In the second part of the legendary German Panther tour, Nicholas Moran talks about the features of the commander's cupola and gunner's position. He will also do the "Oh, bugger, the tank is on fire” test. Happy viewing!

Excellent review! A couple comments though. Like modern day crews, German WWII tank crews were already very much advocating working as a team unit. Compared to other nations where a single person was expected to do multiple roles, and or had limited communication with other elements of his command. The commander and gunner for example worked closely together, and the azimuth ring in the cupola was situated at eye level so the commander could maintain focus on the task at hand. He could certainly do the other things you mentioned to orientate himself, but the point was to be able to relay accurate information to the gunner. The Azimuth indicator in both positions connects the commander and gunner, and a well trained crew could use these tools to their advantage in a fire fight. The gunner would normally use low mag along with help from the commander to spot targets before switching to high mag to service the target. The FOV at low mag was acceptable especially when considering the strong link that existed between the commander and gunner. It took you about 12 seconds to open the commander's hatch from its closed position, and combined with the loaders hatch, the 3 man turret crew were given at least a chance to evacuate in reasonable time given an emergent situation. There were many other designs that were much less forgiving. A well known situation on the Eastern front was to have enemy infantry climb onto the tank with various hand held explosives/fire hazards. The closed position of the commander's hatch was meant to protect the crew when operating in high risk areas. The open protected position was a unique feature of the Panther.

我感觉这个讲的还是很对的,关于舱盖 黑豹的抽气机也不能应付频繁的射击带来的废气,开了舱盖也好散掉有毒气体
