Episode 3. M103 is a big tank, so this one is a three-parter. We have brought in Marine Tanker Ken Estes to help show us around and teach us more about the vehicle.

Then, the grunt would leave the phone off the hook and the phone would get ripped off so tankers wouldn't have to deal with it after that.... Till PMCS, then the TC would get yelled at.

look back to the m4 sherman, the m6 prototype, the t29/30/34 prototypes, now at the m103, the m60, and to a lesser extent the m1 and you'll see americas definition of low profile contrasts greatly to everyone elses, but heavy it is, what a cool machine!

80 mile range to 300 mile range is such a huge improvement.
@daffyduck7336
@daffyduck7336 4 месяца назад
The reason for the range improvement is 1. The 1790 diesel engine, this engine The coolers (both engine and transmission in stall on upper engine housing) the original 1790 engine (gasoline fueled with carbators) had the oil coolers mounted one on each the side of the engine assembly , each cooler were over 3 feet high and projected over 2 feet into the engine compartment, 2. The auxiliary generator was eliminated, this allowed the redesigning of fuel tanks (two per engine compartment , lift and right sides) to more than double the fuel capacity..or go from 90 miles to 300 miles..of course on an improved road! Across county your mileage goes to he'll and fuel consumption out of sight!..do-da-day!

When I came in the Corps we had the M60. Later we got the M1 Abrams. I remember asking a MSgt which he preferred and he stated the M60 simply due to maintainability. Also, as a Grunt and training in the Palms thats 29 Palms for you civies he asked our CO if he could shut down if we were going to be at our pause for a while. He said it takes 5 min for the M1 to spool up and be ready to go so he would need time if we were going to move out. Just a little bit of info for ya.

Yes. The first few vehicles were American because it was easy to find manuals for them around here. Before spending much effort, we wanted to see how popular the videos were. With under 25,000 hits on the oldest video so far (M26), I'm not sure how long the project will run or how much effort we'll be spending to translate manuals from, say, Russian.

Much better than your previous "Inside the Chieftain's Hatch" videos. You seem much more relaxed and not as stiff. This is the Chieftain that I know from the other videos (player gatherings, talking about German tanks with the young lady using the in-game garage, etc). You knowledge of these tanks and arty seems quite extensive and I am glad that you are doing this series of videos. Especially since I am a bit of a "Tank Nerd" and cannot get enough information about them. Thanks.

This series is great, really educational and engrossing from an engineering point of view. I do not think that the vids are too long, any shorter would be a disservice. That being said there may be room for a much shorter, teaser, video hitting the big points of the tanks, interspersed with some historical action footage to keep the younger ADD crowd entertained. Great work Chieftain, please keep em comin!

After reading about the procurement history of the M103, I hypothesis that it was brought into production as a show piece in response to the Soviet IS heavy tanks (also largely show pieces). Despite underwhelming performance in testing, 300 were built and sent to Europe to be observed by the Soviets. Despite US tanks being deployed to the Dominican Republic and Vietnam during the M103 service life, it was never sent to combat.

I do hope you go 'all the way' (i.e., with as many tanks as possible, and not just with those tanks in-game) with this series as it is quite enjoyable (and educational) to watch. Maybe you could also do short features on tank doctrine, from the platoon all the way up to operational level, including doctrine development by various countries and the whole combined arms thing.

Damn... so much configuration on the M103. But yet is a sweet tier 9 heavy. Can't wait to get it on the game. The audio was a bit slurred due to the hangar that house the tanks. That my theory though.
@nightmare0721
@nightmare0721 8 лет назад
+Leonard White it's pretty good. the armor is decent and heavily protected. but the gun elevation is not that great. once you get the top tier gun, then you'll dish out the damage that you want every 11 to 8 seconds (depending on how well your crew is trained).

This project is awesome. Alot of people will be interested in it. The problem is that not alot of people know about it. What you need to do is promote it more (via the World of Tanks website, the game patcher/login screen and also via Facebook). Simple and cheap ways to promote it. Personally I had no idea about these videos until I saw someone I am subscribed to who 'Liked' this video. Promo is key!

i also heard that it has no armor on its belly so every time one drives over an ied it gets totaly fucked.... i also heard that after it drives over an ied and gets fucked that its rather hard for the crew to get out..... apart from that i havnt heard anything important regarding the abrams.

jwenting Gun has to be traversed for the driver to get out....Theyre not mine proof at all, not a lot of crew injuries but they get knocked out...Thing is, every damaged abrams hull is rehashed into a new tonk so very few (exactly 1 purchased from the egyptians) have made it into private hands....Just what I read dont know if its 100% fact.
@jwenting
@jwenting 9 лет назад
locknloadvideo "not mine proof" isn't the same as "having no armour at the bottom"... Nothing is mine proof, depending on the size of the blast. And no amount of armour plating will prevent a track being blown off.
@locknloadvideo
@locknloadvideo 9 лет назад
jwenting I think it has more to do with the low ground clearance and squareness off the belly armor...More than just tracks lots of cracked hulls and split joints ect I think...I agree not trying to get into an arguement just trying to learn more about the abrams. It is poorly designed for groundborne threats.

In this video Ken Estes says that all of the M103s were being produced during 1952-53, but online through many museums as well as wikipedia (I don't put full stock in wikipedia) say that the M103 was Introduced in 1957. So I'm just trying to find out more reliable information about the M103's history. Thanks.
@olesleepy6633
@olesleepy6633 9 лет назад
When the M103 went to field tests with the U.S. Army (1954) they came back with list of 180 defects they were not happy about, one of which was there was no turret basket and the loaders had to fallow the gun around. The Army wanted to dump this project very badly . However the congressional over-sight committee said no way are you going to dump over 200 of these vehicles and the orders to make this vehicle operation was handed to the USMC. By 1957 the Marines had produced a workable heavy tank (M103 A1), it worked so well the Army took 80 some of them and shipped them to Europe and formed a Heavy tank unit, by 1963 the upgraded rebuild (diesel powered refitted rangefinder) M103 A2s were coming off the rebuild lines . As a footnote Ken Estes retired as a LtCol, and I know him very well, I should I built engines and trans for his tanks.
