The "excited" exhale at the beginning of every one of Tom's videos is becoming one of my favorite things.

I used to work in that building on the corner of Broadway and 39th St. Great neighborhood. There was still a lot of Fashion design happening there, but the designs would be sent to China for manufacturing. I also had a studio on 8th Ave and 37th St, so that neighborhood is a place I'm super fond of and have great memories of too!

Thanks for this! I should say that if you're into costuming, theatre or work with textiles, these few streets are a shopping paradise! I was just up on 38th Street yesterday and spent $100 on feathers and trim. That said, I appreciate your reference to the early downtown days. My mother-in-law grew up on the Lower East Side and her father was a successful tailor.

The Garment District is very important in Manhattan. One time they want to get rid of it, thanks to the Manhattan Borough President at the time Gale Brewer it's still there. She said firmly this district isn't going anywhere. Long live the Garment District! ❤👗👔

My aunt used to work in that area. Her job was de-construct european designer dresses and create a pret-a-porter version. Her daughter went to fashion school and became a textile designer. None of that exists anymore. Most have been moved abroad. India, Taiwan, Pakistan, China due to cost savings.

18:24 great line "Anywhere he didn't write that damn thing." :) Tenderloin District comprised both brothels and theatres as actors were considered the same as hookers then. Well known, Broadway was an old Indian trail on a ridgeline (Wichquasgeck Trail) that runs north 150 miles to Albany while Manhattan's grid is 29 degrees Northeast giving us Manhattanhenge. Imagine, Lin Manuel-Miranada three hundred years ago while on a primage on the Wichquasgeck Trail writing 'Hamilton' 🙊 Good video, thanks.
@vincentgoupil180
@vincentgoupil180 Год назад
Yes, Alexander Hamilton is a construct of Lin Manuel-Miranada. Matter of fact Tom has Manuel-Miranada residing in his microbiome bowels writing scripts for him to say. Notice how Tomd breaks into a song as if he's in a musical of an off, off, off, off, Broadway RU-vid production. I know, scary Evict Manuel-Miranada from Tom's butt support the upcoming "Enemas for Tom" drive 👍 T.B.A.

Thank you for sharing the history of the fashion industry in New YorkCity. The union workers, specifically women, were key to the developing labour movement. I like to see those old union made labels in vintage clothing. I learned about the fire at the factory when I first visited NYC in the early 2000’s. It makes me sad to think about how clothing is not made in the U.S. like it used to be in the past. The stories are so important about that time especially now with “fast fashion” in the world. I appreciate you!

The Garment District does seem like such a great place to wander around in!!! You are so lucky!!! Do you sew? Also, do you think the original Indian names of New York's areas are beautiful? Someone in your comments section below mentioned Wachquasgeck Trail; I would be grateful if you would mention more Indian names as you acquaint us with New York. Thank you. Take care!

Love your content but this was a bit of history overload for me. I miss when you actually toured the district. We watched you stand in one spot and retort info.(walk and talk) A couple of landmark shots and the usual of Tom mock lounging on the street bench.(always found that a bit of a classist insult joke) but all love to you bro. Lol

Broadway and 8th, Columbus Square ... uh, wait a minute ... But seriously, I read somewhere that the Mayor of NYC in 1860 suggested that the city secede along with the South because so much of NYC's economy was based on cotton.
