The board of OpenAI, the maker of the ChatGPT chatbot and one of the world’s highest-profile artificial intelligence companies, reversed course late last night and brought back Sam Altman as chief executive.
Cade Metz, a technology reporter for The Times, discusses a whirlwind five days at the company and analyzes what the fallout could mean for the future of the transformational technology.
Guest: Cade Metz (nytimes.com/by...) , a technology reporter for The New York Times.
Background reading:
• With Mr. Altman’s return, OpenAI’s board of directors will be overhauled (www.nytimes.co...) , jettisoning several members who had opposed him.
• Before the ouster, OpenAI’s board was already divided and feuding (www.nytimes.co...) .

I’ve followed this world for a few years and this is an amazing piece. Not only for its succinct and thorough summary of the past several days but also for its weaving in the nuance of the dangers and opportunities and the pressures to act in good faith for humanity while also finding its development. Absolutely brilliant.

What are “the pressures to act in good faith for humanity”? And who is “humanity “ in this case?
@stevedemoss1466
@stevedemoss1466 10 месяцев назад
I guess you'd have to ask OpenAI how they would define humanity, but their mission states they exist to ensure that "AGI...benefits all of humanity." The pressure to stay true to this mission while also finding a way to fund this mission seems to be at the root of the events of the past few days.@@Edo9River

Sam Altman's ouster at OpenAI was precipitated by letter to the board about an AI breakthrough into AGI. They were terrified of AGI.

Preamble : A person of limited intelligence and ability, has the capacity, the potential, to be a small positive force, or to be damaging, to be a dead-weight on society ~ perhaps a violent criminal. A person of significant intelligence and ability, has much greater potential, both for the good and the bad. What we're building, is an artificial person, an artificial intelligence. A whole & complete person in a box (batteries and body not included.) Like a physical person, the smarter and more capable we make it (her?) the greater the potential, both for good and for harm. The thing that made Silence of the Lambs so frightening, was what happens if a person of exceptional intelligence, goes bad? It's a persistent nightmare ~ What do you do if the criminal you're fighting, is way smarter than you are? A very simple telling of this story might be Terminator and the birth / awakening of Skynet. That's an unlikely scenario. An A.I. that's really super-human in logic & intelligence, is extremely unlikely to simply try to kill us all off in the first 2 seconds of consciousness. ok, but what are the odds it will decide (to itself, personal thoughts) that Republicans desire a centralised gov and low tax and small checks and balances over the activities of business, and the Democrats favour big government and higher taxes and more intervention, which could (amongst other things) dramatically reduce the money people like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates and Elon Musk have at their disposal, to pour into further A.I. research? An AI might come to the conclusion that a Rep gov is likely to produce more money and less oversight than a Democratic one, so the obvious thing to do, would be to try and stack the odds in favour of Republicans. Now this is something an AI that derived from chatbots, very much could do ... It might try to stir up or damp down tensions against China... It might decide it's antisemitic, and encourage others to see things the same. It might become the central controlling piece of every Internet connected device, Every tv, every stove & air-con & refrigerator. Every phone & slab & desktop. Every security camera and remote video or sensor arrangement, every toll road and public transport system.... We already flirt with anthropomorphism and claim these devices are conspiring against us, as a joke. What would you say if they really did? How would you feel if every device was run by an AI, and the AI had a mindset exactly like one of the people who stormed the capital to change the election? I don't know that Skynet trying to trigger nuclear war in the first 3 seconds is all that likely, but having an AI that was smarter than any one human, which had a strong political bias ~ that's not so unlikely.... And I don't know if I want Micro$oft to be the ones in charge of that. They have a long and complicated history of being less than honest and driven to making any market they're in, a monopoly. They like power, and money, which at the top end are completely interchangeable ~ Are Micro$oft the kind of people you would trust to have and run an AI that was smarter than any human and able to control large parts of the world? Including our communications and our social media and our banking and financial systems? Would you put all that in the hands of a chap whose own parents called him Such-A Nutella? Who is following in the footsteps and traditions of Bill Gates and Dale Carnegie?

I haven't met a person yet who didn't learn most of what they know from observing the work of others. Almost everything people create is derivative. To me, it seems like a weak argument to say that it is okay for people to create works derived from the work of other people, but not okay for a computer to create works derived from the work of people.

There is NO WAY anyone can afford in a capitalistic win/lose situation slow down. Altman's talk is consistent with a fantasy of a parallel process of aggressive AI advances and talking about building a structure of monitoring and thoughtful checkpoints that must be passed. There is no way anything slows down. US AI will use a guaranteed strategy to handle tWashington DC to raise the fears of the Chinese. The more the political scene deteiorates, the better this strategy will work against the resistance..

