It totally does! That's one of the things I love about them - style over substance isn't usually a great way to go about it but it makes people soooo excited about technology like this (plus it's highly functional anyway) so it is a win win!

Yes you are right. I never thought that space could be fake because I have been to a rocket launch but you have managed to persuade me that there is no such thing as space and that the earth is not round but is indeed a flat disk! Thanks for awakening me to the truth! And we have never been to the moon and we can't. IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE!

@@Soloohara The term "ditto" is a word whose etymology predates the Stone Age, used by the Boomer People to express concurrent or agreement with the aforesaid. Just for clarification, at 2:55 or so, Tim mentions "jettison the nose cone here in a second". I thought crew dragon won't jettison the nose cone. I thought it was on a hinge and will fold backward for docking. Am I mistaken?
@areddy1994
@areddy1994 5 лет назад
I believe in a nominal scenario,it will hinge and fold backward for docking. If an off nominal situation where the hooks and backup hooks fail to unfold the nosecone, it will be jettisoned. It's basically a backup to the backup scenario for crew dragon.

There are 5K and even 8K videos on RU-vid. I even found a 16K video, although I don't know how useful that is, since there are no 16K monitors; and it would take four 8K monitors in a grid to display it. (Although Linus Tech Tips did do a "16K gaming rig" by using *sixteen* 4K monitors in a 4x4 grid...)

At a point, and I think we are very close with a 4K computer monitor, individual pixels will be indistinguishable. Add more distance, like when viewed as a TV and the current FULL HD is more then enough. Movie theaters with their huge screens use 4K resolution. 8K and higher is not needed but are sales drivers. Cameras having higher resolutions is great because when it gets edited you will be able to crop without using output resolution.
@andrasbiro3007
@andrasbiro3007 5 лет назад
Tzadvantage Bkk I use a 49'' 4K TV as a monitor on my desk. It's awesome. Actually I can imagine having an even bigger one, up to 80''. At 49'' the 4K resolution is just enough, I can almost see the individual pixels. When we have the horsepower to render games at 8K and above, those resolutions will make sense on a desktop monitor, even 16K. 6'' smartphones have 1080p or even higher resolutions, and it makes curved lines so beautifully smooth. 7'' e-book readers have high resolution for the same reason. 300dpi seems to be the optimum. For a 80'' monitor that's around 21000x12000 pixels. For a standard 24'' monitor that's 6K.

First of all, extreme awesome insights! But on two points I want to calm your excitement with a bit of context ... 1. Autonomy isn't really new 21st century tech: every Russian-human-space-flight-vehicle (Vostok, Soyuz, Buran, TKS, Salyut) is/was capable of fully autonomous flight, starting with Jury Gagarin. But true, for American crafts this is kind of new... *trolling* 2. The seats going up to the controls is also an commonly used technique (Shenzhou, Soyuz, ...) to dampening the shock of landing or firing launch-abort-motors.
@spamregal

Oh, in English the correct transliteration reads: Yuri Gagarin. But hey you probably understood to whom I tried to refer here ;-)
@vickas54
@vickas54 5 лет назад
The Space Shuttle was also autonomous, though early flights required crew to take over final approach and landing. Also all cargo spacecraft by definition are autonomous (perhaps except docking??). Hell, the american capsules were autonomous from Gemini on, and Mercury was remote controlled from ground computers.

The touchscreen and "capacitive buttons" worry me. A spacecraft during liftoff and reentry will be vibrating and have high G loads. I'd want a physical button I can touch without triggering, then just apply more pressure to trigger. No uncertainty. No "well, I *THOUGHT* my finger was on 'deorbit now', but it actually activated 'cabin depress' - oops." (1:34 - they're right next to each other!) It doesn't need hundreds/thousands of physical buttons - just replace the capacitive buttons with physical ones. They can even change what they do, with a label on the screen right above. Sort of how airliners don't use touchscreens, they use plain screens with buttons surrounding them that change in software what they do. You should be able to push buttons by *feel*, not needing to look directly at them.

I think SpaceX will revisit landing Crew Dragons on land using the Super Dracos. I know Elon said their future for landing spacecraft on land will be the BFR. I think for some situations the BFR will be overkill. I think they'll find that even with the BFR, there is a place for Crew Dragon. Sometimes you want to transport a few people to and from space. Like maybe for emergencys.
@alann8117
@alann8117 5 лет назад
I think Nasa said they don't want landing legs incorporated into the heat shielding as that was a point of failure for shuttle.
@3gunslingers
@3gunslingers 5 лет назад
Sarah Unlike CrewDragon the BFR will be fully and rapidly reusable. There is no point in using the CrewDragon instead of the BFR even if the costs for the rockets are equal. Think about all the additional ground hardware required if you are producing and flying TWO rockets (and one of them is only partially reusable.) One system to rule them all!
@SarahLJP
@SarahLJP 5 лет назад
Well, even if they don't reconfigure the Crew dragon to land on land. I still think the BFR will be overkill for certain situations. Maybe they'll develop a tiny (compared to the BFR) version of the BFR at some point. For emergency situations or something. Were they only need to bring a few people up or down from orbit.
@3gunslingers
@3gunslingers 5 лет назад
And who will pay for a SECOND development of a fully reusable rocket system? Certainly not SpaceX. The BFR is not overkill, if it is cheaper because of rapid reuse. Size plays no role in this respect.
@SarahLJP
@SarahLJP 5 лет назад
You're misunderstanding the timeframe I'm thinking in. I'm thinking long term. Obviously, the BFR needs to start flying first. I'm thinking about in about a decade from or more from now. Once the BFR has established itself a bit. I like to think about things long term.
@SteveWindsurf
@SteveWindsurf 5 лет назад
Pretty sure SpaceX does not have the reusable star liner capability because it’s doing the minimum so as to focus on BFS. Perhaps a D2 will have to be done & be everything Elon wanted (cargo first to prove concept).

I think if Crew Dragon had been allowed to do propulsive landings, it would've been reused for crews. When NASA nixed this, I think the quickest way to design and build alternative was water landing (already done for Cargo D) - the salt-water immersion of course makes refurbishment to the man-rated standard more involved and expensive. These are all deductions from various stuff I've read. So yes, "the minimums"!

I speculate that since there are more cargo missions than crew missions that they recoup by flying it crewed once, then 1 or more times again as cargo before scrapping rather than having standing fleets of crew and cargo ships sitting around. I guess going for multi-role vs multi-use. :)
