges which I wore on my school uniform. One was ‘Sid UK 🇬🇧’ and the other one was ‘Never mind the bollocks’and I was always pulled out of the school assembly for being disrespectful lol…😂

Scott, great video! Nancy attended the same school that I did in PA briefly, before she was hospitalized or placed in residential school. The school is Lower Moreland High School and there is a yearbook photo (I have seen this along with friends) where her back is turned to the camera so you can’t see her face in the yearbook picture. Anyways, her mom lived a block away from my family home for many years. Nancy grew up in my hometown of Huntington Valley, Pa. I am only 40 so, I did not know her but people definitely knew her in the area. ❤

I've read "and I don't want to live this life " countless times, and I've always been struck with the tragedy of both sid and Nancy's life and death. My heart goes out to their families and friends, and it's just so sad what drug addiction can lead to. I know Nancy was so troubled from an early age, and her family went through hell. I wish I knew how to contact Deborah Spungen just to tell her how much her book impacted me.

Funny enough, I was in jail at the time, and a lady was reading that book that her mother wrote, and I was so intrigued, and could relate a little and I’m from New York so I was super interested. I definitely recommend reading the book and watching the documentary on them. Quite sad story.

Great video. I actually am fortunate enough to live here and thru a family member who was in that scene back then, it’s believed that Sid didn’t kill Nancy. Someone else did and this person’s actions afterwards kinda sealed that rumor. The Chelsea is my fav building in manhattan and I’m stoked it’s open again. Love ur channel, long time fan 🤘 Edit: I was lucky enough to grab a piece of their bathroom window molding during the renovation. Friend of mine was part o some of the construction crew and got it for me. It’s pretty rad to have.

Actually, I know someone who was there that Night. I was advised not to tell, so I will leave certain names out. Sid & Nancy had a little get together. Nancy got money from her Mother and as Dealers came in and out of their Room, more gathered. Nancy became obnoxious, insisting a Dealer come back with 'better dope', and waved around the large sum of cash she had. Sid was nodded out, as a few Others. The Ones who were awake and had enough of Nancy showing off the money, and wasn't sharing her 'purchases '. As the Ones who just wanted dope, they tried to distract her. She placed the money on a small table, and they went to grab it, and Nancy got worse. She was pushed away, and the Holder of the knife plunged it in. They fled the Room. Those who didn't even know what they were planning left the Room in horror. The next day they heard she Died, and no one came forward. The Junkie World. Sid really had nothing at all to do with it, but he was a Heavy User, and there was Alcohol, and other drugs as well. No, I fortunately was not there, but all I wil say is a Screenwriter was there and his sequence of events did not ever waiver. Truth.

My friend was just there, he had a drink in the bar and then managed to sneak up to the room door. He was caught and told (nicely) to go back downstairs, but he managed it. Wow the room was really small back then. I read Nancy's Mom's book and she said she thought maybe Nancy had riled Sid up on purpose so he would kill her, because she didn't want to live anymore. Could be. I guess she had problems all her life.

I was in 1F on Halloween night last year (2023) when I went to see The Damned at irving Plaza om their 'Darkadelic' tour .S id -hated- The Damned, and their lead singer, Dave Vanian, btw. According to the video, if I understand... 1F, the room that I stayed in, was -not- part of Room 100. Whew! Cuz some weird shit happened. Took the umbrella out of the room and it broke that day... smashed my finger in the front door.... ijs

As many times as I traveled to NY for work, I never checked out this hotel. What a beautiful place. I was never into punk and never really got into the story of these two. Nancy would have been a little younger than me. It is tragically interesting. You did the storytelling proud.

Saw a documentary on them ( Last 24 hours ) they do really good documentaries. Another one that is an interesting story is Gia Carangi first supermodel from PA from humble beginning to straight to the top to only come crashing down ( drugs) . Cindy Crawford was called Baby Gia because she became famous after she died ( Gia) .Same look etc. Angela Jolie played her in a movie too. One of the first celebrities to die from Aides. Interesting story if your ever interested. Great job on this too Scott you always do a great job. Something so interesting from these stories back then

I think he did kill her, but I dont think he knew what he was doing. She was extremely contentious herself and was not liked by anyone because she was just so rude and obnoxious. She didn't deserve to die, but I can see them both being high or coming down and her just being on him for something and him snapping. As sick as they both were, I do think he loved her and wouldn't have killed her intentionally. He seemed devastated about what happened and had been suicidal for years and this was just the tipping point.

Our across-the-hall neighbor for many years was the late, great Arthur Weinstein who owned Hurrah!, the club where Sid assaulted Patti's brother. Patti is of course another noted tenant. All roads lead to The Chelsea. Well Done, Scott! 🎥

Didnt Arthur also own The World club later? I remember he owned a gaggle of Saluki dogs at that time. I worked for a tenant at the Chelsea and his apartment was a recording studio so spent time there doing that and also ended up having friends who lived there...late 80's early 90's. Stanley Bard's office directly to the right of the front door and always open to everyone. Viva, her daughter Gabby Hoffman, Susanne Bartsch , Richard Bernstein (artist who did all of the covers for Interview Magazine) lived there at the time.

When we first met him, he was the chief lighting designer for Peter Gatien's spots i.e. Limelight, Club USA, Tunnel, etc. Richard Bernstein who was gay used to pass supermodels off to Arthur in the day, when he lived on the 6th floor, and Arthur was with Jessica Lange for years. Helluva guy. Lived at the Chelsea until he passed of cancer in 2008.

Love this video of Sid and Nancy you done!! Great job to btw!! I read the book Nancy’s mom wrote about her. Nancy was troubled mentally pretty much from the very beginning of her life. She never stopped crying when she was born. Woukd hold her breath till she almost pass out. Had fits all the time. Harassed her other siblings. She had a sister and a brother they were nothing like her. Mom had to send her off to a school that dealt with kids like Nancy. She would do good for awhile then ness up. She said when Nancy would date a guy her whole personality would change even if his accent was different she would change hers to way he sounded. Very man crazy from early age too. So I see why she sounded and looked alit like Sid… She was a difficult person to be around or be friends even with why she didn’t have many. She told her mom she wouldn’t live to be old. I think she even tried killings herself once .. Nancy could push your buttons and she loved to argue. I say she pushed sid to the point probably even taunting him to do it. She was like thst. She hated being the way she was she told her mom. She knew she was different and had problems and she wanted to just be normal.. Reading the book changed how I looked at Nancy. Everyone blames her for Sid’s drug use and death alot of people hated her but I didn’t. She was a tortured soul . She just wanted love ..Her mom loved her very much even though she put them through a lot. They have been dead for a long time. May they be together and have the peace they never had on earth. R.I.P. Sid and Nancy!!

I went to an after hours party in room 100 of the Chelsea a month before Syd killed Nancy. Local black punk rocker Neon Leon invited a bunch of us to a jam session at the hotel after closing Max's Kansas City and it was in that room.

I never believed Sid did this. I've always had an affinity for her (My given name is Laura) we creeper around the Chelsea a lot in the late 80's. We tried peeping INTO the door peep hole which yes I think was renamed to 101 or 103 at the time. Wierd, sad vibes there....😔. R.I.P Sid and Nancy.

I read Nancy’s mothers book and it was so sad and showed what some mental illness can do to people. The saddest part was when she went to the NY morgue to claim Nancy’s body she overheard several attendants laughing about what a piece of garbage Nancy was and how she probably wouldn’t have any family claim her. To overhear that just tore her heart apart!
