Rio Ferdinand is joined by Portugal legend Luís Figo to look back on his EURO experiences, including a couple of memorable matches against England. #eurolegends @bookingcom -- Watch More: www.uefa.tv Learn More: www.uefa.com
As a portuguese, I don't think I will ever forget Figo's leadership, I don't remember many moments where he would be angry at teammates whenever we were losing, he would just be quiet, pick up the ball and do something himself for the comeback. I know this is about the Euros but man, I will never forget how we lost in the 2006 WC, I think we played well in the semis but that Henry penalty (dive) still haunts me. I honestly believe we could have beaten Italy in the end, oh well...
me too buddy. Ricardo Carvalho's heel was planted on grass and his toes poking up, and henry leaned his leg on his toes and fell down. horrible. I still think about the pain from euro 2004. it still looks like the greek player blocked and held on to ricardo from stopping that goal. Portugal should have won 2004, most def had the chance to win 2006, should have won 2008 and again same story for 2020 euro and even 2022 world cup but we had such an incompetent manager in fernando santos. Now we must win 2024. just my imo
Yes and a pure playmaker would make so many chances without actually needing to cross the ball. Through balls, stepover trickery... He had it all.... Could play on any wing too and even I think could do No10 if you asked (and if Portugal didn't have Rui Costa)
The best winger ever, in my opinion. Highly efficient, a leader on the pitch, great dribbler, a great crosser, explosiveness, fabulous vision and awareness.
To be fair Euros had less then l think 12 or 8 teams before... WC had way less too, soon they'll be 50+ willbe wasy to qualify, let's of good Euro teams, top 2's in all groups should make it through automatically.
An era when footballers were actually proper technical footballers…characters and personalities…today all you have are athletic specimens and social media ‘stars’
@@feliped2443no he’s not. Footballers back then just hoofed the ball forward. Go back and actually watch games from back then and you’ll see they have the same technicality as league 2 today.
^^ you've never watched prime 2000s football or you would not be saying this. go watch Holland vs France Euro 2000 group stage and realize it takes a month of games in the modern era to be able to see as much action, flair, and outrageous one touch play as we used to see in 90 mins.
What an idol and role model for our younger generations then.. A general on the pitch, who could do everything, he was efficient, silent, composed, slick, tough and like a father or big brother figure for his teammates and he helped take the Portuguese team to great accomplishments. Portugal really looked like the Brazil of Europe at that time, "exotic", oozing with talent, flair, attractive style of play and Luis I believe held that all in balance. Great work on taking us back to those beautiful carefree afternoons of those summers. Well done on having an iconic career, Luis.. Greetings from Greece.. ; )
Eusébio and Ronaldo are better players, but Figo has been my favourite Portuguese player ever. His dribbles were astonishing and he is probably the best playmaking winger ever. He was as creative in the wings as any number 10 playing in the center.
figo will always be a much better player than cristiano (there is only one ronaldo). better players?! ridiculous. figo by far the more talented and real leader. cristiano was a better athlete maybe but no way better player. cristiano was never leading the teams, never really stepped up in the big moments.
@@miguelrosado6348 you have absolutely no clue what youre talking about. cristiano was never a superb player. figo had everything, a remarkable player. youre maybe too young to understand. hands down figo the much better player and to be honest, its not even close. shouldnt be a discussion at all. boy, even rui costa was a better player than cristiano...
I like Luis Figo so much. I remember I bought his jersey on holidays in Spain as a child. What is amazingly ironic is that it was Real Madrid jersey and I bought it few kilometres from Barcelona and proudly displaying it there not even knowing what the rivalry really meant :D thank god I was a kid that probably saved my ass :D
These barTHElona fans are insane, they take football rivalry to a stupid level. It's just a friggin game and Figo was absolutely mistreated by the barcelona president and executives. So he went where he was praised and appreciated.
@@Iesous27 You do know that Barcelona vs Real is not just a football rivalry it's waaay deeper than that. I don't mind Figo going to Real at all but I understand the feelings about it.
@@Iesous27 If you know the history you don't said it, Barcelona vs Real Madrid is not just a Football Rivalry but it was a Rivalry between two Beliefs who shows "Catalan Nationalism vs Spanish Nationalism"
Luis Figo is pragmatic person, he is defiantly a legend, no dough's about that, Rui Costa was the maestro, an huge agglomeration of talent and creativity, love for the gentleman from Portugal, Rio Ferdinand.🤗🤗
To me , Luis is a better leader than Christiano even in the club and national team. He didn't always complian in the game , angered at his teammates who performed not well.
