In today's What The Phu! Wednesday, Phu goes over the Fly Bikes Magneto BMX Cassette hub. This hub is the only BMX bike hub that uses a Magnetic driver and paw mechanism vs the traditional, for example Profile Racing hub which features the metal spring and paw system

Engineering Student Comments for Phu and Alfredo: 1) Rare earth magnets, like the kind in this driver, do not lose their magnetic pull to any noticeable degree until about 176 F. Given that this driver would probably never get near that temperature, it is safe to say that this property of magnets should not be an issue. 2) Iron particles from the dirt do build up on magnets and are a hassle to clean. However, given that this hub is pretty well sealed and the iron in the dirt in most places we ride is only trace (tiny amount), we should not observe any issues regarding this. If you somehow did manage this, just clean it off since it's so easy to disassemble. 3) One large advantage of this hub that was not mentioned is that the durability of this system. When engaged, the huge contact patch on the pawl disc is never going to slip. Pawl spring systems do slip occasionally as most of us have experienced. The racing side of BMX definitely appreciates a hub that transfers all force to the ground and never slips, this is a possible application in the future. 4) Given the odds of a magnetic thunderstorm, it is more likely that phu lands a triple whip. Thanks XD

Definitely sounds good! It's a pretty cool concept, my bet would be that it wouldn't wear out any quicker than a traditional pawls and springs, both have a little bit of friction no matter what, and everything from fly seems to be very high quality... I dig it🤘🔥🔥

If it were for road bikes the slight increase in friction would matter. But I think the simplicity that increases reliability far outways that effect for bmx.

This hub has been in the works for a long time! I’ve had mine for about a year and have no issues with it other than the cone nuts have knurling on it and it slips on the frame sometimes! Other than that it’s a great hub, instant engaging, very smooth and so loud!

I have an eclat seismic hub, which uses the same clutch style ratcheting driver. But instead of using a magnet, it uses springs more like a traditional cassette. The sound from these drivers is insane, it's super deep and loud. Makes profile minis sound whiney. edit: Yes the clutch has a bit more drag than a traditional cassette but it's nominal. If you keep your hubs lubed you shouldn't have issues with ware. In fact the clutch system is less likely to fail than the traditional spring and pawl cassette since there are more contact points
@bmxriderforlife1234
@bmxriderforlife1234 2 года назад
Actually they're supposed to reduce drag in the hub compared to comparable high engagement designs. Remember a profile mini is only like 48 points of engagement. It's up from the stock joytech style design that odyssey uses. Pretty sure the ratchet ring design will be more free spinning then individually sprung pawls with equal engagement.
@oldguyrips535

I really like the concept, thanks for this one. As for dirt collection, including the metal found in the dirt, given the ease of the disassembly on this, it should be fairly easy to open and clean after a heavy dirt session. Probably easier than a cassette or coaster breakdown and rebuild, which could (in theory) actually lead to longer lasting parts 🤔🤔🤔

The more teeth the more engagement more acceleration and speed but the friction can be reduced by using a wpc coating be it's a process where ceramic beads are shot at the metal making this unique finish that reduces friction by a huge margin and prolongs the life of metal parts and reduces friction and makes the metal way stronger

the hub is very well sealed from any small particles magnetic or not. also creates less friction . you have a better chance of lighting you before the hub since your just a sack of water. Yes magnets loose their power when hot but, the amount of heat required will never be accomplished on this bicycle. The hub is a better mouse trap that i would buy.

thats really interesting to see thats for sure. the magnetic hubs engagement is far superior the the 4 pawl design by far. that magnetic hub will never slip. the other hub having 4 pawls and each pawl engaging 1 tooth is actually kinda crappy tbh. its pretty much the same design as a ratchet you use to work on the bikes. the more teeth you have the better thats for sure. as far as dust etc. i wouldnt worry much on the magnetic hub as its most likey sealed up very well. i guarantee the magnetic hub will last longer as well. the regular hub id lube that w superlube. same thing i use on my ratchets.

So its a neat engineering solution ie; cool, its different in that it uses magnets instead of springs to engage drive.... but its expensive and it has to offer something over paws and springs to have its USP but I'm just not seeing it... what are these advantages? What was the problem with paws and springs to have a need for this? Looks like a solution looking for a problem to me, I've never had conventional ratchet drive fail on me in over 15 years of riding. If it aint broke don't try to fix it... or have I missed something?

@spudvader
@spudvader 2 года назад
The pawl system is still better over cost and performance when system is not engaged i.e. coasting. There is a larger surface area of the ratchet system in constant contact, the same negative that was earlier in the video with 6 pawl system, so creating drag (making you slower) and friction which causes wear. The upside is the magnetic system doesn't seem hard to pull apart and replace. As for cost, constant friction means more wear and it's a proprietary tech at this point so more cost again. Cool tech but just another one for the trash
