Shaun Greenhalgh was once a prolific forger. Based in a garden shed in his parents' house in Bolton, he fooled the experts for three decades with an impressive array of fakes. Obsessed with the techniques of the past, Shaun could make anything - from medieval church carvings to Islamic drinking vessels. But a spell in prison convinced him to cross back over to the right side of the law and he has now teamed up with Oxford historian Dr Janina Ramirez. Together, they are trying to keep alive the secrets of the ancients.
In the first episode, Janina sets Shaun the challenge of making a jewelled eagle brooch of the kind worn by Visigoth chieftains in the Dark Ages. Inspired by a live eagle he befriends in an animal sanctuary in Lancashire, Shaun is confident he can do it. But sourcing the materials proves tricky, and making the brooch is more difficult than he expected. Can he finish in time?

Shaun is one of the most talented artist/craftsman in the world. The way he chooses to impart so much technique of the original crafting of the pieces when there are SO many more technological shortcuts he could easily take and manages such a beautiful result in such a time constraint, is a tribute to the artists of the past and an honor as a viewer to watch.

With his precision work he reminds me of the guy with his micro art that you made an episode of. Very interesting, indeed. Yes, and according to Waldemar, and I concur, there were no 'dark ages' at all.

i have a rather smaller reproduction of a similar eagle brooch from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, so I can really appreciate what Shaun has accomplished. I seem to remember him doing a version of the Alfred Jewel, which also turned out to be a stunning piece. He is a magnificent craftsman.

Classic art documentary. The forger needs to go hold an eagle to make a broach. Yup...definitely was his idea to go hold an eagle... :/

Yeah, the head looks very unlike the one in the original brooch, and certainly doesn't look like an eagle. Also, please put spaces after comas, it's literally painful to see how wrong you do it.

When you forge for the public is a crime. When you forge for a museum so they can charge you money to look at forgeries, you're the man. LoL Funny how no one seems to have a problem with this.

He is a highly skilled artist and craftsman who no longer purveys his work as original to the time period he replicates. That would be a triumph of rehabilitation for a criminal. He served his time and now uses his skills in an interesting and inventive way, and also pursues his skill at art. What did you do last week that was a true test of your skill at your vocation?

When an artist makes a piece that looks like it was done by a specific artist or in a specific age, but everyone knows that it wasn't made in that time or by that person, it's a Reproduction. Everything is on the up and up, no one's being cheated. Lots of artists make reproductions, and as long as they don't try to pass the work off as belonging to someone else, or to "some when" else, there isn't a problem. I think he did a magnificent job, and it's something I wish I could do. I love making jewelry, but my skills are nowhere close to his. He also has the experience to know how to go about getting the supplies that are most like what the Visigoths would have used. That's tremendous, along with, of course, his artistic skills.

It’s good but Janina (?) is silly & superficial
@OstblockLatina
@OstblockLatina 3 года назад
It's funny how Januszczak is being inconsequential with the pronunciation of J in Janina's name. Especially considering both her first name and his last name are Polish and he doesn't mispronounce his own surname. Also, I get an impression the less similar the manufactured copies are to the original, the more enthusiastic Janina tries to appear about them and it comes off as really fake. I'm sorry but the copied brooch's head looks nothing like the one in the original. The new brooch looks more like a sparrow than an eagle.