But figo being my favourite doesn't mean I don't recognise ronaldo as being the best player that's ever lived but personally I think figo captained his country better
@@doloreslaflipoflopo2746 He said "he's my favourite player", not the best player. Anyone can be someone's favourite, which is why he specified that. Best is a different story, and it's cr7
i was 16 in 2004, i am greek. most people used to shout a chant about figo that was very disrespectful and at that time as a kid i thought it was funny, now being 36 it makes me sad on how disrespectful it was, figo deserved more respect, especially from us.
This man Figo is so underrated, especially when talking about best players in the world... when he joined Barcelona, noone remembers what he done.. even with R9 and Guaridola.. Figo helped them win the la liga.. This guy use to be roommates with Pep.. i use to see him many times at Sporting.. my dad use to take me and my sibilings to watch them train every morning and afternoon... hate when they speak of Zidane and not Figo... for me they are both the same in terms of greatness... the only difference Zidane was better than figo was his first touch control.. other than that, i reckon Figo had better dribbling than Zidane.... the fact barca fkd Figo over and sold him to Madrid. Then you have idiot barca fans turn their back on him.. the emotional damage that must of been for him.. wish figo played in the premier league, 110% he would of been best non english player of all time in the prem above Henry
Thank you Figo! You taught me how to play football along with Zidane and Ronaldo. When the three of you retired, I lost my interest to watching and playing football. As a Greek, I had mixed feelings when we won, one of my three favourite players wouldn't win a Euro at the same time we were winning it.
I am watching the euro, it is amazing to see drop in quality for many of the team Spain went from xavi ineasta fabregas villa torres pique puyol Mata ramos casillas silva etc, to I don't even no the name of these players Italy Totti Delpierro Pirlo De rossi Cannavaro Buffon Cheillini .....to embarressment at hand of team a Swiss team. Holland Van persie, Robben and Snieder upfront to ......VVD VVD VVD VVD
People don’t give enough credit to Joao pinto which only left once to play in Spain I think not for long but he was on the level of figo and Rui Costa he was the best player for years in the Portuguese league absolutely class scored goals in any kind of way and assisted like crazy
Portuguese players are popular these days.......but back then.....quality was already very present, even beyond Figo and Costa.....they just didn't have good marketing. João Pinto today would leave Portugal straight to one of the top Premier/La Liga clubs and he would tear it up.
Pro Evo legend. One of the few players who was so good in every PES from the PS2 era that you would get him as a 16-yr-old Regen and actually use him immediately. He wasn't too bad in real life either.
I love the portuguese people and their team. What a truely great superstar Figo was. My favourite mainland Europe team. I love Romania too but im a wales fan but come kon England because many hate England. 🎉❤😅
My favourite player of all time. I still remember that England game... he single handedly turned the screws... his goal was stunning. Even Seaman was stunned beyond belief. His move from Barca to Madrid also demonstrated iron balls.
João Felix doesn't belong in that group. Just having technical ability doesn't make you a great player. He lacks the mentality. That's why he hasn't imposed himself in any team bar Benfica.
@@Legenda20SLOhe was a really good player who often got criticized when the team struggled to score. Very underrated but Ronaldo beats him as top striker.
Luis Figo...
Tyan Booth would be great on TV or radio. He is so funny, an ex boxer and jermaine Pennants cousin. He would be great on talksport, far better than Simon Jordan especially on boxing programme.
I never thought Rio himself would try it in reports or media ..When he himself is one of the best defender ever and such a star of football. Bu he is doing excellent job better than most interviewers
The Best Characters and Players on the Pitch...with them leave activity one after the other...my kind of football understanding and love dies too....To me the last one was now Ibrahimovic...take care all
What a legend. I support AC Milan, but I remember that I flew back to Milan just to go to the stadium to watch the last match of his career in Inter Milan. What a player.
L. Figo is the best # 7 of all time, he didnt get the credit and media hype unfortunately . Its really funny back then when peeps even equate D. Becham with him
I hope theres a longer interview that you do with him when you ask him about the transfer from Barca to Madrid and everything behind it. Also being the 1st Galactico n what he thought being on that legendary team
There is a documentary on Netflix where he talked about it in detail plus his agent, Barca president and Madrid President gave their side of the story.
