what a well taken care of tank. it appears it could be driven right out of the building no problem at all. i wish all tanks were restored and taken care of as much as this magnificent tank.
I thought so too, it looks brand new. I do think that a lot of the time the condition of various tanks in collections (esp. the latter post WW2 stuff) has a lot to do with the condition they were in at the time of disposal. This machine could have been rebuilt close to its retirement, I have bought a lot of Military equipment like this where tens of 1000s and often 100s of thousands of dollars are put into retrofit or rebuilding and then the units are not long after disposed of for one reason or another. I used to think of all the money wasted but the Military has to have everything ready at a moments notice wasted money be damned, And in the end, I guess the fact that it wasn't used was a good thing.
Well looks are not everything, while everything is bright and shiny this turret is not operational, if look to left of the equabrator gage you will a block of wood, that what is holding the gun assembly level so that it (gun and breach) can be traversed, you see the elevation/ equivation cylinder seals are blown! This was one the major problems that plagued the M103. Oh and how would I know this, in 2004 I was in this vehicle. I guess I had better clarify this, I am retired Marine Msgt my MOS was 2149 which is a "tracked vehicle maintenance chief " for tanks , self-propelled arty, amtracks and anti-tank vehicles ( in the marines that means "Ontos",) and I spent a lot time in the vehicles in this collection with Ken as a guest of Mr. Littlefield.
This tank is really in nice shape. It looks fully operational. There's an M103 tank located at Credit Island Park in Davenport IA. One of few remaining 103s.
There is an M103 in the city of Radcliffe, KY, by their visitors bureau. Also used to be one on Fort Knox, KY, but think that was moved to Fort Benning, GA, since just about the entire armored vehicle collection was moved there a few years ago.
I watch this over and over. Even falling asleep to it after a long day. The steady cadence of Ken and Nick, the businesslike presentation is very relaxing and easy to understand.
Stereoscopic requires the brain superimposing the two images from the two eyes on top of each other to make one picture. Coincidence requires two different pictures in one eyepiece which are aligned to make one image.
+mirrorsedgy The sound guy/lady was not watching the meters. If I had done this on a wedding video, I would have had to have given the finished DVD to the bride for free.
This air pocket problem was probably made even worse due to fact that the diameter of the propellant charge is bigger than the projectile caliber, so I imagine the charge has to not only move projectile forwards, but also center it with the barrel (effectively move it up a little). So you have to apply enough force to make a move prependicular to the direction of the force applied and at the same time not too much for, to not separate charge and projectile.

Getting the impression that in their intended roles in Europe, M103 and Conqueror would have been incredibly effective at destroying IS3, T10 and T55 swarms. Gunnery computers, good rangefinders, Conqueror having a hunter killer system, those monstrous 120mm guns, I wouldn't want to be a Soviet tanker until T64 came along. Actually being 6 foot with disproportionately long legs I wouldn't want to be a Soviet tanker full stop.
Even in cannons; Conqueror and M103 had dedicated AT guns (or modified AA guns at least) whereas the IS-2,3,4, and early versions of T-10 had just an artillery piece dating from the 20s (T-10M had a far better 122mm that earlier tanks)
Very interesting.I am surprised there wasn't a recoil guard. That breech coming back 13-15 inches would damage the hips of either loader. if they were too close. I hope you cover the M60A2, I crewed one of those (gunner) when they were first deloyed in Germany,in the mid 70's.
At Ft Knox, I saw a soldier with a fractured nose / face, from getting behind a 105mm gun breech to see if the firing probe was properly in place,during a hang fire.He must have 113/4 inches away, when the gun cooked off, and recoiled 12 inches.
TheChieftainWoT Oh, so the seal between the projectile/propellant and the barrel is just so good that there is no way for the air pocket to empty? And that seal also prevents the removal of the propellant, which would have been halfway in there? I always thought the seals were not that good and there would still be a small gap somewhere. Thank you very much, I only knew that on the Leopard 1, the rangefinder works with both coïncidence or stereoscopic, the first could get the distance rapidly and the other was more precise. But I at that time I did not know how they worked.
You use stereoscopic sight every day haha. Close one of your eyes, and then switch, and close the other. You can see two different images, but when you keep both eyes open, it's like one complete image.
So you loaded a dummy round and a propellant charge and got the breech closed as you demonstrated the loading procedure, does that mean that the round got stuck in the rifling and you had to get the cleaning rod and ram it out from the front? Whenever we practiced loading with our D-30 howizers we only used an empty propellant casing to practice the motion of shoving it into the breech, we never rammed a shell into the breech because it would get stuck there and it would be a bitch to get it out.
He was a damn lucky fellow if that is all that he got out of that...They showed us at knox what was left of a guy's arm when he got in behind a 120mm...wasn't pretty.

I would think that 'damage' isn't really the word to use if they were too close...I would bet that it would at a minimum break bones if they were struck by the breechblock of the gun.