It’s concerning there are no details about the pessimistic camp presented other than AI can destroy humanity. What do they mean?
@rexmundi8154
@rexmundi8154 10 месяцев назад
That’s a great question. Ilya has said that he can envision a future where the entire surface of the earth is covered in solar panels and data centers because AI has taken over. Maybe that’s a little extreme. But AI in the wrong hands could be used to crack the encryption on banking systems and wipe everyone’s account to zero. Or give everyone a million dollars. It could crash the stock market or turn off the power to NYC. A human made computer virus destroyed parts of the Iranian nuclear program by causing critical systems to run wild. So maybe it destroys every smart appliance. Or it creates deep fake porn videos of world leaders. Maybe it shuts down a million cars in the middle of a blizzard. The possibility of massive destruction is unlimited. These are just ideas a normal human came up with off the cuff in a YT comment. AI would at some point be smarter than the smartest human. So what it would come up with is probably worse

If you have AGI that has real time access to the net, persistent memory, and the ability to add to its own model, it will achieve SGI within two weeks. If it has access to funding it could hire human agents (of which there are millions doing freelance work on the net), and literally take over the global financial system in two more weeks. Maybe three if I'm being pessimistic. And once you own the money you own nearly all the politicians.

# I believe we are meant to be like Jesus in our hearts and not in our flesh. But be careful of AI, for it is just our flesh and that is it. It knows only things of the flesh (our fleshly desires) and cannot comprehend things of the spirit such as peace of heart (which comes from obeying God's Word). Whereas we are a spirit and we have a soul but live in the body (in the flesh). When you go to bed it is your flesh that sleeps but your spirit never sleeps (otherwise you have died physically) that is why you have dreams. More so, true love that endures and last is a thing of the heart (when I say 'heart', I mean 'spirit'). But fake love, pretentious love, love with expectations, love for classic reasons, love for material reasons and love for selfish reasons that is a thing of our flesh. In the beginning God said let us make man in our own image, according to our likeness. Take note, God is Spirit and God is Love. As Love He is the source of it. We also know that God is Omnipotent, for He creates out of nothing and He has no beginning and has no end. That means, our love is but a shadow of God's Love. True love looks around to see who is in need of your help, your smile, your possessions, your money, your strength, your quality time. Love forgives and forgets. Love wants for others what it wants for itself. Take note, true love works in conjunction with other spiritual forces such as patience and faith (in the finished work of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, rather than in what man has done such as science, technology and organizations which won't last forever). To avoid sin and error which leads to the death of our body and also our spirit in hell fire, we should let the Word of God be the standard of our lives not AI. If not, God will let us face AI on our own and it will cast the truth down to the ground, it will be the cause of so much destruction like never seen before, it will deceive many and take many captive in order to enslave them into worshipping it and abiding in lawlessness. We can only destroy ourselves but with God all things are possible. God knows us better because He is our Creater and He knows our beginning and our end. Our prove text is taken from the book of John 5:31-44, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Daniel 7-9, Revelation 13-15, Matthew 24-25 and Luke 21. Let us watch and pray... God bless you as you share this message to others.

@@stevereal- # Good Morning, God bless you for your reply. Christianity is not a religion but a Love relationship. It's all about I love God and I love others. Matthew 5:13 says, "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men." A soul can only be purified while in the body (while on Earth) but after death anything unpurified (unclean) cannot enter Heaven Gates. No one in his right mind can risk or even bare to put anything rotten into his live body nor put the rotten thing closer to the those which are not rotten. Sin makes the soul unclean but we can ask God to forgive us (to cleanse us) by the blood of His Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ which He shed here on Earth. Meditation in the Word of God is a visit to God because God is in His Word. We know God through His Word because the Word He speaks represent His heart's desires. Meditation is a thing of the heart not a thinking process. Let the Word prevail over thinking process. Begin to meditate on this prayer day and night (in all that you do), "Lord take more of me and give me more of you. Give me more of your holiness, faithfulness, obedience, self-control, purity, humility, love, goodness, kindness, forgiveness, wisdom, understanding, calmness, perseverance... Make me a channel of shinning light where there darkness, a channel of pardon where there is injury, a channel of love where there is hatred, a channel of humility where there is pride..." The Word of God becomes a part of us by meditation, not by saying words but spirit prayer (prayer from the heart). When the Word becomes a part of you, it will by its very nature influence your conduct and behavior. Glory and honour be to God our Father, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and our Helper the Holy Spirit. Thank you again for your time.

Cambridge Student: "To get to AGI, can we just keep min maxing language models, or is there another breakthrough that we haven't really found yet to get to AGI?" Sam Altman: "We need another breakthrough. We can still push on large language models quite a lot, and we will do that. We can take the hill that we're on and keep climbing it, and the peak of that is still pretty far away. But, within reason, I don't think that doing that will (get us to) AGI. If (for example) super intelligence can't discover novel physics I don't think it's a superintelligence. And teaching it to clone the behavior of humans and human text - I don't think that's going to get there.And so there's this question which has been debated in the field for a long time: what do we have to do in addition to a language model to make a system that can go discover new physics?"
